I don’t know many female guitarists apart from Joan Jett, Sheryl Crow and Chrissie Hynde and PJ Harvey.

I am sure there must be loads, I just don't seem to know that many.

Do you have any favourite female guitarists?

Which ones have made a great contribution to music over the years?

A brilliant list!

  • 2 weeks later...
the question posed was 'were there any good female guitarists' .... not 'please list female guitarists', ...

Define "good" mate, isn't that a purely subjective term anyway which means a thousand things to a thousand different people...

If you mean a whole load of fret-board W/ankery, shredding and a propensity to do extremely LOOOOOOONGGGGGG solos a'la Power Metal or Prog or summat, then, okay, maybe not many...

Frankly I would take the pretty epic, atmospheric, trippy, sonic soundscapes that Bilinda Butcher and Rachel Goswell managed to create over the rather mindless shredding of the average male Power Metal guitarist any day of the week.....

Not super retro, but:

Sleater-Kinney

My Brightest Diamond

Warpaint

Neko Case

St. Vincent

Women tend to make better bassists if you ask me. It's a much more sensual and sexy instrument

It's the vibrations......

A girl I know who plays bass just loves the sound vibrations of the bass amp, er, sort of, well, errrrr...... I'm saying no more on a "family site" like BJ, but you get the picture, yeah.......?
