August 8, 201014 yr Author First update in almost four months LOL 41 Peter Beale 5.06 +++ 08 from C.R. --- 03s from Dandy, Feelthefever, Gary, Gooddelta & Luke (Last year: 39th, 4.12) http://cdn.thefrisky.com/images/uploads/justin-biebers-been-hacked-070610-m.jpg Frighteningly alike to Ian in many respects, the more boring Beale sibling has been a bit-player for as long as he's been in the show, but I don't think it's fair to totally write him off. I've always enjoyed the scenes between he and Lucy and I think they've done a good job of portraying a sibling relationship - they don't often agree but they can usually confide in one another, and that's cute. I think it's fair to say that with half of the teen characters being recast there's no immediate plan to push Peter to the front of a storyline so in the meantime viewers will have to be content with watching him kiss Fatboy's ass - a lovely image, I'm sure you'll agree. 40 Owen Turner 5.07 +++ 08s from Callum & James --- 01 from Luke http://www.wildsound-filmmaking-feedback-events.com/images/hitchcock_psycho.jpg EastEnders played a clever game with Owen. First introduced back in 2006 as an evil villain whose idea of a nice day out with his daughter Libby was to take her for a lovely drowning in the river (though who could honestly blame him?), Owen later emerged a changed man - and I don't mean changed in the Walford sense of 'changed for a maximum of three weeks before becoming bored of not being a murderer/alcoholic/husband-thief'. No, Owen truly had reformed and that made things interesting - he was regularly facing off with Lucas and yet it was Owen, the former daughter-drowner, who we as an audience were siding with. That might just mean we're all heartless pigs but I'm more inclined to see it as a very clever piece of juxtaposition which allowed us to really get a feel for just how evil Lucas was. Owen as a character in himself was never particularly interesting by any means but I do think he was likeable and so 40th place here seems about right. 39 Libby Fox 5.25 +++ 09 from Theo --- 0 from Luke (Last year: 39th, 4.12) http://planetgreen.discovery.com/fashion-beauty/images/2009-02/fashion-copy.jpg Everyone has a Squiggle in their life don't they? That one extra special friend or relative who manages to make anything and everything into a whinge. You go out of your way to allow their violent alcoholic father back into their lives and they replay you by whinging about the tension at the dinner table. It defies belief. It's hard to decide just what dear Libby's biggest handicap as a character was - the terrible 'quirky, endearing' nickname which nobody outside of the family would ever utter for fear of being labelled a re****, the glasses lifted straight from the recycling tray at the local library or penchant for combat trousers as if it was still 2002. In her defence, though, Libby became a more interesting character in the last few weeks of her life - she got herself a nasty disabled boyfriend (equality and open-mindedness at its finest) and finally started standing up to the creeps who had previously populated her existence. I began to actively like her during her final week or two in the show, but her understated taxi exit was ultimately all the character deserved and she never stood up in comparisons with her sister, the great Chelsea 'The Slut Who Struts' Fox. 38 Archie Mitchell 5.50 +++ 08s from Aaron, Gary & Mikeyjosh --- 0 from Gooddelta (Last year: 51st, 2.29) http://www.screwyourecession.ca/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/medium_voldemort-looking-up-9fzhu4mo.jpg Now here's a surprise. Surely the greatest Walford villain since the days of Johnny Allen, Archie was proof that not every bad-ass in Albert Square had to be an East End mafioso with a never-ending list of 'connections' in his phone who could take out a hit against anybody with twenty minutes' notice. Instead he was deceitful, manipulative, often cold, always calculating, sometimes loving, a complete control freak, an enigma and an unsuspecting family man. Bloody complex, basically. Sadly I was taking a break from EastEnders until late 2008 so I only really saw a year of his antics and missed the showdown with Ronnie in Weymouth and all that lark but I think it's fair to say there was a barely a single person in Walford he came into contact with who he didn't manage to manipulate for his own gain, be it Suzy (PRAISE HER!), his golden girl Roxy, a lovesick Peggy or an ever-greedy Billy. More villains in soap need the complexities of character which made Archie such a magnetic man to watch and shame on you, Buzzjack, for voting him so lowly in this list (though I think I only gave him a 7 myself and I do think that if it was done closer to his demise he'd have finished higher - his stuff with Janine and Ronnie at Christmas was a treat).
August 8, 201014 yr OMG its back, Libby makes me feel sick. Archie was a great chracter. The others mean nothing to me
August 8, 201014 yr Did I really give Archie a 0 :o Correct, had the rate been done in January he would have got at least an 8 from me...
August 8, 201014 yr Awww Peter  He's so adorable though, I probably gave him a ridicolous score for it too. It would be rather nice if he got a good storyline every now & then, instead of being second fiddle to Lucy, I think he's been fairly good in what he's been given though. Libby always was good for nothing, in complete contrast to the wonderful Denise and Chelsea. I'd like Libby to return, but not played by Belinda Owussu (which I feel guilty for saying, as she comes across wonderfully in interviews) I wasnt really watching EastEnders that much when Owen returned im afraid but obviously Archie was just a brilliant villain.
August 8, 201014 yr Archie Mitchell is a legend <3 Stacey Branning neé Slater better win this or Imma have a bitch fit. I wouldn't mind Dame Shirley Carter winning though.
August 8, 201014 yr Damn, wish i'd have voted in the thread, hope Heather "The Gormless Cow Who You Don't Want Popping Round While A Serial Killer's Holding You Hostage" Trott, appears soon.
August 9, 201014 yr Archie was a great villain. Libby's just annoying full stop, thank god shes gone!
August 9, 201014 yr HOLY CRAP AN UPDATE. Can't believe Archie is so low, just shows how outdated this is.
August 9, 201014 yr I was probably one of the ones who marked Archie low to be fair. I'm going to be honest, unpopular view time - I don't think he was a particularly convincing villain. On paper, and in script, yes ALL the ingredients were there, and he could have been the greatest baddie the show has had (bar JANINE). But not for one moment did I ever find Larry Lamb a threatening presence, and therein lay the problem. He'd have had issues scaring Ben Mitchell.
August 9, 201014 yr Author I don't agree at all! I think he was formidable and bloody creepy. MOVING ON: 37 Lucy Beale 5.69 +++ 10 from Mikey --- -1 from Gooddelta (Last year: 44th, 3.94) http://i532.photobucket.com/albums/ee327/cookiemonster21_bucket/beautiful-witch.jpg Lucy 'Daughter of Ian, Spawn of Satan' Beale tens to split opinion in quite a big way and it's no different on Buzzjack. Some people think that in an effort to market her as a 'mini Cindy' she's become a cardboard cut-out of a 'bitch' who does little other than smirk and generally be wooden as if she'd attended the Jack Branning School of MDF. Others, such as myself, consider her a cool, slyly manipulative teen with the potential to grow into a classic character. Whether that potential will be realised seems debatable now that Melissa Suffield has been dismissed for 'bad behaviour' so we'll see how her re-cast goes. It's always tough to imagine how a re-cast could possibly work when the character is as well established as Lucy. Regardless of the actress though, this little witch has truly spewed out enough nastiness to ensure a free pass into hell, from aborting the baby she'd promised to give to her oblivious mother-in-law Jane to outing her uncle's lover as a filthy homothexual, which of course required a little anonymous blackmail, that old soap favourite. The best we can hope for I think is for an actress who will be more universally praised in the role and who can keep up such storylines and convince everybody that she's a worthy successor to Cindy. 36 Lucas Johnson 5.88 +++ 09s from Aaron, Feelthefever & Jark --- 01s from Dandy & Theo (Last year: 35th, 4.47) http://mamaliberty.files.wordpress.com/2009/11/preacher-man.jpg Lucas is a bizarre character - whereas his storyline only just reached its climax after almost a year of being built up, his character reached its peak a good while ago, and ever since he's been cruising fairly uninterestingly, murdering prostitutes here and showing slappers the way of God there, but never really grabbing the attention of the audience. I think this is more down to the writing of the story and the considerable inconsistencies in the way his character has been portrayed, because Don Gilet has always seemed to give it his all, and there's certainly been moments both where we've felt for him against the odds and where we've hated him every bit as much as we were meant to. Ultimately though, when he broke down in the cellar after admitting to himself that he wasn't carrying out the work of God at all, and was in fact just plain mad, I didn't feel any pit for him and I suspect I was meant to. Nonetheless we've been treated to shots of Lucas with his magnificent chest out, which obviously made his entire story arc completely worth sticking with, flaws and all. Mmmpapi. 35 Tamwar Masood 5.88 +++ 10 from Mikey --- 02 from Theo (Last year: 37th, 4.24) http://www.thedatingrulebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/nerd.jpg Like the rest of his family, Tamwar has been introduced via a slow-burn method and we've slowly come to be familiar with his character, away from the melodrama of a big storyline, and I think that's why he's so great. Everything he says (usually in a deadpan voice with his mouth slightly down-turned) is completely true to the character - he's been consistently well-written and acted in a very real, understated way. I think it's fair to say Tam became truly loveable when he quietly voiced his support for his big brother Syed in the wake of gayshame-gate, telling him he was 'brave'. Perfectly played and I think that in the next rate he'll finish a fair bit higher but, even though he works as a supporting character, I'd like him to have a substantial storyline of his own one day.
August 9, 201014 yr Why did I give Tamwar such a low score? He'd get at least a 7 now! :o I've never really been keen on Lucas but his final weeks were good so he'd get a five now. On Archie - I never really liked him but I do think he deserved higher. Lucy obviously deserved a lot higher too.
August 9, 201014 yr I'm definitely in the Melissa-Suffield-was-abysmally-useless camp. The way Lucas turned out was a shame - you could see the last-minute rewrites, because what could have been a tremendous thriller plot turned into an utter, utter mess. The writing was all over the place, and they couldn't seem to decide whether Lucas was to be loathed or pitied. One minute he was a sympathetic character who made one mistake which sent him on downward spiral. The next he was simply out and out deranged. Tamwar really should be a lot higher, by far the most likeable of the teen characters on the show.
August 9, 201014 yr Melissa was actually far far better with the more 'dramatic' stuff (like the abortion plot, she was quite fabulous) than when she was trying to be made into a little Cindy, where she came off try hard and irritating.
August 9, 201014 yr Tamwar is just brilliant, would be a lot higher if the rate had happened more recently. Like Peter, a storyline or two of his own would be good, and I think they should try and get him to form a friendship or two now that Libby's gone. Lucy was very hit & miss. The re-cast isnt wonderful though, the character is a lot more known than that of Lauren.
September 7, 201014 yr Author 34 Darren Miller 6.06 +++ 09 from Gary --- 02 from Shoat (Last year: 34th, 4.53) It's a soapland rule: you can't be allowed to exist without having a family (blood or unofficially adopted) living in the same postcode. If you somehow defy this rule you will be a shit character forever, occasionally propping up the bar in the Vic to perve on Tracey before being given a two-episode exit story arc and being unceremoniously dumped into the back of a black cab. So how Darren Miller has managed to survive this long is quite beyond me. Lucky for us he did though because for my money he's become a pretty decent character over the past six months. The writers cleverly saw the potential for Max to take somebody under his wing as a sort of unspoken replacement for Bradley and Darren seemed like the perfect fit. After months of living and hanging out solely with Minty (a man thrice his age) Darren has been allowed to mix with characters he never had before - watching Abi fawn over him has provided numerous moments of magic; Max making smutty innuendos about his decision to get circumcised, even moreso. A great example of throwing neighbours together into an unexpected scenario which just works. More of this please EE. 33 Lauren Branning 6.13 +++ 10 from Mikey --- 02 from Theo (Last year: 18th, 6.18) Firstly, how in the hell was Lauren Branning a top 20 finish in the previous rate? DID SHOAT FIDDLE THE RESULTS? And it looks like he isn't the only one who's been fiddling (if you KNOW WHAT I MEAN) judging by Mikey's rather generous 10. Of course 2008 was the year of the Branning and Lauren was coming of age - learning to partake in Grand Theft Auto as a means of knocking down one's own father, and other such typical teenage behaviour - but I hardly think a top 20 placing was justified given that she makes her Uncle Jack look like Jeff Bridges in the acting stakes. Either way she tumbles big time here, actually managing a lower average score than last year despite Buzzjack going a bit loony on that front this time around, and rightly so. She's barely been seen, save for popping up occasionally to attempt to sneer at Abi or Lucy (either the kids start on botox early these days or she is an actual robot incapable of facial expressions) or to disgrace her delightful mother, Tanya 'They Call Her The Messiah' Branning, by being a stone bore. With a recast in the works it seems as if Bryan Kirkwood wants Lauren back at the centre of the action. Perhaps this time when she attempts to lower Albert Square's population count she'll do it with some semblance of emotion - we can but pray! 32 Minty Peterson 6.25 +++ 08s from Callum, Jark & Mikey --- 04 from C.R. (Last year: 32nd, 4.88) It must be easy, being Minty: you can just wake up each morning and decide who you love that day. Mondays, it's Manda. Saturdays, it's Sam. In the holidays, it's Heather (except bank holidays). Perhaps he has a rota. Sadly Minty hasn't managed to found satisfaction in the love of two women, at least one of whom was distinctly out of his league anyway, and is still pining after Sam on alternate days of the week, mystifyingly undeterred by her terror-inducing 26 hours of loud labour (at the end of which she still found time for a faaahmily barney or five - the joys of being a Mitchell). Truth be told though, I don't mind Minty as far as supporting characters go - he's likeable (quite the transformation from his introduction into the show as a bast*rd landlord), is always up for attending the stag party of a token friendless male character, and just occasionally says something insightful - I quite enjoyed his heart to heart with Shirley back when she was grinning and smiling whilst playing the role of perfect Stepford wife. Minty's days in Walford are numbered, and I think it's fair to say he probably won't be actively missed (nobody in this rate could even stretch to a pity score of 9), but it could be worse. He could be Billy Mitchell. 31 Ricky Butcher 6.38 +++ 09s from Feelthefever & Mikeyjosh --- 04s from Aaron, Callum & Shoat (Last year: 41st, 4.06) Another bit-part player who seems to be being given a little more to do of late, Ricky has survived pretty much solely as a result of his relationship with Bianca. The writers know his limitations. He's fairly weak, a bland but likeable guy who provides B with a nice doormat to stomp all over once in a while and inject a healthy dose of her loud personality into. In fairness to Ricky he has real chemistry her and that seems justification enough for the character despite not being of much interest himself. It says a lot for Ricky that he has even managed to do what nobody in soapland has done before - announce his paternity to his secret daughter without causing any kind of DRAMA whatsoever. The whole thing was smoother than a Jack Branning chat-up line. Quite an accomplishment but perhaps also a reflection of the fact that there's not a lot you can squeeze out of somebody like Ricky without boring the audience half to death. For as long as Bianca is gracing the square with her plethora of classy leopard print tops n' tights, though, there'll most likely be a place for Ricky in Walford.
September 7, 201014 yr Author Ugh I don't have the inspiration for finding pics :( I did a quick google but it wasn't happenin'. Sorry. I might add some later.
