I don't mind Stella but it's as if shes thrown into every scene offering people a chat in the back.

This really. I don't dislike her as a character, she's inoffensive and Michelle is a good actress and all but she's sort of omnipresent, always just 'there' though and never really does anything major.

Michelle is a good actress - she's proven it in other outings. I do think though that she can't give her best in Corrie because she's restricted by that stupid accent they've insisted on her having. Her accent in Corrie is less convincing than Jayne Leeve's attempt at a Manchester accent in Frasier.

I think they have to have Stella in a storyline of her own rather than as an 'add-on' to other people's storylines - which she came across as even in the Sunita/Karl/Stella scenario.

Kath

Stella is a strong charactor, and should get a stand alone storyline for herself. I would whole heartidly agree thta the Sunita as a sex siren didnt work, far too contrived and not in line with the traits of her charactor at all. Ken Barlow is a horrific actor, same expressions used for every occasion, Deirdre isnt as bad, Tracey is completly over acted, Dev has nothing at all likewise. In contrast Izzy has delivered some fantastic scences and is very underated.

All the soaps have people who use them as stop gaps as they believe they are better than their respective shows which never works out to be true. Every now and again people carve a career after a soap but from the British Soaps its the ones from EastEnders who usually are the ones to do it.

Totally crap! Sorry Pippa - totally untrue. Nearly everyone who left EE thinking they could do better (sustainably) went crawling back.

The soap whose actors who have gone on to consistently bigger and better things is by far Brookside, followed (quite a long way behind) by Coronation Street.

I am so bored with Izzy and Gary (and I really liked Gary when he first appeared in the soap).

I still love David and Kylie though.

Kath

I love it when Kath gets her panties twisted. :D

Its true though. I've been doing a bit of catch up on the Brookside cast - and 'post-soap' it has a far higher ratio of success (in bloody good dramas and films) than any other soap.

Yes, some from Brookside have done extremely well but i didnt count that as the soap no longer runs. The girl who played Karen McDonald in Coronation Street has done quiet well for herself (just cant remember her real name) but who else from Coronation Street has? I also refer to careers as they leave, any of the pop careers from Corrie have failed (Adam Rickitt, the girl who played Candice, and there was a guy who used to be a mechanic, but the pop careers faded as did the girl who played Maxine Peacock. In comparison, Michelle Gayle and Martine McCutcheon did have good pop fortunes, although granted it did fade.

I do agree not many have had mega careers or anything, but i just cant place any former Coronation Street stars outside the above mentioned on tv etc, that said i could be very wrong, but i would be interested if anyone has further information.

Lee Boardman (Jez Quigley) – the very highly rated (and Golden Globe nominated) ‘Rome’ – playing one of the lead characters Timon. Was regular in the brilliant BBC 3 show‘Drop Dead Gorgeous’ playing the gay model agency manager Murray Priestman. Starring in Jack The Giantkiller with Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci, Ian McShane, Bill Nighy and others.

Sarah Lancashire (Raquel) – Lead roles (not just one-off appearances) in - Clocking Off, Where the Heart Is, Seeing Red (very highly rated TV movie on the life of the actress Coral Atkins), Chambers, The Glass, The Rotter’s Club, Rose & Maloney, All The Small Things, Larkrise to Candleford and Upstairs Downstairs.

Joanna Lumley (Elaine Perkins) – Too many TV and film credits to mention (although I think Absolutely Fabulous is possibly her finest hour).

Denise Welch (Natalie Barnes) – lead roles in - Holby City, Waterloo Road, Down To Earth, Where the Heart Is, Benidorm. And Loose Women – but I think she can be forgiven for that.

Joanne Froggatt (Zoe Tattersall) – lead roles in - Bad Girls, Paradise Heights, Island At War, Life on Mars, Robin Hood, Spooks, Murder in the Outback (TV film), See No Evil – the Moors Murderers (TV film). Oh and she’s in a little known drama at the moment – Downton Abbey.

Angela Griffin (Fiona Middleton) – lead roles in - Cutting It, Holby City, Waking The Dead, Babyfather, Waterloo Road, Mount Pleasant

Rob James Collier (Liam Connor) – lead roles in - Mercenaries, Moving On, Love Life, Downton Abbey

Amelia Bullmore (Steph Barnes) – lead roles in - Brass Eye, Big Train, Shameless, I’m Alan Partridge, Ashes To Ashes, Scott & Bailey, 2012 (this actress has done LOADS of noteworthy work since being a regular on Corrie).

And I almost forgot - the late Geoffrey Hughes (Eddie Yeats) - who went on to play in successful comedies The Royle Family and Keeping Up Appearances not to mention a main role in Heartbeat.

These are just a few of the actors that came to mind – there are others. This isn’t even including people like Patrick Stewart (who made one appearance as a fireman) and Oscar winner Ben Kingsley who was in a few episodes early in his career.

Apart from one or two exceptions from Eastenders (Ross Kemp, Michelle Collins – who have both done SUSTAINABLY good work since) I think Corrie eclipses it as far as going on to bigger things.

Kylie was amazing on the switch the other night! It's little things like this that make Corrie so much better than EastEnders for me!

Kylie and Mary are my two favourite characters at the moment - effortlessly coming out with funny lines without it ever sounding forced - and where other other soaps would go at ham-fisted and heavy. There are of course one or two pretty bad actors/actresses in it too of course (Jimi Harkishan stands out like a sore thumb - even though I don't altogether dislike the character of Dev. I'm not too impressed by Shobna too - the actress who plays Sunita - and I do think she's been given some stuff that is just out of her reach as an actress). However you can't have a show where EVERYONE stands out as excellent.

Some shows do have more bad actors than good ones - but Coronation Street certainly isn't one of them.

Kylie and Mary are indeed standouts and continue to deliver hilarious line, it surprises though how much Mary is disliked in many other forums.

Yep Mary is great too especially her new storyline with Roy and their chess games! And I hope the Kylie/Gail relationship is explored again soon - always hilarious!

My favourite characters at the moment are Kylie and Eva (who is also had some comedy storylines recently) and I'm glad Steve and Michelle are reuniting it seems!

I think the past couple of weeks Jimi Harkishan has done really well ^_^

I can't warm to Michelle me  shes just there, I'm not too fond of Kym Marsh in general I don't think. They need to explore her character's memory loss more, as shes forgotten Steven cheated on her with Becky & that she has another son whose actually hers.

I'm still not convinced. I do like Dev when he's got funny things to say but I can't take him seriously when he's playing the dejected cuckold. He plays his scenes in a way that makes me feel very, very sorry for him - and I want to give him a big hug and say 'you're too good for the little trollop' but I still find his acting very, very lacking

I agree totally. I do think she acts out some scenes quite well (in fact - for someone who went into this with NO acting experience whatsoever - Kym Marsh does a very good job) but like you - I just can't warm to her character.

Kath

I only dip in casually now and then but for me Michelle is one of the few truly likable characters. I don't like Kym Marsh as a media personality but she does a pretty good job on Corrie.

I can't STAND Kym Marsh and that comes across in Michelle as well. Idk, she's not an awful actress (certainly a lot better than her lack of experience suggests, as Kath says) but I just want to slap her in the face. She's been way too overused in the past as well, not so much lately although with Ryan back it's creeping in again.

I do think that (in the past) she's been given too many major storylines. I like her as a background player - occasionally coming forward with a wicked one-liner (which she can do very well).

For me though - the best females (and the females - as ever - do rule the roost in Corrie) are Kylie, Mary and Eva. I also like Katie (call me shallow - but how did a pretty girl like that ever get together with garden-gnome Chesney?) Oddly enough I also like Tracey - even though Kate Ford is a pretty bad actress - she can be funny - especially when given a good partnership which she seems to have with the blond one who she shared the house with. I'm also waiting for Gail to have some funny lines again - I have Gail withdrawal symptoms when she's away from the screen too long.

I agree I love her!

You always know when Gail is going to have some 'angry' lines ... she has a polo-neck sweater on! No-one does polo-neck sweater as good as Gail!!!!!
