Posted November 30, 200915 yr heres some news that ive only just heard http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/artic...econd-time.html that makes very sad reading, i like mike read, one of the best 'old school' radio 1 dj's and he was passionate about music, especially the 60's...
November 30, 200915 yr According to the BBC report, it's to pay money owed to the taxman. So while it's sad to see a collection like this broken up, if he'd paid his taxes like a good boy (the sort of Mr Clean who got Relax banned from Radio 1), he wouldn't have to do this. No doubt the Beatles collection includes Taxman and You Never Give Me Your Money.

Totally agree mate.... If this is the reason why he's selling off, well, sorry, not gonna feel too sorry for him really.... The likes of you and I cant avoid paying taxes, so why the fukk should I feel any sympathy for someone who deliberately avoids paying tax finally being caught up with.... Also, I will NEVER forgive him for getting "Relax" banned.... What a fukkin' holier-than-thou c/unt..... <_<
November 30, 200915 yr Author it wasnt so much as tax avoidance as 'putting it off until things improve' after that venture went wrong. he delayed tax payment knowing he had interest to pay, hoping for a cash injection when that west end play took off. it bombed leaving him high n dry. imho his 'good points' outweigh the bad i like him.
December 1, 200915 yr Author Also, I will NEVER forgive him for getting "Relax" banned.... What a fukkin' holier-than-thou c/unt..... <_< .... so you think its ok for a song overtly refering to how to enjoy sex is acceptable for broadcasting to minors? ... besides, banning hardly did it any harm! behind only band aid was the second biggest selling single of 84.
December 2, 200915 yr .... so you think its ok for a song overtly refering to how to enjoy sex is acceptable for broadcasting to minors? ... Well, I was a minor, and, frankly, a lot of it largely went over my head, didn't see what all the fuss was about...... It wasn't a song which disrespected women for example, was it...? And yet, there seems to be no problems whatsoever in playing fukkin' "urban" tracks which routinely refer to women as "bitches" and "hos" So, the reason for censoring the brilliant "Two Tribes" video would be..........? -_-

Also, I will NEVER forgive him for getting "Relax" banned.... What a fukkin' holier-than-thou c/unt..... <_< Why???? According to ZTT founders Paul Morley & Trevor Horn that was the best PR that record could have ever had which they were able to exploit successfully within the media. The publicity enabled that song to be a big hit single jumping quickly up the charts because as it was banned no one could tape it off the radio so they had to buy a physical copy. Proof it's chart run (thanks to Polyhex) before it was banned and receiving radio airplay: 67-55-54-55-46-46-35 On the week when it was banned it's chart run was then: -6-2-{1}-1-1-1-1-2-3-6-16-21-23-21-29-29-31-26-24-21-17-16-11-5-3-2-2-3-3-3-6-7-12-20-22-29-41-47-50-66-71-68R(17)-58-64-74 A bit of a difference.
December 2, 200915 yr I thought Relax getting banned was the best thing that could have happened. It was, as you say, a great PR stroke! I remember seeing poster in Liverpool on buses and on walls 'Big Banned and Beautiful'! With regard to Mike Read ... cannot stand the odious little toad! I worked for Waddingtons when he came up with his 'Mike Read's Pop Quiz' board game. It was a pile of sh/te but we had to wax lyrical about it. He tried to chat up one of my mates at the launch party ... with little success. He was a sh/t DJ as well as a sh/t games designer! Norma Edited December 2, 200915 yr by Norma_Snockers
December 2, 200915 yr ^ Pop tastic mate! aOOU415cpM4 1min 55 seconds in: "Listeners, I have in my hand a piece of filth, the new single by Paul McCartney and the Frogs Chorous, which contains the refrain "bum, bum, bum bum bum bum. I don't want to hear about your nether regions Mr McCartney and I'm not playing this $h!t on my show. Here's Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Relax". :D
December 2, 200915 yr He was never my favourite Radio 1 DJ, and anyone who owes that much tax must have the earnings that relate to that tax bill. So if he spends all his money without putting away an amount to cover his tax liability, then he's a silly bugger really. I read he has been dogged with money problems for a while, maybe if he hadn't bought all those albums he might have more cash left over to pay his tax bill. That's assuming he bought all the albums and they weren't freebies from the Beeb. :) Having said that it is some collection.
December 2, 200915 yr He was not a Ken Dodd or Lester Piggott I don't think that he maliciously defrauded, he just was someone who was clueless about money and got out of his depth like spending it all on this play thinking it would make him $h!tloads of money and then losing the lot and not being able to pay his tax

He didn't do it to "help" Frankie though mate, I doubt it was in his mind that "hey, if I ban this really cool record and pretend that I hate it, then people will buy it"... He did it out of some ludicrous, Tabloid/Mary Whitehouse sense of "Moral Outrage"... he could have just said "I'm not gonna play it on my show" and left it at that.... I dont particularly like these Urban or Hip Hop records which denegrate women, but, hey, guess what, I just dont LISTEN to them (hell, unlike "Relax" they're not even good tunes)..... I figure they'll disappear up their own arse quicker than if someone takes a stupid "moral stance" over it which conversely hypes them up... I do laugh at the irony that his ludicrous stance made it become one of the biggest selling singles of all time, but that was more the country sticking two fingers up to the likes of Read and saying "fukk you, I wont do what you tell me"....

So if he spends all his money without putting away an amount to cover his tax liability, then he's a silly bugger really. Well, yeah, exactly.... It's all very well Craig going on about him being a bit "clueless" about money, but what the fukk was his bloody ACCOUNTANT or Financial Advisor telling him he should do....? Presumably he would have someone actually advising him.. And if not, he's an even sillier bugger, no accountant or Financial Advisor worth their salt is gonna tell him that it's a good idea to sink money into a ridiculous venture like this rather than paying their taxes.....

I still have doubts as to the impact Read really had on it, sure it got publicity through him but it did well largely because it was an excellent song, I don't think there was mass teen rebellion to get at Mike Read, his show was broadcast when most record buyers were at school There was no massive rise in sales for songs by Carter Unstoppable Sex Machine when political correctness reared its ugly head at Radio 1 and presenters simply had to call them Carter instead of proper name, that didn't spark a sales surge of teen rebellion against political correctness on Radio 1, pretty sure they had a song banned by BBC too around time of first Gulf war  that never made #1 in protest Edited December 3, 200915 yr by B.A Baracus

They actually did pretty alright for a time in the early 90s, a couple of good albums....
