The Twilight Sad - IT'S THE LONG GOODBYE
I'm also loving this, the guitars throughout are heavenly! The intensity really matching the deeply personal lyrics and heartbreaking subject matter. I really liked “INHOSPITABLE/HOSPITAL” too, though mainly because it sounds like The Cure; that opening guitar riff. *.*

The Prodigy “Firestarter”
30 years ago today, 18 March 1996 - The Prodigy released “Firestarter”, the first single to be taken from 1997s The Fat of the Land, and what would become not only the beginning of the groups commerical peak, but serve as an iconic influental 90s anthem that spent 3 weeks at No1 in the UK. The track started out in 1995 as a simple guitar loop and was initially an instrumental with that guitar loop serving as its distinctive distorted main riff, with Liam now heavily influenced by the guitar heavy anthems of the early-mid 1990s from American bands like Rage Against The Machine, The Breeders, Foo Fighters and Nirvana. Indeed Kim Deal (who was not asked at the time, and was not pleased about this..) gets a writing credit on the single as the guitars on Breeders' track “S.O.S.” were heavily sampled to add tension to the song. In addition to this the 'Hey, hey, hey' sample is taken from Art of Noise's “Close (To The Edit)” - a sample for which Liam apparently had to pay heavily for, despite it being easily available as a studio sample since the late 1980s. Liam was apparently happy to use a good sampled vocal on the track but Keith Flint had other ideas. Keith, who up to this point was primarily an onstage dancer and MC, and who Liam was not keen to have sing on the track, was inspired to write and provide vocals for the track, the distinctive and passionate invective which completed the piece and gave it its title. Firestarter literally describing the man himself - the person who ignites the fire in people, puts life into the party, and gets people pumped. Some of the angry and self critical lyrics are deeply personal to Flint and it clearly fires him up to sing them live, that is part of the beauty of the track, and I think the thing that most resonates with the audience. Of course the title did spark some controversy in the media at the time naturaly, but that doesn't explain the singles success here. It is simply one of those rare moments in music where an anthem is born. They don't make number 1s like this anymore! There's a great interview with the band from 2019 about the making of the track here: https://www.abc.net.au/triplej/programs/mornings/inspired-the-prodigy-firestarter/10780224

By-elections 2024 (Part 2)
The Tories losing their deposit. hahahaha. Honestly that has made my day! Honestly just great to see such an amazing candidate win on a hopeful platform that defeats the rhetoric of the far-right, when the legacy media were all working against her. You'd hope Starmer would now completely change course and tack left, but I don't hold any hope of that whatsoever. Failing to recognise or even just not be completely deaf to the voting coalition that put them there in the first place has finally come to bite them. The weakness of blocking Burnham standing just epitomises his premiership. All the wrong decisions, capitulating to the smallest pressure and ending up in the worst possible position, every single time. Just for example in recent weeks when they were forced into holding the elections that they were going to delay. Trying to claim that they were always for removing the two child benefit cap when in reality they were forced into that position by the PLP and pressure from the left.. and when a year ago they were suspending MPs who voted for the SNP amendment, I'm sorry but they are reaping what they sowed. I think it's clear that Starmer will be gone after the disasterous May local elections. I guess we'll have Wes 'startled pigeon face' Streeting to look forward to. 😔

BJSC 182: Semi-Finals
Ooh I know (and love) both Smerz and 2charm, so immediate hype to those! OK, well next time I plan to send a song that is all chorus and no verses to hopefully make the AI explode.

90s Top 10 sales- Week By Week- 1999
“You Get What You Give” was the first ever single that I bought and I still have the CD single! My memory isn't totally clear but I think I went in to Our Price intending to buy Divine Comedy “National Express” but couldn't find it? I do distinctly remember that chart because I was so happy that B*Witched fell hard from 1-9 as I hated that single with a passion (!!) and we also had new entries at 14 and 16 from System F “Out Of The Blue” and Aphex Twin “Windowlicker” which kind of opened my curiosity about electronic music. One thing I love so much about reflecting and reminiscing on these 90s charts is the diversity, there's also this unbound optimism that seems to permeate. *.*

Very jealous of your back catalogue, there are some really amazing entries there - particularly opening your BJSC account with 2000s electro-pop banger “Destroy Everything You Touch” and “Unfinished Sympathy” (which is my Mum's favourite song of all-time!) From your early entries I've also got that Télépopmusik CD single somewhere and ofc love that Röyksopp pick from an album that I really obsessed over at the time, a great shame that I wasn't participating then to point those first entries. From your recent resurgence I really loved that Linda Perhacs track, a great retro pick. I also love Regina Spektor! My sister got me in to her music, she played “On The Radio” and “Fidelity” a LOT and listening to those tracks along with many others she played from artists like Lily Allen, The Dresden Dolls, Kate Nash (who was relatively unknown at the time) brings back lots of fond memories of when we drove down to the south coast one summer - I guess it must have been 2006?

The Official Labour Calmer Steering Thread (mk III)
Good riddance! Starmer looks like he'll be out in May regardless. Hardly lasting longer as PM than Sunak, so much for - 'ending the chaos'. I couldn't believe at the time the amount of political capital that was risked on Mandelson given the amount of information already out in the public domain, and am not surprised that it has blown up this government. I also can't stand all this 'I was lied to' excuses, as though that makes the decision any less reprehensible. It makes him look weak and naive and demonstrates his poor judgement. The fact that even the idea (with the knowledge known at the time) that Mandelson was considered for this high profile role, let alone accepted, is a total disgrace. This government has been treading water since it came in, and to quote Starmer himself.. indulges in the 'tepid bath of managed decline'.

Effective short songs
White Stripes “Fell In Love With a Girl” is a great shout. I used to have a playlist with all my favourite songs under 150 seconds! I do enjoy a short, punchy single that doesn't waste a second. For me, and of those not selected so far, I've always really loved The Concretes “You Can’t Hurry Love” [2:01] (#55 in 2004) which features Victoria Bergsman, who eventually managed to get a Top 40 hit with “Young Folks” (as guest vocalist) in 2006. Quite a lot packed in to just 121 seconds here, the guitars, the horns, the trumpet solo. *.* I also love “In The City” which is just 2:16 but packs a punch and has much more to it than most other songs of that length. It's something that the Strokes were able to pull off with ease in the early 2000s, have at least 3 different hooks each crashing into each other and competing for your attention. My feeling towards this is more because I strongly remember my Dad playing this in the car, but what a debut single too!

Trans & NB Artists on BBC Radio 6 Music
They also playlisted Jacob Alon ( nonbinary) last year, and have also playlisted Mykki Blanco, Arca, SOPHIE, Janelle Monáe and Christine and the Queens in the recent past. I unfortunately don't know about R1, I'd have thought that they've playlisted Christine and the Queens as “Tilted” went Top 20, but you can find everything 6Music playlisted last year here. I have managed to have 6Music on in the office for many years now, I love how diverse the music they play is and have discovered so much music through doing so. I also used to enjoy it when Mary Anne Hobbs was doing the mid-morning show, as it was always interesting to see the reactions from everyone when she started playing some banging techno at 10.30 am. *.*

Hyped for this, and especially.. the end of civilization as you know it. Struggled to find anything MUNA-esque sadly, so I'm afraid you'll have to make do with some Ecuadorian art-pop from us this month.

BJSC 180: Final Results
- Ennea │ National Thread
A very warm welcome Ennea - excited to hear your debut. x Do love the sound of all three of those seasons, but Aurea in particular appeals!- Other Radio Playlists
Thanks for posting the playlist for 6Music @Steve201 Great to see Smerz make B-list, one of my favourite tracks of last year <3 Although not credited, that The Twilight Sad track features Robert Smith of The Cure on guitar. It's one of Smith's favourite bands so it's a cute collab x- AI in BJSC
Fully agree with the general consensus in this thread. I think ultimately the problem that I have with AI is replacing the creative process entirely, so not with things like AI stem separation software being utilised to (for example, on the recent Beatles single “Now and Then”) take vocals that would otherwise be unusable to use in an entirely new piece. In many ways I see it similarly to sampling and when that became the new fad back in the 1980s, there were many examples of lazy sampling (parodied by the KLF!) which just simply cut another artists creative output and rearranged it without much thought, and also plenty of other examples - I would cite Liam Howlett of The Prodigy here - he was able to utilise obscure or very different sounding samples, which were meticulously sought out and expertly put together to change up their own piece of music. There is definitely much more creative aptitude demonstrated by the latter and IMO makes a much more interesting sound. From my own personal experience, we have increasing use of AI now in weather forecasting, at a seminar last summer which discussed AI prediction of tropical weather systems (hurricanes etc.) using historical reanalysis data, I asked about whether AI was only able to simply recreate and predict what was in the dataset already and whether it could predict unprecedented events? They explained that they had tested this and that when they took Cat 4 and Cat 5 hurricanes (the most destructive storms) from the historical training data, the AI models stopped predicting those type of events! So in the context of most things AI really it is just a reflection of our own knowledge and existing creative output and has no place in the creative industries - not only on a moral point but from a practical point too. Whether you ban outright or leave the collective to judge through the semi-finals/finals etc I'm not too fussed about, though in theory it might be easier to add it to the auto-veto list as that would protect participants from criticism (though I don't believe we would do that, see previous 2 contests) it may, as been shown here, be increasingly difficult to research and may actually exclude genuine artists in error. I don't think you can create a perfect system sadly but I think this community is supportive enough that nobody would be attacked for inadvertently sending or voting for an entirely AI produced track, so I would tend to leave it as a case-by-case basis, even if that is an imperfect solution.- Doctor Blind Chart of 2025
Thank you for the comment Dandy! ❤️ Very kind of you to say so - I wouldn't necessarily agree that I'm a great barometer but I do love barometers haha. I loved Need U More Than Ever from the first time I heard it and quickly became obsessed with Lauren Duffus, anything with breakbeats I am a sucker for. I'm not sure how well it would have done in BJSC but it would have definitely stood out I think. If you've not heard it - def check out Barker “Reframing” (No37). I think that's kind of the electronica vibe that you usually enjoy. Kelly Moran “Echo in the Field” is also similiarly leftfield classical/dance crossover which you might enjoy too - the whole album is similarly spellbinding.- Doctor Blind Chart: 4th January 2026
First chart of 2026 and there is a brand new number 1 for Avalon Emerson. “Eden” (climbing 2-1) is the first single from an as-yet unnamed forthcoming second Avalon Emerson & The Charm project which follows the self-titled debut of Emerson's experimental indie/pop output in 2023 (& the Charm). “Eden” becomes Emerson's 2nd #1 hit on the Doctor Blind Chart following “Sandrail Silhouette” (from that aforementinoed project) which spent an impressive six weeks at the top in March and April 2023. This all means sadly that British duo The Itch, after three weeks in pole position with “Space In The Cab” (the 2025 Christmas Number One), are deposed 1-2. The Top 10 remains fairly static with just 1 new song entering, that is the latest single from Charli xcx - “Chains of Love” which rises from 12-9 - taken from the soundtrack to Emerald Fennell's adaptation of Wuthering Heights, due 13 February it becomes her 11th Top 10 hit and equals the biggest hit since “Von dutch” made #9 in April 2024. Eight new entries arrive this week. Leading the charge is the return of Wesley Joseph, British songwriter, producer and filmmaker, originally from Walsall but now based in London. “If Time Could Talk” is the singer's latest single which comes with a self-directed music video shot in Paris. That comes in at 35. Jenny on Holiday (formerly of Norwich duo Let's Eat Grandma) returns with “Good Intentions” at 36, the latest single to be released from her forthcoming solo debut Quicksand Heart (due out this Friday, 9 January) following “Every Ounce of Me” which recently peaked at #2. Wolf Alice return with the 2nd single to make the chart from recent album The Clearing; 70s psychedelic influenced “White Horses” which has been picked up by 6Music recently on rotation and debuts at 39. We also see the return for Hercules & Love Affair (Andy Butler) with help from Icelandic singer/songwriter Elín Ey (aka Hips & Lips) on new single “Crossed Lines” which debuts at No.50. H&LA first appeared on my chart in 2008 collaborating with ANOHNI on the excellent “Blind” which went on to peak at #3. There are also returns this week for TVAM, james K (who had the #1 of 2025 with “Play”), and Alewya. The only debutant this week is from Edva / Maddy Street - a French indie-pop duo based in Paris formed by Edouard and Valentina, originally from Russia, but now living and creating music in France, “Euphoria” is a 7 minute dance fused epic and enters the chart at No.46. Speaking of cakes - I baked a roulade when I hosted for the final results, it was decorated with cocoa on the top around the shape 'BJSC 137', though I can't remember if I ever posted it here. I must have a photo of it somewhere. Edit- I have found it. *.* Sadly I could not share it with you because of Covid restrictions. :(- Doctor Blind Chart of 2025

Happy New Year! Welcome to the final poll of 2025's best electronica, firstly a big s/o to the ever hard working @k👠th for holding the fort last month and helping to put together this month's playlist - there are still a few brave artists releasing new singles in the musical and cultural wasteland of the 'December release schedule' so big props to those who have released and made the playlist this month. Thank you to those who voted in the poll last month, we actually ended up with another tie between Danny L Harle, Oklou & MNEK's collab. “Crystallise My Tears” and Overmono's “Paradise Runner” - so there is a tie-breaker to decide this month. In terms of this month, there is a wide selection of new & well established artists with modern club energy and emotionally charged electronica for you to enjoy! Plus some unexpected swerves, and also a cheers to Tourist who nods towards our artwork for ETotM on their new album artwork! Please vote for your 3 favourites. I'm not at all shocked given the recent actions of the US (sustained airstrikes on Venezuelan ships) which were in direct contravention of both US and International Law - this felt like it was inevitable at some point. Obviously Maduro, like Putin, is a corrupt, human rights abusing dictatorial leader, and the vast majority of Venezuela will not be at all sad to see him go but this sets a dangerous precedent. What now for Greenland? What now for Taiwan? Ditto - Starmer's response. His approach so far has been to flatter and fawn around the President in a doomed attempt to mitigate against his worst and most dangerous actions and as you can see that approach is working really well.. We are truly in the age of impunity. - Ennea │ National Thread
