Gabriella Cilmi song is the 'most played in the UK'

Gabriella Cilmi's Sweet About Me was the most played song in the UK this year, according to the body that collects royalties for songwriters.

The song was a number six hit last year for the Australian singer.

Coldplay's Viva La Vida came second in the list, while Take That had two hits in the top 10 - Shine at number five and Greatest Day at number nine.

PRS for Music compiled a top 100 based on the number of times a songs was used on radio, TV, online or in concert.

Eight of the top 10 were released in 2008.

Moloko's 2000 single The Time Is Now, played frequently on Sky Sports, was third on the list, followed by Duffy's Mercy and Take That's 2007 song Shine, which currently soundtracks a supermarket advert.

Girls Aloud's The Promise - named best British single at this year's Brit Awards - was number six while No Air, by American Idol winner Jordin Sparks featuring Chris Brown, was the seventh most-played.

The Man Who Can't Be Moved, a number two hit in the UK for Irish band The Script, was at number eight followed by The Greatest Day.

The top 10 was rounded out by US singer Jennifer Hudson's song Spotlight.

Take That, Sugababes and Rihanna each had four entries in the top 100.

But there was no place for Michael Jackson despite a surge in the popularity of his hits after his death in June.

So the full top ten

Does it count when you play cd's in your car? If I went off what was played on my iTunes library ... I can safely say I've listened to nothing more than twice.

This has me perplexed. Does the Moloko figure actually count the plays on Sky Sports or is this just radio? I wonder how much it has sold on download.

Also, why is the list so heavy on 2008 hits? No woder the music industry is in turmoil when no one knows there's new product available? Chasing Cars can't have been far down the 100, I predict.

I can undertand play-lists having 2008 hits for the first two months maybe but they shoudn't dominate the whole year.

^^

Itunes counts it for you

It doesn't work on my iPod touch(2nd generation). The plays are not recorded correctly... :(
