Posted July 2, 200618 yr David Beckham has decided to step down as England captain after holding the role for six years. But the Real Madrid star does want to continue his international career. The three obvious choices to take over the armband are: John Terry, Steven Gerrard and Gary Neville. IMO Neville would make a great captain but I don't think it'll be too long until he quits international football, which leaves Terry and Gerrard who would both make excellent captians IMO.
July 2, 200618 yr :o  Even though he is an idiot I still thought he was a good captain. Anyway I think Stevie G, not Neville.
July 2, 200618 yr I think that was quite clever of him to jump before he was pushed :( IMO Gerrard should definitely get it if not then Gary Neville, anyone but John Terry -_- for a start he hasn't been a regular first team player until this tournament.
July 2, 200618 yr The odds are with Terry at the moment But Neville played great yesterday, a proper leader
July 2, 200618 yr I think I am about the only one that has an admiration for Beckham He is a great role model both on and off the pitch
July 2, 200618 yr I think I am about the only one that has an admiration for Beckham He is a great role model both on and off the pitch You're not alone ;) I've defended him throughout the tournament as he is a great player and was responsible for nearly every goal we scored in the tournament and as you said he's a great role model and one of the most famous footballers in the world because of the talent he has, he may not be as good as he was but he was a great captain and will deservadly get his 100th cap soon (he's on 94 so far...) but he probably won't be an automatic first choice from now on.
July 2, 200618 yr I think I am about the only one that has an admiration for Beckham He is a great role model both on and off the pitch I think like a lot of great British sportsmen (Ian Botham, Daley Thompson, Seb Coe, Nigel Mansell, Nick Faldo, Lennox Lewis, etc) his greatness will be appreciated only after his career has ended & we will then realise that we do not have anyone who can cross the ball as good as him or take free kicks as good as him within the England Football team.
July 2, 200618 yr Hope it's G Neville, he has the most experience out of the three. Nooooooooooo! He has no respect for anyone!
July 2, 200618 yr Author I think I am about the only one that has an admiration for Beckham He is a great role model both on and off the pitch Yes Beckham is a great role model to young kids but I think that this was the time for him to move on. Like most other England fans I feel glum today -_- , the world cup talk just makes me more and more depressed. Both Steven Gerrard and John Terry would make wonderul capatins as they both give there hearts and souls into their club teams. Come the euro's and the next world cup call this optomistic but I think we'll better oursleves. Most of the squad should all still be around for them, and there are some brilliant young english players emerging.
July 2, 200618 yr Beckham has been a good captain. He has the leadreship qualities which are VITAL and in all fairness I think he had a great World Cup. Big JT should get the captaincy now though in my opinion. He's got the 'look' of a captain and certainly can lead the team and get them pumped up. Based on this WC ALONE he should get it.
July 2, 200618 yr Sunday, July 02, 2006 David Beckham resigns as England captain David Beckham has resigned as England captain. He has described the decision as the most difficult of his career but has stated he wants to continue to play for England. Beckham appeared tearful as he delivered a statement he wrote following the defeat to Portugal in the World Cup quarter-final. http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/5839/730/1600/db_engl2548.jpg David's Statement "On 15 November 2000 Peter Taylor gave me the greatest honour of my career in making me captain of England and fulfilling my childhood dream. Now almost six years later, having been captain for 58 of my 95 caps, I feel the time is right to pass on the armband as we enter in a new era under Steve McLaren. It has been an honour and a privilege to have captained our country and I want to stress that I wish to continue to play for England and look forward to helping both the new captain and Steve McLaren in any way I can. I came to this decision some time ago but I had hoped to announce it on the back of a successful World Cup - sadly that wasn't to be. This decision has been the most difficult of my career to date. But after discussing it with my family and the closest to me I feel it is the time is right. Our performance during this World Cup has not been enough to progress and both myself and all the players regret that and are hurt by that more than people realise. I wish to thank all the players for their support during my time as captain, as well - Peter Taylor, Sven and all the coaches. I would also like to thank the press and of course the England supporters who have been both great to me and my teammates and I want them to know for me it has been an absolute honour. Finally I have lived the dream. I am extremely proud to have worn the armband and been captain of England and for that I will always be grateful. Thankyou."
July 2, 200618 yr Gerrard should become captain. He's shown more leadership skills than Beckham has in the last few weeks, and his captaincy of Liverpool is testement to that.
July 3, 200618 yr its a good move really as he has done the world cup and probably wants to quit while in terms should i dare say is still ahead, and also probably quit before people start pushing him to quit now that they are out of thw rold cup
