The Flashback Charts...From February 1973: As a request from someone (who`s name escapes me)...Doesn`t anyone else remember 1973?

The Top TV, back then (Figures based on number of Homes, rather than Individuals)

01 THIS IS YOUR LIFE 8.90...Pat Reid (British Army Officer/Colditz prisoner/author) is Eamonn Andrews culprit

02 LOVE STORY 7.80...an ITV Anthology series dealing with various couples problems with the likes of Michael Brandon/David Doyle/Pamela Franklin/Jodie Foster

03 CILLA 7.70...Saturday night, and entertainment from Cilla Black...springing various surprise visits to someone`s house too

04 OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS 7.60...Hughie Green resides over the talent or not of contestants. 1973, saw Peters & Lee win the show

05 A MAN CALLED IRONSIDE 7.50...the BBC saw fit to change the title of "Ironside", when originally broadcasted....never knew why?

06 FATHER DEAR FATHER 7.40...the hilarious Thames TV sitcom, with Patrick Cargill as divorced Patrick Glover (writer) and the mis-adventures of his daughters and not forgetting the incredible "Nanny" played by Noel Dyson

07 CORONATION STREET (MON) 7.30...Joanna Lumley joins the cast as Elaine Perkins (Ken Barlow`s new girlfriend)

08 CORONATION STREET (WEDS) 7.10

09 THE MORECAMBE AND WISE SHOW 7.00...Eric & Ernie`s kiddishness of the BBC

10 RIVALS OF SHERLOCK HOLMES 6.90...not exactly Sherlock, it featured contempories who could have past for the man

11 CROSSROADS (MON) 6.70...finally broadcasted by the entire ITV network, after a 9 year start on ATV. Granada were releuctant to screen it, due to the rival locally made Soap...CS of course!

12 NEAREST AND DEAREST 6.70...Granada Sitcom with Hilda Baker (I must get a little hand put on this watch), and Jimmy Jewel at "Pledge`s Pickles". The Factory they inherited. Hilda as Nelly Pledge, oft noted to say to her cousin in-law "Have You Been, Walter?"

13 BLESS THIS HOUSE 6.70...the best ever sitcom from ITV, and one that never ages. The familly problems of the Abbot household with Sid James/Diana Coupland/Sally Geeson/Robin Stewart all inspiring today`s stuff like "My Family". ITV could get millions of viewers by repeating it, but don`t...Idiots!

14 PUBLIC EYE 6.70...Alfred Burke plays investigator "Frank Marker"...another series that should be repeated instead of endless repeats of "The Sweeney" et al

15 TORPEDO BOY 6.60...a BBC showing, that escapes me...Anyone???

16 NINE O`CLOCK NEWS 6.50

17 CROSSROADS (TUES) 6.40

18 COUNTRY MATTERS 6.40...Granada series based on stories by H.E. Bates & A.E. Coppard "The Simple Life" in this edition

19 THE ADVENTURES OF BLACK BEAUTY 6.30...the kids tv series on Sundays at 4.50pm, with Judi Bowker and the horse that was also used on the Lloyds Bank adverts

20 CROSSROADS 6.30

Also on TV in 1973, were the unfortunate rise of Afternoon Soaps with Emmerdale Farm/General Hospital & another entitled "Rooms"...dealing with the tenants at 35 Mafeking Terrace. It went out on Tuesdays & Wednesdays, with different characters appearing each week. The constant twosome were the 2 in the basement "Dorothy" the landlady & "Clive". Other people who stayed there were the likes of John Duttine & Jan Francis. It was axed in 1977. Also featured on ITV at 12.30pm, were the likes of "Rainbow" hosted by David Cooke (the original host)/Bungle the Bear/Zippy the zipped mouthed martian. This was part of a 4 week fare with Inigo Pipkin/Mr Trimble & Hickory House followed by the likes of Rupert Bear/Larry The Lamb & A Handful Of Songs. That was all followed by the "News At One" with Leonard Parkin. The BBC childrens set at 4pm, brought us "Play School", "Jackanory", "Blue Peter" at 4.45 and the likes of "Boss Cat" at 5.15...Boss Cat being the cartoon series "Top Cat", changed by the BBC because there was a cat food called Top Cat...Other days gave us "Wacky Races & Space Kidettes", "Vision On", & "Crackerjack" with Michael Aspel/Jacqueline Clark/Peter Glaze & Don McClean. In the "Watch With Mother" spot at 1.45pm, new was "Fingerbobs" with the super-suave Rick Jones, along with Fingermouse, that wonderful Tortoise fingerpuppet called "Flash", & the bird "Gulliver". Great stuff! And with Bob Baker (alias Roger Scott) on Radio One, you couldn`t go wrong.

The Top Albums in Feb 1973: The 8th LP from Elton, containing the rather fatuous "High Flying Bird". The album spending 7 weeks at number one. Carly Simon having to be content with number 2. The rather dodgy "A Clockwork Orange", which I still find hard to watch, and the over use of Russian slang "soomka" is one, and "malchik" another. The Elvis disc was in quadrophonic sound, reminding me of the days when Radio One did went quadrophonic on a Saturday afternoon, with the likes of Alan Freeman.

Good to see Gabriella still high on pre orders. Hopefully she can get a Top 10 hit after all!

And LOL @ Avatar STILL being #01 on Box Office. Must be one of the most overrated movies ever!

Helping Haiti #1 on physicals, I bet the sales for it are very low, its #9 on the official could be around 15k, and everyone thought it will pass a million in no time
Wow! Amy Mcdonald did well this week, I hope she is not going to beat Boyzone on the albums. Also, what has happened to Ellie's album I thought she was going to do well next week.

An interesting look back to 1973, the charts then were (just) before my time and TV for me was mainly limited to Black Beauty, Blue Peter and Doctor Who but a couple of the TV programmes outside of the usual This Is Your Life / Coronation Street / Crossroads / M&W etc do ring a bell.

Galloping Home, the theme from The Adventures Of Black Beauty, is still one of my favourite TV themes of all time. Was it composed for the programme? It's magical!

I also remember vaguely watching Bless This House and Love Thy Neighbour but later, Sid James son was played by someone else, those 2 ITV comedies were classics, they don't make comedy like that anymore, also On The Buses

Back in the days when comedy was so un-PC!. I liked Bless This House as I thought Sally Geeson was rather nice - and I was probably too young to properly understand why  . Love Thy Neighbour was one of the big comedy shows back then and the last I saw of it was on UK Gold in the late 90s when UK Gold showed the programme with the announcer saying in advance of the programme something like "UK Gold would like to state that we do not endorse the sentiments expressed in this programme and the comments in no way reflect our stance. Some viewers may find comments made in this programme offensive but are reflective of the time". Something like that... On The Buses used to be a favourite of mine back then too, but now it looks so dated and ridiculous, two old looking men chasing young girls and having the girls fawn over them!

) Position without downloads alone

= Position on Chart Show tv

Maybe surprises all round this week, as Jason takes it...and Alicia Keys is number one on most download sites except iTunes. Then, Helping Haiti lose out on the Download front, and on iTunes for the week (Sun-Fri) they fall from 1 to 16!

Don`t forget http://www.thesuperstation.info for the chart that`s always a little ahead on Sunday at 4. Then at 7pm, a hour of bubblers & new releases in the "Ones To Watch".

I'm surprised Jason Derulo made the top as I was expecting Florence / Dizzee to make it. I know you don't give sales info but it must be close? Or is it not?

I sincerely hope Rock That Body makes the top 40 this week just to keep BEP's streak going. :o

Anyway, :yahoo: :w00t:  etc. for In My Head, best #1 in a while.

And wow at Alphabeat, but I hope Muse stay ahead. Also Chiddy Bang for top ten but not at the expense of JLS pl0x.

Edited by ßřāŷ₣¡šҺ

Yay, Black Eyed Peas finally out of the Top 40!! :D

Good to see Pixie & Ke$ha on the rise too.

You know Robbie, I`m thinking...What would the response be if "Love Thy Neighbour" was shown today...the early episodes were more derogatory of the later ones, which I found rather tame. And as the dodgy remarks come from the central character of "Eddie Booth", & "Bill Reynolds" is just as bad back to him, and all the other characters don`t have a go, anyway it`s not as "rascist" unfunny as many pundits make it seem with "Eddie" coming a cropper in the end at all times. Then the sexist "On The Buses" is probably worse...

Pretty close, as both were neck & neck on Thursday PM. Jason will take it for Sunday, as he has the advantage of appearing on all download sits, and Dizzee/Florence do not, that`s how they missed out.

Hi Dave great read.

Could you say if you think Sugas are safe where they are atm? or could they even move up?

It`s not impossible for them to go, over Timbaland.

Alphabeat top 30 :w00t: Can't believe I was fretting about them going top 40 last week  Hope they can stick or climb for Sunday. Are they above or below Sugababes on the album pre-orders?

Below, Tom.

Thanks, oh well. Maybe they can scrape top 40 with that too...

And did you know all 4 of the main characters of Love Thy Neighbour have appeared in Eastenders during the past 25 years, Jack Smethurst had a walk on part, Nina played someone's mother, obviously Kate Williams & Randolph are in the show itself at present
