Posted February 10, 201015 yr I felt really cheated tonight! A whole two hours and only two murders! Norma
February 11, 201015 yr i like the set, the characters (wasnt 'lord percy' great?) etc but the plotline had more holes thenb an eastenders script. how this programme has more viewers then the solid morse is beyond me. i wanted a quaint english cops show to replace morse..... but this utterly fails. i mean, how tf could that bint get into a ghost train with a fekking SWORD? how tf did she know beforehand that that bloke would go on a ghost train? and be alone? just how did she lift the stone lid on the sarcophagus to get the rope underneath? how did she get the block n tackle up? and into the church? what church has cctv (rural setting)? the list goes on.
February 11, 201015 yr TBH I'll only watch this if there's nothing else on worth watching. There was last night so gave MM a miss. I can take it or leave it. Edited February 11, 201015 yr by Victor Meldrew

I couldn't stand Morse ... one of the most overrated shows (in my opinon of course) of all time. Beautiful scenery, soundtrack, lovely cars ... but a central performance from John Thaw (who was/is one of my favourite actors) that could put one into a coma. Much prefer it now that it is Lewis with Kevin Whateley and Lawrence Fox. I love Midsomer ... total pants but highly enjoyable and at least it isn't boring. I am however, loving the re-runs of The Sweeney! Norma
February 11, 201015 yr I used to love Midsomer (seriously). I stopped watching when they shunted new episodes around from the sunday night slot to midweek because it was a pain in the arse keeping track of it but I thought I'd watch last night's. Had to turn off after two minutes. That courtoom/public hearing/whatever scene with Richard Hillman in... my god! Awful! I probably should've stuck with it for the murders though, they're always pretty delicious.

Normally there's a body-count of at least half-a-dozen per episode. I just like John Nettles - odd really ... as I couldn't stand Bergerac! His 'cousin' is going to be carrying on the franchise isn't he? That's why we were introduced to him last night. Wonder if they'll move the location to Brighton seeing as they've killed off nearly all the population of Causton. Norma
February 11, 201015 yr I know, I heard there were only two. Disappointing indeed. There's been some classic murder methods over the years. I think I'd buy a DVD just containing every murder throughout the show's history back-to-back. :heehee: Barnaby's cousin is played by the rather dull Neil Dudgeon... http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Media/Pix/pictures/2010/2/9/1265727379397/Midsomer-Murders-Jason-Hu-001.jpg ...so I'm not sure there'll be much reason to watch in future. :(
February 11, 201015 yr I'm with Rob.. Midsomer Murders is just a really pathetic show, cant hold a candle to Morse, or indeed Lewis.... The recent series of Silent Witness however kind of tops just about anything crime or murder-related at the moment, particularly that brilliant two-parter which had a gunman stalking the halls of a university... Gripping??? HELL Yeah, had the grip of fukkin' Pit Bull that did.... Also the more classy American crime shows such as Law and Order, SVU and Criminal Minds beat Midsomer into a cocked hat as well....
February 11, 201015 yr Seems clear to me that you don't get Midsomer. It's not supposed to rival Criminal Minds (which is wonderful, I agree). It's not supposed to be sophisticated. It's just supposed to be silly, old-fashioned fun with very little sense of reality, a chance to admire pretty thatched cottages and laugh as the residents of a rosy little county inexplicably drop like flies.

I know MM can't be taken seriously at all ... it is our equivalent of the awful US Diagnosis Murder. However in its own way ... I find it more entertaining than Morse ever was. The only UK crime shows I've ever liked have been 'The Cops', early 'Cracker' episodes and then I'd have to go back to 'The Sweeney'. I guess I just don't like Morse. But with few exceptions nothing can match the Yanks when they do this kind of thing. L&O, Homicide, Hill Street Blues, The Shield, ... every one of them ... even on a bad day is better than anything the Brits can come up with. Norma

Oh, I get it.. I just dont want it..... :P "Diagnosis Murder", or the even more awful "Murder She Wrote", as terrible as THEY are, are still more hilariously entertaining than Midsomer.... If I was going to go for one of these types of shows, I'd pick one or other of these tbh.... I've got nothing against shows which have inexplicably nasty and downright odd things happening in small towns.... One of my favourite shows of all time is Twin Peaks for heavens sake.....
February 11, 201015 yr Author I hated Twin Peaks. The only good things about it were Ray Wise and that the TV series was better than the film. Norma
February 11, 201015 yr 'get it'? i thought the point of a crime drama was to depict a crime story... its holes are so bloody glaring that it makes following a story difficult. i dont like having to think 'where the f did THAT come from', 'how tf did THAT happen' or 'as if' !!! ... morse was beautifully crafted, weaving classic music in with proper english, intelligence, and twists. his dislike of privilidge and sloth in equal measures in his grumpy style was imho superb viewing.

But Midsomer Murders isn't a crime drama. At least I don't look at it that way. Its a program to wind down in front of, with a glass of wine (preferably on a Sunday night) its something to relax to. If I want to watch crime dramas I'll watch most hard-hitting shows the Americans have to offer rather than any home-grown effort. Anyway ... my original post wasn't to discuss the show ... merely to express my displeasure at the lack of murders in it this week. Norma
