* These 7 contests were in the 'One Big Final' format, without semi-finals and therefore guaranteeing a 'qualification' for all entrants. With the exception of XXXII, these contests also had a different points system where more songs could be voted for and the top song received 18 points instead of 12. This means point tallies for these six contests are slightly inflated from their usual level, but the tallies are presented as they were announced at the time to preserve historical accuracy.

Kidnap Kid for XLV!

President Salim Zosimus is proud to announce that Kidnap Kid will be representing Persephonia in Kinë, Elëdan for BuzzJack Song Contest XLV with his song Vehl! Listen below:

The song is a little bit unusual but we have hopes that it could do alright for us. Elëdanese predictors are not so hopeful though, with an opening prediction of a DNQ knocking the confidence of Persephonian BJSC enthusiasts.

Feel free to air any thoughts and predictions.

UPDATE: Elëdanese bookmakers have also given odds of 65/1 for Persephonia to WIN the contest. Not our best odds ever but not our worst either. We have 39th best odds out of 51 songs at least.

Your entry this month is not entirely awful! :cheer:

Persephonia submits its semi-final votes!

It's an early vote for Persephonia month with our semi-final votes submitted the night of the contest's opening. Obviously as per the rules of the contest we cannot yet reveal our votes but in good time they shall be revealed! As usual we're hoping that none of our top picks (or of course ourselves) will fail to qualify but with only fifteen out of twenty-five songs able to go through we're probably bound to lose something.

New odds and predictions today

FSR Rontvia has made its predictions and unfortunately it's another poor result for Persephonia, who get a 2nd DNQ prediction out of two - although notably still mentioned as having a chance. FSR Rontvia's bookmakers, RontBet, are more optimistic about Persephonia's chances of winning than Elëdan's were, offering 50/1 odds to win at this stage of the competition, 42nd out of 51 entries.

UPDATE: Séyetana has now cast its qualifier predictions and it's positive news as Persephonia are predicted to go through! Unovian bookmakers BetVia have also given odds to win and Persephonia have been placed at 60/1, 45th out of 51 nations.

UPDATE 2: Unovia have now cast their predictions and it's yet another blow to Persephonia who are once again not predicted to qualify (as predicted by two of the other three predictors). As with Rontvia's earlier set of predictions though, it's not all bad as Persephonia were named as still having a chance. It's a very hotly contested semi-final and really anything could happen!

Oh Bré :(

You need to sell your soul to the devil instead of entering songs that'll mainly appeal to Pavel (ie; appeal to nobody else). :( I can imagine Pavel giving you his 12 points for sheer quirkiness (or is it weirdness, I forget). :P

There's bound to be some people in SF1 who will like Kidnap Kip but like Germany's strongest alcoholic drink, it's an acquired taste.

I've entered songs with far narrower appeal than 'Vehl' :P I actually had another song in mind which would probably have done better but I don't like it as much - I may send it next contest if nothing else comes up.

And whatever do you mean by 'sell your soul to the devil'? :drama:

Zosimus on f(x) scandal: "the right decision was made"

It's been a chaotic and scandalous contest so far in Elëdan, the veto system getting another round of abuse with heavy controversy over potential BJSC entry 'Water Against The Rocks' by Faye and equal if not greater controversy over the decision to not veto Ramrynian entry 'I Love It' by Icona Pop. The latest scandal to hit the press regards Persephonian neighbour country Daehun.

Daehun's entry, 'Hot Summer' by f(x), was found by some more observant contest entrants to be a cover of the ill-fated entry of the same name by Monrose, which finished 17th in semi-final 2 of BJSC IX for defunct nation Tasha Island. There is of course a rule of the BuzzJack Song Contest which prohibits entries being cover versions of previous entries, but ultimately the BJSC mods chose to allow Daehun to continue due to significant differences (being in a different language for example) and the obscurity of the Tasha Island entry.

Persephonian President Salim Zosimus has given his awaited input to the scandal, agreeing with the mods' decision. He said, "It would have been utterly ridiculous to make Daehun change their entry this late into the competition when not only did no one even remember the Monrose entry, but the f(x) version of the song is very different anyway. The right decision was made and we are glad to see it."

Listen to the two songs below - do you think f(x) should have been disqualified from the contest?

New odds and predictions today

Numayania are the fifth country to predict the qualifiers of semi-final one and the second of those to predict Persephonia to qualify! It was a borderline prediction - with Caerfyrddia, Espen and PRoJ cited as potentially taking the place - but a prediction nonetheless. Séyetanian bookmakers SéyetBet have also given odds of 33/1 for Persephonia to win the contest. This is our best odds yet, but this was perhaps to be expected given Persephonia's land border and strong trade relations with Séyetana.

UPDATE: Sandebörg have predicted Persephonia to DNQ. Persephonia's qualification prediction rate is now 2/6.

UPDATE 2: A seventh set of semi-fnal 1 predictions have come through and it's no better than most as Caerfyrddia join the nations predicting Persephonia to DNQ, bringing Persephonia's qualification prediction rate to 2/7. Caerfyrddia is notably one of Persephonia's three border countries but it has fewer close links with Persephonia than Séyetana and Daehun - after all, they're in a much bigger league being a moderator country.

UPDATE 3: Caerfyrddia have elaborated on their prediction by specifically placing Persephonia 18th most likely to qualify (outside the top 15 necessary to make it in) with odds of qualifying on 2.05, or 41/20 if I'm understanding odds correctly. Caerfyrddian bookmakers BwciFyrddin have also given odds to win and place Persephonia 43rd out of 51 entries with 75/1 odds to win.

Nice update there Bray! Good to see Ramrynia get a mention, even if it is for the wrong reasons! :kink:

Oricon will be happy he is getting such a lot of publicity in Persephonia! I think it was the right decision not to force Daehun to change their entry too, as it wasn't that similar at all and would have been unrecognisable to a lot of people.

The BuzzJack Song Contest spring - how many more regimes will fall?

Persephonian onlookers have noted a recent uptick in political instability around the BJSC world - the Civil War which saw the old Persephonian government replaced with the current form seems to have inspired other nations to carry out similar regime changes.

First, mere days before the start of BJSC XLV, the nation formerly known as Tréstamford-Gallagher experienced a 'bloodless coup' resulting in the removal of the former authoritarian regime and installing democracy. The change also saw the country's name change to Launiça and they have accordingly returned to BJSC for the first time since XXVII.

Later, the monarchy of the nation formerly known as FYR Vojvodina-on-the-Wold was dissolved and replaced with a new government who renamed the country Altyr Muunilinst (the change set to be reflected in BJSC XLVI). A less extreme change then occurred in the country previously known as Kluminican Republic where a 'change in government' has resulted in the country changing its name to the shortened form of Kluminica - there are rumours, however, that no change has occurred at all and Emperor Parrrtrick le I is still very much in power and is just too lazy to use the old name.

Will the BJSC spring continue to other nations or is the BJSC world once again politically stable? Only time will tell...

New odds and predictions today

Just the one new set of predictions, but it's another positive one - Persephonia's qualification prediction rate now rises to 3/8 as Terra Avium have predicted Persephonia to qualify! There are also positive sentiments from debuting nation N DNTN who didn't submit official predictions but implied that Persephonia are likely to qualify.

UPDATE: N DNTN's sentiments have been solidified as Persephonia officially receives its fourth qualification prediction out of nine. Can we get more more to make it an even half?

DaeNews report "attention-seeking lies"; Zosimus questions motives

Some readers may have heard about a recent report by DaeNews, the news source of neighbouring country Daehun, which claims Emperor Gikwang has halted trade ties with Persephonia, increased military patrol of the Daehun-Persephonia border and ordered all citizens with Persephonian passports to leave the country. The news report cites the reason for this as Persephonian President Salim Zosimus moving to 'abolish K-Pop' within Persephonia.

You have reason to be perplezed by this news, especially if you live on the border with Daehun - there clearly is no increased military patrol on the border. Equal confusion is also justified for Lauisianan readers, as the state of Lauisiana has very heavily Koren-influenced culture and K-Pop is a highly popular musical genre, with no word of a movement for its abolition. Also regarding the trade ties, Persephonian businesses have reported no decrease in business with Daehunese clients. Reports of a ban on Persephonian aircraft flying over Daehun are also clearly untrue - Salim Zosimus boarded a flight to Daehun capital Yamatopori this morning with no consequence.

So how did this clearly inaccurate story make its way into a top Daehunese newspaper? No one is sure. Some cynics have labelled it "attention-seeking lies", as if Daehun is attempting to divert attention from the scandal regarding their BJSC XLV entry 'Hot Summer' by f(x). Salim Zosimus has publically questioned DaeNews' motives in printing the report. There is speculation that the story was added just before the paper went to press by an anti-Persephonia hacker. Whatever the reason for the publication, Persephonian readers have nothing to fear - there are no tensions between Persephonia and Daehun and K-Pop is most certainly NOT to be abolished within Persephonia.

Zosimus announces plans to colonise mysterious island

President Zosimus has also been in the news today with his announcement that the Persephonian army are to be deployed to the mysterious island of Üürniköök to establish it as Persephonian territory, for possible redistribution to the nation of Umiiruka.

Üürniköök lies some 2,000 miles southwest of Persephonia's most westernly point, the Robȃt Valley in Davada State. The island has been left to its own devices since a previous civilisation, established on the 17th of July 2009, crumbled within an hour of its establishment. The initial settler, a man known only as Anselm, got as far as creating a flag for the nation and establishing the capital city as Üür before the Üürniköökian natives are believed to have murdered him and destroyed the city. The Üürniköökian natives were known for their hostility and as such no other nations have attempted to colonise the island since.

http://i30.tinypic.com/2ptux42.png

the ill-fated flag of the nation of Üürniköök

Very little is known about the island. It is assumed that the Üürniköökian natives have simply returned to their traditional lives since their removal of Anselm's government. They have never attempted contact with the rest of the BJSC world and no known living inhabitants of the BJSC world has ever laid eyes upon an Üürniköökian native. There is one existing photograph of one of the natives from Anselm's first visit to the island but it is very blurry and only gives a vague idea of the appearance of the natives. Besides this all that is known of the natives is that they are very hostile and ready to kill any intruders - if indeed they still exist.

There is speculation that Üürniköök lies on a faultline and any potential earthquakes could have destroyed the Üürniköökian infrastructure leading to their mass extinction. The natives' lack of access to medical technology also opens the possibility of a simple virus killing off the natives shortly after Anselm's settlement. Whatever state the island is in, the Persephonian army are preparing to head over there and establish the island as a new colony of Persephonia. There are plans to then redistribute the island as land for the country of Umiiruka, which currently exists as a 'floater nation' with no physical land claimed.

The nation of Üürniköök's very brief existence meant it never sent any songs to BJSC.

New odds and predictions

A tenth nation - Batidas - has issued BJSC semi-final 1 qualification predictions but sadly it doesn't bring us to a 50% qualification prediction rate as they predict us to DNQ, the sixth nation out of the ten to do so. BETidas, the bookmakers of Batidas, have also given Persephonia odds of 56/1 to win the contest, ranked just 48th out of the 51 countries, while odds given by Daehun's bookmakers are much more positive, with odds of 35/1 offered, ranking Persephonia 23rd most likely to win out of the 51 entrants.

Üürniköök successfully colonised

Persephonia's colonisation of the island of Üürniköök (announced in the Persephonian News Bulletin two days ago) has been successfully completed.

The local population was found to be very low, with only around 100 Üürniköökian natives believed to be on the island. What little remained of them remained highly hostile though - the Persephonian army were spotted by the natives' primitive telescopes when they were around ten miles off the shore, which gave the natives time to prepare arms. Most of the natives were armed only with simple wooden weapons but one Persephonian soldier was reportedly struck by a projectile brick, presumably from the remains of the destroyed city of Üür.

The leader of the natives, Noah Sentïn, was much less hostile to the intruders. He surprisingly seemed to be able to speak fluent Persephonian. He was glad to hand over control of the island to Persephonia, pointing out severe economical problems on the remote island which had been cut off from the rest of the BJSC world for some three years. He issued a message to the remaining natives instructing them to not attack the Persephonian army.

Reported plans to now hand control of the island to Umiiruka are yet to be confirmed but the announcement is heavily anticipated.

DaeNews confusion continues

There remains confusion about items published in Daehunese newspaper DaeNews describing supposed political tensions between Persephonia and Daehun. President Salim Zosimus is yet to comment further on the issue but government officials reassure Persephonians that a solution is being worked on. DaeNews' CEO is yet to comment on the issue.

New odds and predictions

An eleventh country, Bignia-Zaragovina, have cast predictions for the qualifiers of semi-final 1 and it they are the fifth country to predict Persephonia to qualify! (We should note that Bignia-Zaragovina are a close political ally of Persephonia but this is unlikely to have made an impact on their decision). Meanwhile there's also positive news on the odds as Numayania's bookmakers PadisPouwer.ny offer odds of 28/1 for Persephonia to win, our shortest odds of the contest so far.

The Persephonian News Bulletin shall be reporting coverage of the entire semi-finals in tomorrow's edition. All fingers and toes are crossed for Kidnap Kid to be among the lucky fifteen qualifiers from semi-final one!

PERSEPHONIA QUALIFY FOR THE BJSC XLV FINAL!

Jubilation is rife across the ten states of Persephonia as the grand announcement was made today that Persephonia's entry, 'Vehl' by Kidnap Kid, has officially qualified for the 45th BuzzJack Song Contest final in Kinë, Elëdan!

A final prediction from Greenfroze that Persephonia would qualify pushed our qualification rate to an even 50%, six out of twelve to be precise. At the end of the day we were the sixteenth most predicted-to-qualify nation out of 25 in semi-final 1, so the qualification could just about be considered an upset. Aggregate odds calculated by Ramrynia placed Persephonia at 50/1 odds to win heading into the semi-final results, ranking 21st out of 25th in semi-final one and 40th out of 51 including semi-final two and Elëdan's autoqualifier. Further odds will now be cast now the semi-final results are done and dusted - these shall be reported once again right here in the Persephonian News Bulletin over the following week!

It's Persephonia's fifteenth appearance in the final out of 25 entries, though seven of these final appearances were guaranteed due to the now-defunct One Big Final format. As Karin Park qualified for the final last contest, this marks only the third time that Persephonia have passed through the semi-finals twice in a row, the previous two occasions coming in a three-in-a-row from XXIII to XXV (just before One Big Final's brief introduction).

BJSC XLV - the qualifiers

Host nation Elëdan's qualification with entry 'Badman' by Ruby Goe comes as no shock to anyone, as it was an autoqualifier from the start. Were the other qualifications a shock?

Well, certainly a few weren't in semi-final one. FSR Rontvia (represented by Haloo Helsinki!'s 'Maailman Toisella Puolen'), Greenfroze (Mary N'Diaye's 'Big Dreamer'), Mdiče (Grimes' 'Oblivion') and Ramrynia (Icona Pop's 'I Love It') were all predicted to qualify by all 12 who cast predictions for the semi-final, while Batidas (Ivan Gough & Feenixpawl's 'In My Mind' feat. Georgi Kay [Axwell Remix]) were predicted through by 11/12 and Séyetana (Ruby Frost's 'Water To Ice') by 10/12.

Also within the top 15 most predicted to qualify nations, Caerfyrddia (Rebekka Karijord's 'Use My Body While It's Still Young'), Kingdom of Shadow (Rye Rye's 'DNA' feat. Porcelain Black), Ingermanlandia (Woodkid's 'Run Boy Run') and PRoJ (Sigur Rós' 'Ekki Múkk') all also qualified.

The potential for shock came among the other five qualifiers - Persephonia's own entry being one of those plus Espen (Micaela's 'Splendida Stupida'), N DNTN's debut entry (Cultfever's 'knewyouwell') and Sangria (WTF!'s 'Da Bop') which were all predicted to qualify by only 5 out of 12 predictors, then perhaps the biggest shock of the semi-final, Sandebörg (represented by Michael S.' 'Rewind') got through despite receiving only four positive predictions.

Commiserations to Isconia (perhaps the biggest shock DNQ of the semi-final after receiving ten positive predictions), Ashton, Farahtyn, Botanikka, Utopia, Terra Avium, Bignia-Zaragovina, Usfland, Zechonia and Launiça (on their long-delayed second appearance in BJSC) who failed to get through semi-final 1.

Over in semi-final 2, there are fully expected qualifications from FYR Vojvodina-on-the-Wold, Kopečka and Umiiruka, as well as highly predicted qualifications from Kluminican Republic, Numayania, Tinnmark, Fljótavík, Hendinia, #00274E, Allecian and Danaelanda (the latter qualifying for the first time in a full year). Slightly less predictable qualifications came from Kylienips, Aeroche, Aquafina and Daehun. The latter two were each predicted to qualify by only four of the fifteen predictors for semi-final 2. Aquafina are also returning to the final after a year-long absence.

Finally, commiserations to the second semi-final's non-qualifiers - the biggest shock being Syndare who go out despite 100% qualification predictions. Unovia's failure to qualify was also predicted by just one predictor. Bellamia, Skall, Land of Jack, Budtar, FNT Nickodonia, Keypopian Republic, Lake Thermwoods and N-Lazone also all failed to qualify.

Persephonia get one of their best finishes ever, in 14th with 94 points!

Persephonia have finished in fourteenth place with 94 points in the 45th BuzzJack Song Contest in Kinë, Elëdan! It marks our country's third highest finish ever (after Sparks' Revolving went all the way to 6th back in XXX and Beth Ditto's I Wrote The Book came 13th the following contest) and our fourth largest scoring entry ever, trailing 'Revolving' (156), Jónsi's 'Animal Arithmetic' (15th in XXVI with 142) and 'I Wrote The Book' (119). It's the best showing of 2012 so far for Persephonia, beating both the position (17th) and points (80) of XLII entry 'Reckless (With Your Love)' by Azari & III.

The winner of the contest by a semi landslide was the debut win for Ingermanlandia, whose entry 'Run Boy Run' by Woodkid topped it with 200 points (including 8 from Persephonia) - needless to say we are incredibly pleased at their success and look forward to sending our next entry - which has already been decided - to Terijoki, Ingermanlandia for XLVI.

A full report on the BJSC XLV final will hit the Persephonian News Bulletin tomorrow - this edition has been rushed out to deliver the main news ASAP.

BJSC XLV final: full report

As promised, here is the full report on the results of BJSC XLV.

Another huge congratulations to Ingermanlandia for winning the contest. Their tally of 200 points constituted a 23.5% lead over the second placed country. While Ingermanlandia's track had received some good odds, the big favourites for the win were Greenfroze, Ramrynia and FYR Vojvodina-on-the-Wold, who finish in 2nd, 3rd and 5th respectively. Filling in the other gap in the top 5, #00274E finish fourth on just their second appearance.

Fljótavík lost a tie-break for #5 and end up in sixth. Batidas' entry, much loved by the Persephonian voters who awarded it 10 points, made #7. Perennially popular nation FSR Rontvia bagged yet another top 10 finishing eighth, Umiiruka made it to 9th giving them their first top 10 after they narrowly missed out last time and Sangria completed the top 10 at #10.

Numayania just missed out on the top 10 by one point and Aeroche were just one more point behind, while the final song to score at least 100 points with bang on 100 was Séyetana's entry (another popular one with Persephonian voters) which finished 13th. As already reported, Persephonia landed in fourteenth, one of our best performances to date - although it was a bit of a downfall from when we were ranked in the top five halfway through the big vote reveal. Another Persephonian favourite, Caerfyrddia, rounded off the top 15.

Mdiče underperformed a bit, finishing 16th after being one of the big favourites for the win. Host nation Elëdan were just behind in 17th. Danaelanda, Kluminican Republic and Kylienips also finished top 20 in that order. Daehun's controversial entry same 21st, while Persephonian voters' favourite song of the final from PRoJ was just behind in 22nd - a fairly disappointing showing, but the semi-final votes revealed that the song would not have even qualified if not for Persephonia's votes! Hendinia (a close political ally of Persephonia) along with Persephonian voters' least favourite track of the final from Allecian both avoided the dreaded bottom seven, tying for 23rd with Hendinia thankfully winning the tie-break.

The bottom seven songs came from, in order: Tinnmark (a disappointing underperformance from Persephonian voters' favourite song from the second semi-final), Kopečka, Espen, N DNTN (on their first ever appearance in the competition), Kingdom of Shadow, then the final two finishing well clear of the rest, with Sandebörg finishing 30th and Aquafina's first qualification in a year and only their second ever proving to be a disappointing result with them taking the wooden spoon, crashing out in 31st with just 25 points.

Zosimus inaugurates the union of Jubirdia

President Salim Zosimus has officially announced the formation of a great union of BJSC nations known as Jubirdia.

The union consists of Persephonia themselves, neighbour nations Séyetana and Daehun and other political allies Bignia-Zaragovina, Umiiruka, Hendinia, Ramrynia, Aquafina, FNT Nickodonia and Bellamia.

The move is to solidify Persephonia's commitment to peace under their new leader, after the nation was previously notoriously known as violent and politically unstable, responsible for the obliteration of all life in the nation of Liechenstaan and reducing its territory to an uninhabitable nuclear wasteland.

Zosimus has insisted that the Jubirdia union will not in any way affect Persephonia's voting in the BuzzJack Song Contest, but is merely a symbolic representation of the alliance between these ten nations and their commitment to BJSC world peace efforts.

Persephonia joins the top 40 most successful nations ever

After Persephonia's fourth best points result ever in BJSC XLV, we're proud to announce that we have moved up to 39th in the overall rankings of BJSC nations by points scored in the final.

We have also passed the 1,000 points mark overall, with the 94 points scored by Kidnap Kid's 'Vehl' taking us to a total of 1,086.

This is also enough for Persephonia to make an appearance in the top 20 countries to have never won the contest - in 20th place.

There's still a long way to go before Persephonia can even dream of ever joining the elite of BJSC but these are positive first steps for us.

Persephonia confirm entry for BJSC XLVI

Persephonia have officially confirmed their entry for BJSC XLVI in Terijoki, Ingermanlandia! As per contest rules we can't reveal our entry just yet but we can say it's by an American brother/sister duo and is not electronica like our last couple of entries. President Salim Zosimus has said he "looks forward to seeing people's reaction to the entry" and is confident that it could be "another mildly big one for us" after last contest's 14th place finish.

Persephonia train station opens for business in Ingermanlandia

A train station named after Persephonia has been unveiled in Ingermanlandia, among an entire network of stations named after participating countries.

Persephonia's station is located on a three-way junction of lines 2, 4 and 5. We share the junction with Utopia and Aquafina, while we are also directly linked to Kluminica (northwest on line 5), Kopečka, PRoJ (both north on lines 2/3), Allecian, Land of Jack (both east on lines 1/4), Syndare, Fljótavík (both southeast on lines 1/5), Greenfroze and Isconia (both south on lines 1/2). It is currently unknown whether this train network is of any further significance.

See the full map of the network here.
