I forgot all about O Zone  That's a great example of a foreign language track being a massive UK hit - although it had silly lyrics like "mai a hee, mai a hoo, mai a haa, mai a ha haa" which is what made it appeal to most people I knew at the time.

Yeah Dragostea Din Tei was top ten here for aaaaages too! I can't imagine it had any Radio 1 support either

But it definitely had that universal hook which was almost more nonsense language than a particular language. Still the 'Alors On Danse' hook is just as effective I think.

'Alors On Danse' has a 2010 sound about it.

Other big foreign language hits I can think of are 'Joe Le Taxi' by Vanessa Paradis and 'Voyage Voyage' by Desireless. Both made the UK top 10 in 1988. It'd be excellent to see Stromae join the elusive list of big non-English hits in the UK. :D

Still loving this, like gooddelta said, it could be big here through word of mouth. The best example of foreign language songs last decade was O-Zone and that went top 3! I remember The Box playing that too death as well, it was #1 on Box tops for a while (oh how i used to love box top!). The box really did help make the hits back then.

The Box was the reason why there were a lot of songs managed to be hits with no radio support. Especially european songs, or the cheesy dance tunes songs from the likes of Flip & Fill, Scooter, Kelly Llorenna, Special D, etc.

6 weeks since I first heard it and this continues to grow on me  Ridiculously infectious. I'm loving the dance songs doing well on the continent at the moment (or rather six months ago in the case of those finally making it to the UK now).

I'm starting to love this one now:

It sounds amazing out loud, so ethereal and chilling. Released last summer in Romania, only now catching on in Holland.

Anyway Stromae is also climbing airplay charts in Eastern Europe:

Czech Republic

#20 (87)

Slovakia

#54 (debut)

Russia

#27 (36)

Unfortunately Romania hasn't updated theirs since early March. For me that's terrible since they lead the way in european dance since last year.

Stromae is starting to take the whole of Europe by storm. Norway, Sweden and Finland next please. Followed by the inevitable "six months after everybody else" release in the UK sometime in September.
They need to translate it into English first and re-shoot the video with some 'hot girls' and cars :P
And maybe feature a famous UK rap star :P

I can see it now - 'Stromae feat Tinie Tempah - Then We Dance (Innit Tho)' signed to AATW/3Beat naturally who I'm sure are already gearing up for a January 2011 release :funky:

Haha. :D

Anyways, I mentioned on the previous page that Alors On Danse has started getting airplay in Canada (mainly Quebec). Well it's just charted at #89!! I'm quite excited to see how it gains popularity in Canada. Hopefully it'll be a major hit there, like it has been in most other countries that it's charted in. But this is quite an achievement. A lot of English-speaking people might start hearing the song now.

But I think there's high demand for the song to get translated into English. If you type in "alors on danse" into google, 6 of the top 10 suggested searches are to do with the song being translated.

Also, some people may find this interesting:

Tunisia? What the hell?

Yeah, I was a bit surprised by that...

And English has gone down from #9 to #10 since I last checked. :(

Tunisia isn't really a surprise because most people there can speak French. It is a bit random alright. :heehee:

I'd love for it to be released here as I think it could do very well. I know Kate Ryan's version of Ella, Elle l'a got some good airplay here a few years ago, so there's still hope yet! :P

Heard this in November when the Video came out, most played on my Last FM since! Listen to 'Up Saw Liz' - Stromae, I find it so addictive, and he says the lyrics 'Up saw liz' is garbage! A la, O-Zone?
