December 15, 200915 yr Author So according to Simon Cowell in the X-Factor Final Don't Stop Believin' is an unknown song, yes sure it is Simon, that is why the original Journey 1981 track was the most downloaded song from the 1980s in the USA this decade? Everyone knows Journey surely? I thought Cowell has a bit more musical knowledge that he seems to process.
December 15, 200915 yr I wouldn't say Don't Stop Believin' is unknown by any means but (and not wishing to stick up for Simon Cowell) I've asked around my friends and family and I'd say that over 80% of them didn't have a clue what the song was prior to this year it's incredibly well known in the US - and had a cult following in the UK and was a small hit in the 80's but I wouldn't call it 'really well known' - a bit like Bryan Adams' Heaven which was one of his smaller hits here, even though many of us were aware of the song - which later became incredibly popular thanks to DJ Sammy Heaven (original) and Don't Stop Belivin' have hardly been British radio standards so although I don't think that Simon should claim that it's an unknown song, it's certainly been introduced to a whole new audience via X Factor/Glee unlike other 80's rock classics like Livin' On A Prayer/With Or Without You which are never off UK radio

It was massive in the USA - got to #9 in December 1981. In the UK it got to # 62 in March 1982. Because of XFactor it got to #19 this year and it's on its way to peak this week. So he was kinda right...
December 15, 200915 yr Sorry ... but I can't believe that anyone over 25 hasn't heard of 'Don't Stop Believing'. Norma

For goodness sake it was used in the last four minutes of the Final ever episode of one of the most watched and iconic TV shows worldwide including the UK of the 2000s with surely one of the greatest ever endings to a cliffhanger that annoyed so many people at the time which is why I love it because it leaves things open to the imagination.... rnT7nYbCSvM The Sopranos Final Scene

December 15, 200915 yr u09h1BKANxk Family Guy - Don't Stop Believin' (sorry about the poor quality) 23vyRRBJo9k Scrubs - Don't Stop Believin' Still Simon Cowell knows best after all I always thought We Can Work It Out was a Beatles song, but no apparently I'm wrong it is a Stevie Wonder song (which he covered in 1971 making USA#13). I'm sure that is news to Sir Paul McCartney who only wrote the song (with John Lennon contributing the 12 bar "Life is very short... " passage) that was Xmas #1 in 1965 in the UK & USA for The Beatles selling over 8 million copies worldwide. 59NNupminV8 The Beatles - We Can Work It Out

He just assumes that most of the audience are.
December 15, 200915 yr TBH, as much as people try to deny it, Journey's is a pretty unknown song in this country. I've heard it played twice in clubs, but that was only since X Factor. I recognise it, not from X Factor, but from Family Guy - which is of course American, where the song is well known.

In both York and where I am at Uni tis a massive student anthem and everyone seems to know the words! It's absolutely massive in America (adopted national anthem) but I still think it's quite well known in the UK...
December 16, 200915 yr Joe has worked hard? not really Simon Cowell has worked hard, You label RATM as 'AWFUL' just because it is opposing a song you like and because it isnt a pop song, sad really. Is Joe's dream to become a puppet to the music industry? poor guy. Oh and I have been a fan of Rage years and years before this campaign, so dont give me $h!t that i'm in it just to spite Simon Cowell, although I am in it to spite him since the press conference, wasnt before, if he wasnt talking like a prize of winning the x factor is getting the christmas number 1, like he owned it, we wouldnt hate him EVEN MORE. Why should Joe get number 1 because it's his dream? god that is sad bull$h!t, why should he get number 1 anyway? he doesnt deserve number 1 one f***ing bit. since when does someone deserve to be number 1 because they were on the f***ing x factor. really pisses me off how the music industry works these days, i dont give a f*** if it's his 'dream', if it was his dream maybe he should of legitimately got a record deal instead of going on a f***ing tv show 'i dream of getting number 1 so i'll go on the x factor cos if i win that i'm garenteed to be number 1' :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: big break? since when do RATM 1) need a big break?, 2) are the type of band who gives a $h!t when they have a big break. Can people stop talking about RATM like they are just another pawn in the music industry (like Joe is), they are not in music to get to the top of the charts, to get 'big breaks', to make money. If people want to oppose RATM that is fine, BUT AT LEAST KNOW WHAT YOU ARE f***ING TALKING ABOUT BECAUSE IT IS f***ING FRUSTRATING WHEN YOU KNOW f*** ALL ABOUT RAGE AND SPEAK ABOUT THEM LIKE THEY ARE JLS. Calm down, all I did was state my opinion. And I know exactly what I am talking about, thank you very much. For the record I didnt "label RATM as 'AWFUL' just because it is opposing a song I like and because it isnt a pop song", do you know my music taste? No. Who said I only like pop music? Because I certainly didn't. It just pisses off how people automatically get looked down and get branded as "Cowell bummers" on here if they like an X Factor related song. Its like people expect you to be against it. This is a forum at the end of the day, you can't tell people their opinons are wrong. EDIT: Also, people are saying downloading RATM is good because its going to Shelter? Yet when theres an X Factor single for charity, it gets looked down on? Yeah, okay. December 16, 200915 yr ^ Wasn't a percentage of XFF's "You are not alone" sales going to Simon's pocket? Oh yeah and royalties?
December 16, 200915 yr ^ Wasn't a percentage of XFF's "You are not alone" sales going to Simon's pocket? Oh yeah and royalties? Well, just like for the RATM single. Part of the money is going directly into Sony's pocket.

December 16, 200915 yr I feel sad for Joe :( He has done his best for weeks and now some inhuman and unfair campaign could keep him away from the top spot :( Shouldn't the OCC disqualify the RATM track?
December 16, 200915 yr I feel sad for Joe :( He has done his best for weeks and now some inhuman and unfair campaign could keep him away from the top spot :( Shouldn't the OCC disqualify the RATM track? Why? If they disqualify RATM they should also disqualify Joe because of the four month advertising campaign.
December 16, 200915 yr Why? If they disqualify RATM they should also disqualify Joe because of the four month advertising campaign. We all know there is no comparaison at all between both. RATM at the top is the direct result of a Facebook campaign to get a song at the top. This is clearly in contradiction with the rules of the OCC. It's main aim is precisely to disturb the Xmas charts, and it's stated this way.
