June 2, 201015 yr Sorry folks, but UK send songs that even people in UK won't buy. When was the last UK Eurovision song a number 1? IF you look at the songs who won in the last years, they started with a big buzz in their own country. Why you expect that the european are so idiot to vote and buy something that even you don't like? Second: people across Europe are very aware that UK has a lot of good artists and songs. So they are feeling cheated with what UK sends  .

Gina G in 1996, not that it did her any favours, she ended up 8th :drama: I agree with you though, but it's not like we even had a choice of songs this year, we had to pick a singer for this godawful mess of a track, and Josh was the best of a very awful bunch.

Yes but to be fair the Aussie was Ooh Aah just a little bit out of key on the night. AMOgwaaQofI
June 2, 201015 yr Poor Gina  I maintain though that shouty Alexander and mockney Lena were miles away from vocal perfection, but still managed to run off with the prize quite easily. Question for somebody. Have juries always voted before the contest based on a dress rehearsal because if so Gina must have been consistently poor :o Anyway, Sweden's One More Time should have won in 1996, they were vocally perfect and their song was a lot more interesting than Ireland's (still great) entry. These songs all made up my 1996 top 3 anyway, my favourite contest of the 90's by a mile, followed distantly by 1999.
June 2, 201015 yr Have juries always voted before the contest based on a dress rehearsal because if so Gina must have been consistently poor :o I was wondering about that as well. It would be strange if the juries always voted based on a rehearsal, because then in the 100% jury years, the actual live performance wouldn't really matter, as the juries would already have voted.
June 2, 201015 yr Dunno if this has been posted, but it's not just Pete going at it http://www.mikestockmusic.com/news.php?pag...ion=sectionNews Good luck to Germany and Lena, but please don't expect me to say it's a good song.He does speak a bit of sense though: It was a hit record before the competition and fully supported by the German media. The BBC would not and could not support us to that extent. If the UK still wants to do it next year it has to change its approach.
June 2, 201015 yr Here is what Mike Stock had to say.... He does make a couple of good points, I understand his frustration about the BBC not supporting their entry whatsoever. However it's completely negated by some of the other points he makes and how incredibly out of touch he and Pete Waterman are... EDIT: Damn! One minute too late!! Took me so long to post it  Edited June 2, 201015 yr by Peter30
June 2, 201015 yr A long way to go to come last. Still, I'm completely happy with the integrity of our UK effort this year. I also understand why we came bottom of the heap. We all know why Germany won, and it's not just because of political or partisan voting. The 'just' is slightly telling. Although there is definitely an East / West split in Eurovision. It has become a competition between the Viking alliance and the Baltic confederation. Germany straddles this divide quite nicely, but it still wasn't the main reason for their win. Fair enough that he states that it wasn't the main reason for their win, but is it seriously a competition between two blocs of three and five countries respectively, which can only award a maximum of 24/36 or 48/60 points (depending on who the recipient is)? Also a fairly bizarre comment given that no Baltic country has won since 2002, and, er, none of them qualified this year. Oh well. All the songs in the competition that Pete Waterman and I liked came nowhere. What's wrong with our ears? At least the Irish girl had a lovely voice and a moving song. The Portugese girl also sang a nice musical and lyrical number. Both big ballads of course. But they did badly in the voting.Yeah, this does really show how dated they are. I absolutely do not accept that our song was the worst in the competition. Pete and I thought we'd be lucky to finish mid-table and we knew we couldn't win it. Finishing last was down to voting patterns of a partisan nature. I hold my head up and state that our song was one of only a few which was an honest attempt at a new pop song with a new artist. There were no tricks and we didn't resort to Eurotrash. Wait, hang on? We finished last due to partisan votes? Uh, no. We finished last as we sent a dated (I find it hilarious he think it's a new pop song, given it's basically Kids In America made $h!t mixed with a Scooch track from 2000) track which was wholly unmemorable. He does indeed negate his points entirely here. - Yeah, I agree that it's nice he at least concedes that Germany won on its own merits. But he's still incredibly deluded and dated...
June 2, 201015 yr Who cares if 'Me And My Guitar' sounds like 'Walking In Memphis'? It's a great song, imo, and that's all the matters to me. I would agree that the UK was not the worst song out of the 25 - I even had it listed 15th in my faves list but that again was down to personal preference. The lower tracks were either really horrendous, performed terribly or just far too MOR for their own good. I predicted the UK would come last and they did. Why? Maybe IrisAlbastru has a point. We know that the UK produces artists that are really successful across Europe. Next year we should send Amy Macdonald. :w00t: She's far more popular in Europe than in the UK so I doubt Amy would be that bothered about her home country fortunes. Look at how well her second album has done across Europe.

Look at how well her second album has done across Europe. Especially impressive considering how utterly forgettable it is (in my opinion). Something like This Is The Life or Barrowland Ballroom from her first album would make a good entry for us in my opinion. Jaunty and upbeat, contemporary yet still with an obvious appeal to an older audience. If they wanted to enlist Amy for a slow MOR moment like Run, they can forget it :P
June 2, 201015 yr Something like This Is The Life AMAZING song. I hadn't heard it until I was in Paris in January 2009 and I fell in love with it. Perfect winter song for me. She'd win the contest if she had a song as strong as This Is The Life. The UK would get my vote. :kink:
June 2, 201015 yr We need to send Melanie C. It's not like she's got much else going on when she isn't grinding muff, really, is it?
June 2, 201015 yr The UK would get my vote. :kink: The UK should get your vote anyway, we're neighbors :P

June 3, 201015 yr Lily Allen is the best choice for the UK next year. Her 'voice' is different, she has international appeal and she's a superb lyricist. Edited June 3, 201015 yr by Tactical
June 3, 201015 yr Lily Allen is the best choice for the UK next year. Her 'voice' is different, she has international appeal and she's a superb lyricist. Agreed. Lily next year but please not that Morrissey. His miserable drone would have half of Europe committing suicide. :naughty:
June 3, 201015 yr If we send Lily Allen in 2011, the rest of Europe would end up thinking we've sent Lily purely because of Lena's win this year. Preferably, we should send an act in 2011 that's nothing like Lena Meyer-Landrut. People move on and go about finding the next best thing. We get Pete Waterman involved and he's writes "the next big pop hit". Sadly it came 22 years too late.
June 3, 201015 yr I doubt people will start copying Lena at all, nobody copied Maria Serifovic, Dima Bilan, Alexander Rybak or Ruslana after all :heehee:
