Posted December 27, 200915 yr What a year for GaGa! She sets a new record this year for the most weeks EVER on the singles chart in a calendar year. Rihanna came close to this last year thanks to her Re-reloading of her album and the older singles still hanging around, but only managed 129 weeks, 5 short of the 134 record until now held by Oasis, following a series of physical re-releases of old singles in their 90s heyday. GaGa has managed a WHOPPING 150 WEEKS this year, and has been helped by a deluxe re-release herself, a smattering of album cherrypicks, and a guest starring role. Still charting 3 singles at the moment and with another on the way 2010 should also continue to be a bumper year for her. Here's the full list with runs for those who are interested: 10/01/2009 Lady GaGa Featuring Colby O'Donis Just Dance 1 3-{1}-1-1-2-2-2-2-6-8-11-12-13-13-15-18-19-22-24-25-32-35-41-46-45-51-51-46-44-46-48-50-55-62-67-74-75R(3)->37 weeks 24/01/2009 Lady GaGa Poker Face 1 30-26-28-24-22-15-3-3-4-{1}-1-1-2-3-4-5-5-6-9-11-12-14-20-24-31-26-24-22-24-31-34-38-41-41-45-51-52-58-54-60-67-60-63-66-70-74-56R(2)-69->48 weeks 09/05/2009 Lady GaGa Paparazzi 4 61-58-57-65-64-43-13-8-{4}-5-4-5-8-8-9-13-18-18-26-30-31-34-42-37-47-50-56-61-68-66R(2)-71-61-74->33 weeks 22/08/2009 Lady GaGa LoveGame 19 64-33-27-31-29-25-{19}-22-28-45-52-62-68-71->14 weeks 12/09/2009 Wale Featuring Lady GaGa Chillin 12 {12}-21-28-49-69->5 weeks 07/11/2009 Lady GaGa Bad Romance 1 14-10-11-8-5-3-{1}-3->8 weeks 05/12/2009 Lady GaGa Monster 68 {68}->1 week 05/12/2009 Lady GaGa Telephone 30 {30}-41-62->3 weeks 05/12/2009 Lady GaGa Alejandro 75 {75}->1 week TOTAL 150 WEEKS With thanks to Polyhex for saving my fingers!
December 27, 200915 yr I can see this being broken at some point. It's obviously getting more prevailent.
December 27, 200915 yr Author it could be. If someone new can have as big an impact and keep their release rate up. There's no constraint anymore by physical limitation and with download chartruns stretching longer than the old physicals as a result plus the inclusion of album cherrypicks in the chart, it is becoming more and more likely. Good for her though. She is the hit of the year in my book. :)
December 27, 200915 yr I think that may be hard to top unless a huge act starts their album campaign in January like Gaga did.
December 27, 200915 yr Lol, I totally already worked this out on another thread not that long ago :P Beyoncé is not far behind at 2nd
December 27, 200915 yr The Record has been broken because 'Singles' no longer need to actually be on Sale in Shops in order to Chart. You can therefore Chart indefinitely - with Downloads - if you are popular enough. You can even Chart with Album Tracks. Those things have caused Lady GaGa to break the record. Just as if Downloads had been around in The Beatles time, & ABBA's, & Queen's, etc. - then those Acts would have spent far longer, (than they did), on the Singles Chart, in a Calendar Year. It's like the hype about Steps, Westlife, & Take That, all having, 'The UK's Biggest Stadium Tour', Record, at some stage. They could gain such feats because the Stadiums are around. There were no such UK Stadium Tours, in The Beatles, ABBA's, & Queen's 'Day', - but, those Acts would have held/broken those Tour records too, had there been - and had they decided to 'go for it'. So - like many Chart Records - the 'Most Singles Weeks In A Calendar Year', one, is now far easier to gain/break - due to the way things are in this day & age. Nothing to do with 2000's Acts actually being 'Bigger' than older Decades Acts - to be honest.....
December 27, 200915 yr Lady Gaga's chart dominance this year is very reminiscent of Madonna when she started out, she had countless singles (7 I think) in the chart during 1985.
December 27, 200915 yr lady gaga must have had the most succsessful debut 12 months than any other artist ever
December 27, 200915 yr On a worldwide scale she probably has had the biggest debut year of the 00s anyway.
December 27, 200915 yr Lady Gaga's chart dominance this year is very reminiscent of Madonna when she started out, she had countless singles (7 I think) in the chart during 1985. More proof she is the new Madonna
December 27, 200915 yr Madonna had Material girl, crazy for you, into the groove, angel, gambler, dress you up and like a virgin in the chart in 1985 and were ALL top 5 singles!. Well done lady Gaga!.
December 27, 200915 yr Madonna had Material girl, crazy for you, into the groove, angel, gambler, dress you up and like a virgin in the chart in 1985 and were ALL top 5 singles!. Well done lady Gaga!. plus a re-issue of 'Holiday' which reached #2, behind her own 'Into The Groove' - 85 weeks on chart that year (i think)
December 28, 200915 yr Author Lol, I totally already worked this out on another thread not that long ago :P Beyoncé is not far behind at 2nd Yes I've looked at hers too as she's charted loads of songs but quite a way off actually I love that both their next singles feature each other, they are the dream team of the moment! I take your point Zeus which I've kind of implied in my original post but equally GaGa isn't reissuing her entire back catalogue to set this record unlike oasis did. Ultimately its supply and demand- even physicals stayed available when the song was selling well still. The chart has really changed so comparison is difficult. Still think its a great achievement though :-)
December 28, 200915 yr By the way it's up to 155 weeks with this weeks chart, 156 if Video Phone is included.
December 28, 200915 yr By the way it's up to 155 weeks with this weeks chart, 156 if Video Phone is included. 156 weeks top 75 in a single year, that is INSANE. The OCC haven't yet updated last week's top 100, presumably because it is Christmas time, but including Chillin and Video Phone, here is the full dealio with top 100 weeks: Alejandro 75-x [1wk] Bad Romance 14-10-11-8-5-3-1-3-3- [9wks] Beautiful, Dirty, Rich 89-x(5)-83-87-x [3wks] Chillin 12-21-28-49-69-83-x [6wks] Dance In The Dark 89-x [1wk] Just Dance 3-1-1-1-2-2-2-2-6-8-11-12-13-13-15-18-19-22-24-25-32-35-41-46-45-51-51-46-44-46-48-50-55-62-67-74-78-89-75-87-89-x(8)-79-90-67- [44wks] LoveGame 93-93-x(1)-96-89-90-x(6)-99-x(7)-64-33-27-31-29-25-19-22-28-45-52-62-68-71-98-x [21wks]* Monster 68-x Paparazzi 99-95-x(11)-87-61-58-57-65-64-43-13-8-4-5-4-5-8-8-9-13-18-18-26-30-31-34-42-37-47-50-56-61-68-81-66-71-61-74-61- [38wks] Poker Face 30-26-28-24-22-15-3-3-4-1-1-1-2-3-4-5-5-6-9-11-12-14-20-24-31-26-24-22-24-31-34-38-41-41-45-51-52-58-54-60-67-60-63-66-70-74-79-56-69-51- [50wks] So Happy I Could Die 84-x [1wk] Speechless 88-x [1wk]* Telephone 30-41-62-82-74- [5wks] Video Phone 91-x(1)-63- [2wks] That's 186 weeks, an average of just over 3.5 songs in the top 100 every week. *these 2 songs might have racked up an extra week, but I can't tell yet due to OCC not updating. December 28, 200915 yr I can see this being broken by someone huge like Madonna again. Whoever it is will need three huge hits that will do 40+ weeks in the chart plus several guest vocals and severla album tracks. Maybe Nelly Furtado's next big album, possibly Justin Timberlake.
December 28, 200915 yr Author By the way it's up to 155 weeks with this weeks chart, 156 if Video Phone is included. Video Phone is, far as i'm aware. Just found this out too, thanks to us getting a week 53 this year amazing! 150 has a nicer ring to it though, and getting 53 weeks to do it is kind of lucky/a cheat so maybe we should call it "150+6" weeks. Thanks for posting the top 100 also, though its kind of irrelevant to the record :P
December 26, 201113 yr Author Just a quick bump for this previous discussion (see Rihanna thread) ;-)
