Taylor Swift comfortably wins a third week at the top of the singles chart with Patient Zero, helped by the release of a new batch of physical copies. In the days when all singles sales were physical copies, this was standard practise although it wasn’t until the 1980s that there was a steady stream of remixes over the course of several weeks. It has a particularly big impact now that a single sale is of greater value than hundreds of streams.
Jamie Miller climbs one place to a new peak of number two with Babydoll. Ashe’s Stop The Weeding also gets a new peal by climbing to number three. Sienna Spiro’s Great Expectation falls to number four. Adela climbs back up to number five with Nicole Kidman.
Expectations has been in and out of the top 100 recently as it has battled to be one of Olivia Rodrigo’s three most popular songs of the week. In that time, it has always finished outside the top forty. That changes this week as it enters at number 35. Until a few months ago, no song with the word expectation (or expectations) had reached the top 100. This week there are two in the top forty.
R&B artist Season 25 makes his UK chart debut at number 38 with Shotta’s. Shotta’s what?
That is it as far as the new entries go, but there is another batch of re-entries, including one that was last seen in the top forty in 2013. Pink had a number two hit that year with Give Ne A Reason, alongside Nate Reuss from fun. The song is now back at number fifteen. Will it return to the top ten?
Robyn’s Dancing On My Own is back again at number 36. The Killers’ obscure Mr Brightside is at number 39.Natasha bedingfield bounces back in at number 40 with Unwritten.

In interviews to promote his new album Jamie T has been reflecting on the fact that his most famous songs are still those he wrote in his teens. These songs, such as Sheila, Stocks ‘n’ Stones and Calm Down Dearest, are now two decades old. His new album Ghosts (100 Days Of Morning) was one of two new albums battling for the number one spot in the albums chart.
Jamie T’s rivals for the top spot were Chase & Status who made their breakthrough shortly after he did. Their hit singles have included collaborations with Tinie Tempah, Plan B and Giggs. The collaborators on their new album, Generic Everything, include Skrillex, J Hus and Giggs again.
After all the sales and streams were counted, Jamoe T was declared the winner with Ghosts (100 Days Of Morning) becoming his second consecutive number one album. Chase & Status finished in second place.
Troye Sivan makes it four top ten albums from four releases with She’s The Best at number nine.
Traditionally, a supergroup was assumed to comprise a number of big names from some very famous bands. The Temperance Movement, described in some places as a supergroup, comprise a former member of White Buffalo (who?) and some musicians who have played in backing bands for a number of big names. Not so super, then. They are at number eleven with New Promise Land Incorporated.
If we include the pre-chart era, Wigan’s biggest musical stars are probably George Formby and, more recently, The Verve. Lesser-known names who have had limited chart success include The Railway Children and The Lathums. Limahl fits somewhere in-between. One band hoping to make their way up to the more illustrious end of that list are the Lilacs whose debut album, Keeping Up With The Joneses, is at number twelve.
A Man For The Future is a piece written by the Pet Shop Boys and performed at a BBC Prom in 2014. It was written to commemorate the life of Alan Turing, one of the 20th century’s great geniuses whose work in World War 2 was a major contributor to Britain’s survival, and whose work was a precursor to today’s Artificial Intelligence revolution. Oh, and he also envisaged what was to become the internet.
Following the Proms performance, there was no album release so the piece was largely forgotten. Now, however, it has been revived and given a belated release, albeit in a revised version.
The piece covers Turing’s life from falling in love with another boy at school (the boy died of tuberculosis while still at school) to his own death by poisoning before concluding with the posthumous apology issued by then-Prime Minister Gordon Brown in 2009 and his eventual pardon in 2013. The pardon was later extended to all men convicted of consensual homosexual acts.
Turing’s original computer, The Bombe, was designed to do just one job - decipher German messages sent using the Enigma machine. However, his vision was that there would be computers capable of being programmed to perform multiple tasks. Furthermore, he predicted that these machines would be able to store pictures and sound and would be able to communicate with each other. Because he was right, you are able to read this now.
The story is narrated by actor Juliet Stevenson while Andrew Hodges, author of one of the most acclaimed biographies of Turing is included in the writing credits. The piece is far from a normal Pet Shop Boys album although Neil Tennant’s vocals are just as distinctive as ever. It is debatable whether it should be counted as a standard studio album. Many fans who also follow the charts would argue that it should not, meaning that their 100% top ten record would remain intact. A Man From The Future is a new entry at number nineteen.
Basht., a band from Dublin who think it is cool to have a full-stop at the end of their name, are at number 28 with Poor Advice. I shall make no further comment about the album title and that silly full-stop.
Greta van Fleet add their name to the list of charting bands whose name sounds like a person are at number 40 with Palace For The People.
