Surprisingly, 2 Become 1 was originally scheduled for released on 9th December '96 (a week earlier than Christmas week), but was delayed due to the release of charity single Dunblane - Knockin' on Heaven's Door. This change in schedule was not due to fears of the Spice Girls not reaching #1, but more as an act of goodwill so the charity single could have its time at #1. This might have seemed over-confident, but huge pre-order figures of 2 Become 1 showed the Spice Girls were an absolute dead cert to reach #1.

Eventually released on 16th December, the Spice Girls claimed the Christmas #1 with staggering first week sales of 429,000 copies. It would sell a further 300,000 copies in the final week of 1996. 729,000 sales in a fortnight was enough for the single to be the 5th best selling single of 1996 - joining Say You'll Be There (4th) and Wannabe (2nd) in the Top 5 best sellers of the year. 2 Become 1 spent one final week at #1 in the first week of 1997 with 95,000 sold. In total, 2 Become 1 ended up selling over a million copies, and is within the Top 100 best selling singles of all time.

Too Much faced stiff competition from 4 colourful children's characters - the Teletubbies! Just four years previously, Take That had been denied a Christmas #1 at the (inflatable) hands of Mr Blobby, and many thought the Spice Girls would suffer a similar fate. This was not to be, with the Spice Girls racing to #1 with 252,000 copies. Not only was it their second Christmas #1 single, but their 6th #1 single overall - a record breaking feat for the group. Too Much would spend a further week at #1, holding up impressively with 218,000 copies, but after this the single freefell down the charts. Overall, Too Much sold around 660,000 copies.

Just like with Too Much, the single Goodbye was released up against another non-human act, this time South Park character Chef. Spice Girls ended up the victors yet again, however this was one of the closest battles the Spice Girls had ever faced for #1. Selling 380,000 copies, Goodbye outsold Chocolate Salty Balls by just 30,000 copies - not a particularly significant margin in those times. Goodbye only spent one week at #1, swapping places with Chef the week after, but sold enough in week 2 to become the 8th biggest selling single of 1998. To date Goodbye has sold nearly 860,000 copies.

Three Christmas #1s in a row marked the first time an act had achieved this since The Beatles back in the 1960s. Unfortunately Geri Halliwell was no longer in the group to enjoy this very notable achievement, having left the Spice Girls six months previously.

In 1999 there was no Spice Girls single released in an attempt to achieve a 4th Christmas #1. The girls were included on a Various Artists charity single 'It's Only Rock 'n' Roll', and this was released with the aim of it being in contention for the Christmas #1 spot, but it fell well short at #19.
