November 16, 200915 yr Saying X Factor is "manipulating" the chart is ridiculous. If you're getting invited onto X Factor, then by definition you've earned it - the ONLY way you get a spot on the show is if you're an A-Lister already. I could understand the criticism if Simon Cowell was inviting nobodies from his record label to perform when they didn't deserve it, but ALL the acts on this series have been superstars in their own right, except for maybe Michael Buble. And besides, it goes without saying that even if you're performing to millions, people still have to LIKE the song to buy it. Last week's XF got its biggest ratings of the series by far, but despite that, Leona still sold far less than Alexandra and Cheryl. And Shakira looks like she's going to make barely any dent at all. In fact, even for Cheryl's huge sales - when you think that 12m watched her perform, but only about 3% of those people actually bought her single in the first week, that's actually a shockingly small number when you think about it in those terms. That makes me think that, in the years to come, as more and more older people start downloading music, we're going to see sales for acts performing on XF climb even higher. What a completely ludicrous WUM post. This is the same Simon Cowell who described David Bowie & Kate Bush (arguably the UK's greatest male and female artists of all-time) as the most overrated British acts whom he fails to see what is good and talented about them. Whilst he said a similar thing with regards to the most important musical act of all time The Beatles, saying that he personally regards Abba & Queen as more talented and who have written better songs. FFS the idiot said in September this year that The Beatles would fail an audition of the X-Factor, which tells you everything if John & Edward make the grade yet the band who went on to sell more records than any other act in music history would not.... Simon Cowell is a businessman who happened to get a job in the music industry and has gone about corrupting the charts, in a level that his original inspiration Pete Waterman fell out with Simon because Pete thought Simon was taking things too far. Also there are significant number of songwriters who have activated clauses in their publishing so their songs cannot be used on this pathetic excuse for a music talent show. That is why you will not hear any Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Kinks, David Bowie (it has been reported this evening that he has let Queen/X-Factor know that he is not happy that his co-composition "Under Pressure" was used on the show on Saturday), Paul Weller, Kate Bush, Depeche Mode, The Cure, The Smiths, Pet Shop Boys, (post Beatles) Paul McCartney, Blur, Radiohead, etc songs on the show since they have all blocked their compositions being used in such a way ..... and now that Sting has seemingly added his own songwriting to the blockade ... so no more Every Breath You Take or Fields Of Gold in the auditions. Hence, that is why a lot of the same old songs are used again and again because an awful lot of songs are persona non gratia.
November 16, 200915 yr Why would they do that? The show is a huge hit as it is. They won't change the format and risk losing the audience. Simon isn't a fool. He recognises the effect the X Factor has upon the charts - such a move won't lose the audience (did you see an audience being lost by moving it to two nights? or by introducing two guest performances?), but will only increase the profits of the music industry (as well as his own Syco label depending on the performers...)!

November 16, 200915 yr Whilst what you have said is true, you didn't actually answer his point in any way whatsoever ;) Hahaha, quite. I actually agree with everything TIP said, of course Simon Cowell is an idiot, but none of what he said anything to do with either the topic or my post. Am I supposed to know what "WUM" means?

Exactly, Simon isn't a fool. He NEVER made any abrupt changes on the format, those were minimal changes. However, to add charts elements on the show would be a big change. The focus is on the contestants, not the musical guests. Of course have A-listers help build momentum and give the show some buzz, but to add over two acts would be pathetic. The public isn't tuning in to see Top of the Pops, they want to see a reality show. They couldn't care less about the charts. To assume they do is to risk losing a huge chunk of the show audience. Did i say that Sting would go on - i was merely speculating, so don't sound like your superior. And i read on digital Spy i minute ago that he has declined. Why Simon is clever is because Sting can not win in this situation. If he goes on - he risks being made (through editing) to look like a twit. And by not going on, it looks like Simon's won What? It doesn't make ANY difference for Sting's public image if he decides not to go, it's not a lose-lose situation for him. By not going he is merely making it very clear he thinks the show is dumb and that he would never consider going on it. The only way he could "lose" was by accepting Simon's invitation which would never happen. Edited November 16, 200915 yr by André
November 16, 200915 yr You know, wasnt it reported that Katy Perry had also banned her songs from being used. Yet Lloyd was allowed to murder I Kissed A Girl?
November 16, 200915 yr Still think they should give TOTPs another go though! Thursday nights again! absolutley!!! can't believe there isn't space in the schedules somewhere for it??!

Not really. They would still tune in for the show itself - they might not care about the charts, but I doubt many of them have an active antipathy towards the charts themselves. As long as they're sensibly interwoven I really doubt anybody would start to turn off.

But you see ... this is where I get confused. If you're an 'A' lister already ... what the feck do you need the X-Factor to make you go further? If the show was truly about trying to promote new talent ... why not give its guest spots to acts that need a bit of exposure. Maybe it would be a better idea to invite these 'nobodies', and just maybe get the audience think! But then again ... I read something today and it quoted a line from a Jam song ..... 'the public gets what the public wants' (or viz-a-viz). It as a tabloid ... but the bloke was right! People are lazy and they want to be spoon-fed what they should be listening to. They can't be arsed to go out and listen to acts in pubs and clubs ... they'd rather sit in on a Saturday night and be led to what they 'should be listening to' by Lord Simon. Logan's Run ... here we come! We'll all be dead by 30 so roll on Carousel! Norma Edited November 16, 200915 yr by Norma_Snockers
November 16, 200915 yr So most the year i'm reading posts in BJ about bad single sales, albums are poor this month etc etc. Sales have been higher than ever these past few weeks. reason, yes we all know, XFactor. Surely as a chart based forum that should be celebrated by all. and any haters who say it makes the charts predictable should review the battle for No1 this last week. Over 60% of us got that wrong !!

Seeing as the battle was between a song that had been performed by the artist on X-Factor versus a song that had been performed by the artist on X-Factor slightly sinks your argument.
November 17, 200915 yr Seeing as the battle was between a song that had been performed by the artist on X-Factor versus a song that had been performed by the artist on X-Factor slightly sinks your argument. Exactly, both Meet Me Halfway and Happy were performed on Sunday night... I hate You Are Not Alone - another embarassing number 1 to come!
November 17, 200915 yr I wonder if Calvin Harris will benefit for jumping on stage with a pineapple on his head! Lets face it, its as much media hype then the programme itself Jarvis Cocker didn't benefit much from jumping on stage at the Brits and mooning when Michael Jackson was on stage performing, apart from showing what a scrawny arse he had.
November 17, 200915 yr Jarvis Cocker didn't benefit much from jumping on stage at the Brits and mooning when Michael Jackson was on stage performing, apart from showing what a scrawny arse he had. Hmm I think you are wrong there ;) He only created one of the best moments in pop history.
November 17, 200915 yr Hmm I think you are wrong there ;) He only created one of the best moments in pop history. Maybe as a spectacle, but it didn't do anything for his music career did it?
November 17, 200915 yr Maybe as a spectacle, but it didn't do anything for his music career did it? Well it confirmed him as a man of opinion, and made him a hero for thousands of people who think MJ was an abomination (me included) But no it didn't do anything for this musical career in terms of sales ;-)

TBF, Shakira has climbed from #110 before the performance to #19 now, three other of her songs re-entered the top 200 on iTunes, and ehr album's rebounded back into the top 40. ----------------- I don't see any problem whatsoever with people performing on xfactor. It's not manipulation - it's promotion, just like any other music/chat show where people perform, would you say other tv shows "manipulate" the charts? It just so happens that the show is watched by a third of the population, lol. Edited November 17, 200915 yr by Kiseki
November 17, 200915 yr To be honest, sales-wise X-Factor has reached its peak. There is tough competition now, and that's why Leona has slightly underperformed and now the Finalists were sold less than Alexandra in two days. I mean that the public buying the XF-related stuff can't buy ALL of the songs and the albums. And the sales are spread not by only few songs (Hero, Run, Hallelujah) like last year, but by lots of singles like Bad Boys, Fight For This Love, Everybody In Love, Happy, You Are Not Alone, the winner's song and plenty of others which were performed on this show, plus the albums: Overcome, JLS, Echo, 3 Words... That's why the X-Factor won't get the Top-2 singles monopoly in the year-end chart. I think only Cheryl will manage to get Top5 placing in the singles. I can't tell much about the albums though.
