a record company is there to promote the artists on its books.

But surely that's not the reason why people are buying it though.....

And RATM haven't been on Fony's "books" as such for a long time now, RATM haven't released an album in about 10 years..... So, this has nothing to do with Fony wanting to "promote" them... They just want to "cash in" in anyway they can, probably because RATM have been preventing Fony from cashing in by releasing a "Best Of.." compilation album, so, I guess a re-release of one of their most famous songs is the next best thing.....

If RATM are really above Epic/Sony in terms of their personal rights, like you have stated in this thread, surely they would of got RATM's permission first.

Either, RATM have the rights to veto a compilation, but not an individual song...

OR, RATM were just suckered into believing this was a real Grass Roots thing and not a means to an end for Fony to dominate the X-Mas charts and increase their market share....

All this publicity is probably doing WONDERS for Fony Corp shares on the Stock Market.. I mean, has no one actually thought about THAT....?? -_-

what is your point, all record companies are out to make money and up their profiles with any stunt possible, are you against that and don't own a major label funded cd then?

what is your point,

My POINT is (for about the umpteenth fukkin' time...) is that this is being dressed up as "the rebellion of the masses" when it blatantly fukkin' well ISN'T..... How can it be when the "opposing camps" are basically flying the same (Sony) flag.....?

I think the only real "opposition" here is the bloody MUPPETS tbh, because at least this has nothing to do with Fony Corp or their machinations.....

Right, I don't post here often but I feel I have to say something here. I'm sick of hearing that this is some sort of Sony-orchestrated campaign, I've never heard such rubbish. I think you're being the cynical one here (in the words of Mr. Cowell). Yes, they are on the Sony label, so what? The song was chosen for the reasons it was (and I'll go over them if you want) regardless of what label the act is signed to. It is the complete antithesis of everything the X Factor stands for, why would Sony risk losing the Xmas number one spot and therefore a tonne of credibility for someone who needs that slot and will doubtless make them a lot more cash in the future than RATM will, and in the process highlighting and giving a voice to the hundreds of thousands of people who clearly detest the X Factor and everything that goes with it? Do you think they like their brand new, fresh off the factory line jewel in their crown being potentially (and hopefully) beaten to the Xmas no. 1 spot he should've been a shoe-in for by a song from 1992 that only peaked at 25 originally and has absolutely nowhere near the mass market appeal that Joe has?

who said it was the rebellion of the masses, most of the people that i know that have downloaded it think it will be funny to see the x factor song not get the xmas #1. i haven't downloaded either song cus i don't like them and i try and support small label/indie artists, but you are missing the point. 99% of people who have downloaded it have done to prevent x factors monopoly on the xmas #1, it aint some movement to get away from major label acts and artists, it is to stop a t.v show producing the xmas #1 single year after year.

why would Sony risk losing the Xmas number one spot and therefore a tonne of credibility for someone who needs that slot and will doubtless make them a lot more cash in the future than RATM will,

Because that aint the way it's gonna pan out, RATM will obviously be No2.... The thought of RATM winning will get the "Joe" fans who may have been dithering over whether to buy it or not out in the shops buying the X-Factor song like it's going out of fashion.... Yes, hundreds of thousands HATE IT, unfortunately X-Factor has 18 million brainless sheep watching it every week, do you honestly think RATM can win....? Come on the numbers dont even come close to comparing.... Fony have orchestrated a genius campaign that it cant possibly fail to win.... On one level you really have to admire the sheer gall of it....

Oh, and the huge boost to Fony's share dividends from all this lovely publicity it's getting will give it's shareholders multiple orgasms..... A nice Christmas bonus for the Investors.... Trebles all round....

The only thing that can scupper all this is if both songs are declared ineligible due to manipulation of the charts.... Which, frankly, I kind would love to see happen....

That would be the "rebellion" factor..... Jesus, I really dont see the point in debating with you tbh if you cant actually get that simple point.....

Rebellion is a refusal of obedience or order - no one is being ordered to buy the x factor single, your use of the word is laughable.

I find this whole thing hilarious! It reaks of hypocrisy!

I will just say, i don't really care who goes to No.1 next week, but I really think these people following the 'cause' need to take a step back and tone down the defensive abit. Especially when some people have valid points to make against this whole charde!

has absolutely nowhere near the mass market appeal that Joe has?

I'm sick of the argument too - but I take issue with this. If Joe Mc had released this song in 1992 the same week as RATM...WITHOUT having won a competition i.e. if the two tracks were released by Sony and left to sell on their own merit then I doubt 'The Climb' would have sold particularly well at all. I think both Joe and his label would have been ecstatic with a #25 for a debut single...in 1992.

On another note, I guess I'm in a bit of a minority here in that I heard KITN before it was released, in the same way I heard Smells Like Teen Spirit before it was released (thanks Mark Goodybags' Evening Sesh) - but there is no doubt that both tunes continue to strike a chord with alternative-minded folks...including those younger than the songs themselves. For some kids these tracks are an Anarchy in the UK, a This Charming Man or, if you like, a Bohemian Rhapsody or Dancing Queen. For that reason, I guess the choice of song is justified.

Personally this video is far more appropriate:

 now id get behind that being xmas #1.

Wow, ouch. :kink:

TBH, as much as people try to deny it, Journey's is a pretty unknown song in this country. I've heard it played twice in clubs, but that was only since X Factor. I recognise it, not from X Factor, but from Family Guy - which is of course American, where the song is well known.

You've never been to Embrace on a Wednesday then... I became a fan of the song from hearing it out so much!

Don't Stop Believin' is also one of the all-time most downloaded songs. It's always hanging

around the download chart. Impressive for a song that missed the Top 40 first time round.
