U2 to Stream Entire Concert Live on YouTube

October 20, 2009

LONDON (Reuters) - U2 will stream an entire concert live on the YouTube video sharing site this weekend, the Irish band said on their website.

Sunday's show at the Rose Bowl in California is already a sellout, with an audience of 96,000 expected, and U2 said it would be the first time for such a large show to be streamed live.

"The band has wanted to do something like this for a long time," said manager Paul McGuinness in a statement.

"As we're filming the LA show, it's the perfect opportunity to extend the party beyond the stadium. Fans often travel long distances to come to see U2 -- this time U2 can go to them, globally."

Google Inc's YouTube will stream the concert across five continents, and two replays will be available after the live feed -- on www.U2.com and YouTube.

The band behind hits like "Beautiful Day" and "Sunday Bloody Sunday" kicked off the U2 360 Tour in Barcelona in June and has boasted high attendances by using a circular platform that can be viewed from all sides of arena.

YouTube has had an uneasy relationship with the record industry in recent years, with labels arguing that popular social networking and online video sites should pay them more for the right to feature their artists.

At the same time they recognize the importance of maintaining their presence on sites that help shape young fans' musical tastes.

Log On Watch This: U2 Live

Bono and his band's Sunday gig will be available free on YouTube

By By Matt Warman

Published: 6:33PM BST 22 Oct 2009

More than 96,000 fans will see U2 perform their penultimate gig of 2009 on Sunday – a lot more. The group’s decision to webcast their show at the Pasadena Rose Bowl in California for free and in full via the video-sharing website YouTube was announced, of course in a video blog. It means that the site’s millions of users in selected countries – including the USA, the UK, Ireland (of course), Canada, Japan, Brazil, Australia, and beyond – will all be able to follow the band’s “360º Tour”.

Few fans are likely to complain that they now have the opportunity to watch a U2 gig for free. It’s worth bearing in mind, however, that this giveaway is also a giant advert: it’s partly taking place because the band wants to sell more tickets to next year’s live shows and more copies of their latest album, No Line on the Horizon.

Indeed, the tour itself has received mixed reviews, with some critics highlighting the band’s bravura showmanship while others have found the in-the-round performances to be impersonal and lacking in audio quality for the audience. Viewers at home might even find that they have the best view. In the UK, unfortunately, fans will have to get up at 3.30am if they want to watch live. But it will be on-demand on YouTube afterwards.

U2 fans’ beautiful day ruined by poor broadband

23rd October 2009 by Jonathan Leggett

• Poor broadband connections to make U2’s historic live online broadcast unwatchable for thousands of fans

• England vs Ukraine broadcast highlights potential problems

Millions of music fans hoping to witness a U2 show online that’s even better than catching the real thing live could be left disappointed, according to Top 10 Broadband, as poor connections put paid to what promised to be a landmark moment in music history.

Sunday will mark the first time that a gig from a major, stadium-filling act has been broadcast live on video-sharing site YouTube. An audience of millions is expected for U2’s appearance at California’s Rosebowl stadium, which is being shown in 16 countries across the globe.

Despite the UK broadcast time of 4.30am on Monday morning, fans are expected to stay up to watch the show in huge numbers. YouTube is confident that its servers will be able to cope with the surge in usage.

The video site’s confidence is echoed by Sean Adams of Drowned in Sound, whose site has successfully hosted live shows from Arctic Monkeys and The Dead Weather. He said: “Technology has progressed a lot and I'm sure YouTube/Google have it in hand, in the same way streaming News 24 via iPlayer has it sorted using P2P-like methods to share the bandwidth weight.”

But as the recent experience of England supporters shows, music fans with broadband connection speeds of below 2MB are likely to find their enjoyment of the U2 gig is hampered by poor quality images and interruptions to the stream.

Official figures show that the average connection speed across the UK is 3.6Mb. However figures gleaned from Top 10 Broadband’s interactive coverage map show many parts of the UK experience connections well below this level.

Alex Buttle, Marketing Director at Top 10 Broadband, said: “Just two weeks after the historic online-only broadcast of England’s game against the Ukraine, we are witnessing another landmark event in the history of the internet.

“The 360 stage set is one of the most technologically advanced ever staged – rivalled only by the multi-media blitz that was the Zoo TV tour. So it’s especially ironic that thousands of UK fans’ enjoyment will be spoiled by slow broadband connections that threaten to turn their beautiful day into a nightmare”

 Yip, I've no intention of watching for that very reason. My broadband is so slow it's almost impossible to watch any video without Stop Start Stop Start :arrr:

We've just heard you'll be able to watch U2's live stream on YouTube where ever you are.

If you've got access to the net, if you can get YouTube, you can watch U2 live on Sunday night from the Rose Bowl.

They're billing it as the world's greatest band on the world's largest stage. That stage just got bigger.

This is brillliant news :cheer:

Although I cant see myself staying up that late,. I am sure it will be available for download though. Will it be released on DVD for Xmas? :o

I don't want to get up that early. There must be download later, someone will record it, for sure.
Who will watch it live?

I didn't get up early but I did watch some of it today

I really hope they release it on dvd soon, in time for Christmas would be great, so I

can add it to my list!

The streaming is really slow tonight, I'm unable to watch it properly

Same case with me. And now it's on YT.

I had nice watching, until WOWY.

All in all, great. :cheer:

But, I read that people are complaining about Bono's voice. It wasn't that bad, just it was better during this tour.
