In a tight battle that could have gone a number of different ways between the Top 3 it was Canada's Arcade Fire who reign supreme with "Afterlife", which climbs 5-1 to give them their first number 1 since summer 2005's "Rebellion (Lies)". "Afterlife" ranks as their first ever Christmas Number One. Arcade Fire also achieve the unique feat of holding the top and bottom rung of the chart as "Reflektor" ebbs 43-50 this week after 16 weeks on the chart. There is a relatively quiet and shuffled Top 5, however just outside it there are a number of climbs - the strongest of which goes to !!! (Chk Chk Chk) whose festive offering "And Anyway It's Christmas" makes an impressive 11 place climb to #8 - however that is highly likely to be as high as it goes due to Christmas Day rapidly approaching; Orbital's "Christmas Chime" (a festive re-working of critically acclaimed 1989 dance anthem "Chime") similarly rises 21-12 and will most likely progress no further. Offerings from Gesaffelstein (admittedly a lot less seasonal!), and Washed Out post only modest improvements of 5 spots and 1 spot to #7 ("Hate or Glory") and #6 ("All I Know") respectively, this week - but should continue to improve as we head towards the new year. Claiming his 3rd Top 20 hit, Sampha Sisay jumps 7 places to #18 with the stripped back "Too Much". The track was sampled on Drake's recent album Nothing Was the Same; previous hits include a collaboration with SBTRKT "Hold On" which made #7 in early 2012 and "Valentine", a collaboration with Jessie Ware which peaked at #11 in 2011. Just 3 new songs make the chart in the traditional quiet lead-up period to Christmas, the highest is some Swedish synth-pop courtesy of Ceo, aka Eric Berglund. "Whorehouse" is the lead single from forthcoming new album Wonderland and it debuts at No.41. There is also a return for Burial at 47 with the bass charged "Rival Dealer". The final new entry comes from an artist who has already been at #1 in 2013; Pharrell Williams made a phenomenal comeback when he provided the vocals for Daft Punk's 3 week chart topper "Get Lucky" in May, and now returns in his own right with "Happy" - which soundtracks Despicable Me 2. Thanks for reading, and Merry Christmas! December 22, 201311 yr Hello Dr! I really don't comment on your chart very often (that's a problem I have with everyone lately though so oops), it really is the home of SUPERB TASTE. Particularly that #1 - have you seen the Greta Gerwig video? Still perpetually in my head when I listen to the song. Much affection for what I know of your top ten, especially BBC - still growing on me. Good to see Katy B, Iyes, Disclosure climbing, and Burial entering - even if I'm much more taken with another of the tracks! Merry Christmas! :D
