I was recently introduced to The Postal Service by a uni friend and I love them! Which album would you reccommend I buy first?

So many great tunes there btw. Brought back loads of memories and also really surprised to see random Amerie/Girls Aloud/Britney Spears thrown in :P

Thanks Graham, rather a lot there. The Postal Service only released one album, so I think that's the one you should check out! :P

I shall be writing a bit about it tomorrow.... ^_^

Interpol 'Turn On the Bright Lights (2002)

For a long while I ranked this album as my favourite of the decade, but when listening to the top 10 to ultimately rank them I realised that whilst still an incredible album, isn't quite as good as the four above it. I wasn't really aware of Interpol until 2004 when they released their second album, but I thought they were good enough to take a listen to their previous work. I'd seen hype surrounding their debut (especially the single 'Obstacle 1') but didn't think it was going to be quite as good as it was. It's very dark and moody in places and whilst their sound isn't massively original, anyone with any knowledge of the scene would guess New York, early 00s, this album is so much better than any of their more commercially successful and critically acclaimed peers have produced.

The Postal Service 'Give Up'

For people who don't know them, The Postal Service were essentially a side project made up of Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie) and Jimmy Tamborello (Dntel, Figurine), they're called The Postal Service as it's how they made their records. Ben recorded his vocals and posted them to Jimmy who'd add them to his music. There have always been acts which have become successful because of 'Word of Mouth' advertising but the Postal Service were one of the first bands to benefit from this on the internet, which is exactly how I discovered them in 2005. I'd recently signed up to Last.fm (then Audioscrobbler) and wondered what this song in the top 5 most played songs was given I'd never heard of it or the band before. I downloaded 'Such Great Heights' and was pretty mesmerised, I could see why so many people were listening to it, just fantastic, by far the bese electronic music I'd ever heard (and have still ever heard). It's a shame they've not done anything since and aren't likely to either. Still, I can live in hope that one day they might make some more music. It'd be good if they were around now, to show the world that instead of having Owl f***ing City, you could have the genuine article. Whilst I don't mind Owl City and 'Fireflies' is an alright song, it sounds like something that The Postal Service would've been ashamed to release as a b-side.

Elbow 'The Seldom Seen Kid' (2008)

For years Elbow were a band who I thought were ok but never really had any interest in checking out fully. Then they released 'One Day Like This' and the rest is history. I bought this around the time it was nominated for the Mercury award and by the end of the year had listened to it so much I'd completely fallen in love with it. Whilst many seem to consider their debut and possible second albums as better than this I think this a far more consistant effort. It's so incredibly beautiful the whole of the way through and Guy Garvey's voice is so angelic throughout. Album closer and tribute to Brian Glancy ('The Seldom Seen Kid') is tearjerking, especially when you hear the band talk about him.

Animal Collective 'Merriweather Post Pavillion' (2009)

Just over a year ago I read a lot of things on the internet about the first great album of 2009 being 'Merriweather Post Pavillion'. I'd never really paid any attention to Animal Collective before but decided it would be worth checking out. It was fairly unlike stuff I've ever listened to with lots of different sounds and samples. It's far more accessible than previous albums but I certainly enjoy it a lot more. It's also the perfect album to get lost in, it's almost 55 minutes in length but it's so happy and joyous, to do nothing and listen to it through my iPod it's absolutely stunning. Their 'Fall Be Kind' EP which they released in November is a progression of this album and is just as good. In 2010 I'm going to make sure I complete their back catalogue.

Arcade Fire 'Funeral' (2004)

It took a long while to really begin to appreciate Arcade Fire, I thought the early singles were ok but it wasn't until I heard 'Rebellion (Lies)' that I really took any notice of them. Even then after I bought the album it took me a few listens before I thought they were anything more than pretentious toss! They certainly took a while to get into, the music and lyrics are often quite dark (hardly unsurprising though given the 'funeral' theme) but over time it managed to work its way inside my head. Unlike a lot of other albums towards the top I think this is short on standout tracks, half of the album were released as singles but only 'Rebellion' made my top 200 of the decade, however what this album is is incredibly consistant throughout. There isn't a weak second on the whole thing. The use of so many people and instruments is also a massive strong point, the organs, strings and brass that appear throughout give it that even greater lift. #2 on Pitchfork's album of the decade, #6 in Q, #6 in Rolling Stone, #7 in NME, #7 in Uncut, top 10 in The Word. They can't all be wrong, can they!

I do like some of the others too but I've just stuck to the very best... great list as always. Your top 5 is particularly excellent, all albums that are a compelling listen from beginning to end. I'm also pleased to see you've warmed to Silent Shout over Deep Cuts now too - the former would be high on my list. :D
