Poor chap. As you say ... it must have been extreme depression .... suffered in silence instead of bleating on about it.

Very sad news indeed for his family especially.

It does seem to add further evidence that the most creative people are also the most vulnerable emotionally. :(

..... but i dont get why its posted here.. :unsure:

?????

It's the main news story on the BBC's news site so why should it not be posted here as it is a truly sad and shocking development.

The word genius is bandied about all too freely - but McQueen truly was a REAL genius.

Britain seems to breed the most daring and innovative designers - and McQueen was the male equivalent to our very own Vivienne Westwood.

A devastating loss of a remarkable talent, whose creations will never be forgotten due to the hugely iconic images he created for the likes of Bjork.... who can forget the fantastic Homogenic cover? All McQueen's work, shot by Nick Knight.

He was the man who made fashion fun and challenging again. A huge loss. RIP.

Why a creative and highly talented and successful individual should take his own life at the age of 40.

Why a creative and highly talented and successful individual should take his own life at the age of 40.

It is dreadfully sad especially as he was so young and must have been so desperately unhappy to take his own life.

You know ... having said that ... I think Rob has a point in the placing of this ... I think I should have put it in The Lounge (but I see someone else has put it there too ... perhaps posts could be moved and merged). Maybe we should actually have an obituary column/thread here as well ... the way people seem to be dropping like flies.

well atm that hasnt happened, i suspect that like a kiddy killing or abuse story the point wont be debated but replies will consist of 'oh how sad' type posts.

ill be happy if im wrong.

Very sad. I believe his mum died recently, and a close friend killed themselves two years before. He was also apparently a heavy user of drugs. It's very young though, same age as my partner in fact.

One thing though, I can't forgive him for inventing low-rider jeans.

Hmm, I'm in two minds about this tbh... On the one hand, I can see Rob's point of view about it not really being the sort of thing that we would normally deal with on this Forum, but on the other, Richard's right, it's a big news story and I think we should attempt to address the point as to why this has happened and what possible mental demons McQueen was wrestling with, which will probably become more apparent in the days to follow.....

We did have a Jacko thread on this forum after all....

I'm personally content to leave it here for now, and see what developments happen over the coming days to see if there are more detailed debating points that can come out of it...

I think Richard has started us off well though with the related point about the most creative tending to be the most emotionally fragile, one is reminded of the sad suicides of Ian Curtis and Kurt Cobain, two absolutely iconic figures in music over the past 30 years... Is there just something within the creative mindset that tends to self-destructive tendencies....?

Yeah, I think there is a debate to be had here actually...

I am shocked when I hear this news. But then it makes you think that human is so vulnerable regardless of how much talent you have.

Is there really any connection between the celebrity creative types, and suicide?

Or is it simply that we hear about these cases, whilst the majority of suicides go unreported?

This is TERRIBLE. He was an amazing designer, I really wish he could have gotten through this... his contributions to the world of fashion will be missed terribly. :(

It's his work with Bjork that made a big impression on me... here's a reminder of the creative genius of McQueen - his directorial debut for the 'Alarm Call' video...

Would Lady GaGa look as gaga minus McQueen?

and some of the stunning imagery he created.....

His Spring 22010 collection, with stunning visuals courtesy of Nick Knight - isn't this how a fashion show should be?

I definitely think there is a higher proportion of creative types who commit suicide than normal people due to them being closer to the edge, without going into too much thought I can think of the following musicians who have committed suicide:

* Johnny Ace

* Chris Acland (Lush drummer)

* Stuart Adamson (Big Country/The Skids)

* Kurt Cobain (Nirvana)

* Ian Curtis (Joy Division)

* Brad Delp (Boston)

* Nick Drake

* Tom Evans (Badfinger)

* Peter Ham (Badfinger)

* Donny Hathaway

* Paul Hester (Crowded House)

* Michael Holliday

* Michael Hutchence (INXS)

* Billy Mackenzie (The Asociates)

* Richard Manuel (The Band)

* Phil Ochs

* Robert Quine (in demand session indie guitarist)

* Del Shannon

* John Spence (Fleetwood Mac)

* Rory Storm

* Screaming Lord Sutch

* Jeff Ward (musician)

* Paul Williams (The Temptations)

* Wendy O. Williams (Plasmatics)

* Faron Young

I think rather macabrely, a lot of people are at the height of their creativity when they are depressed, and like TIP said, creative people tend to live life on the edge emotionally speaking.
