OMG AN UPDATE

33 Lauren Branning 6.13 +++ 10 from Mikey --- 02 from Theo

(Last year: 18th, 6.18)

Firstly, how in the hell was Lauren Branning a top 20 finish in the previous rate? DID SHOAT FIDDLE THE RESULTS? And it looks like he isn't the only one who's been fiddling (if you KNOW WHAT I MEAN) judging by Mikey's rather generous 10.

If I was going to fix the results, she'd have been nowhere near the top 20 believe me! Madeleine Duggan was unfortunately quite ATROCIOUS, and what with the Beale siblings already inhabiting the Square, there really wasn't much use for ANOTHER expressionless robot.

I think the result last year was a reflection of her being a.) female, and b.) having just run over Max, who was rather unpopular at the time.

The results this year seem to be a little better and actually based on the characters.

By the way, I think we ALL know it's JUST YOU who refers to Tanya as the Messiah! Everyone else knows full well that title belongs to TRACY.

Darren; to be fair at the time of scoring he WAS very much a 2/10, his only shining light of redemption being that scene where he broke down in Heather's arms panicking that he was going to be a $h!t dad (he is).

But you're right, bundling Darren into the Branning family was a random but genius move. He, Max and Abi all bounce off each other rather well, and I'm beginning to think the main reason he used to be so $h!t was because he was always associated with AWFUL characters like Libby and Adam before.

POOR OLD MINTY. Despite being a bit of a waster, he is quite the likeable character. The whole thing where he flitted from Manda to the HORRIFIC Sam was a bit odd though, and you want to give him a bit of a wake-up slap.

Ricky - he's not a terrible character, but is pretty much solely his relationship with Bianca that keeps him going. Sid Owen is never going to be winning any BAFTAs, and I think the writers are quite aware of that, hence his rather low-key role in the show.

What's quite odd though, is that despite never really doing an awful lot, Ricky Butcher is still one of the more famous characters from the show's history, and even with Biance at this side, I've no idea how he managed that.

I'm just glad that it's up, great list, not sure why Heather is so high, but hope that Ronnie & Janine are higher!

Nice selection there of fairly decent characters, Darren always had potential which is why he presumably survived where all of the other Millers didnt, but never lived up to it. The pairing up of him with Max has been genius though. I'm not terribly sure of his relationship with Jodie though.

Minty and Ricky have both also provided good as background characters, nothing hugely special but they fit the roles well. Sad to be seeing Minty go but not a major loss.

I think I actually gave Lauren a fairly high score last year :( I never really thought of her as awful until you compare her to some of the other younger cast members and you realize how p***-poor she actually is.

Let's face it, now that Abi has suddenly gotten GOOD with a bit of a knack for comedy they really couldn't keep Lauren on. The older child is not ALLOWED to be the inferior actor.

What is that even meant to mean? I did an update like two weeks ago. This is FREQUENT for me!

Shoat always used to take breaks of at LEAST a month!

However I shall relent and do an update tonight. I can't promise pictures though.

Excuse me, but I think you'll find that at this point last year (in fact on this VERY DAY) I had already finished the entire rate!

Haha, I loved Download It, but apart from that :blink: They tried SO many times to make it though!

Anyways, back on subject.. I'd be pleased if this was done in time for Christmas Day

SIX DAYS LATER

Noticing that the original rate thread itself was opened on October 19th 2009, and that this is STILL nowhere near completion, I officially christen Jark WORST HOST EVER.

I SWEAR I will do more today. On Tanya Branning's LIFE!

Tanya's an idiot anyway I wish they'd kept her dead.

I want Shirley to win this because she reminds me of my mother. And because anyone who has sex with Phil deserves a prize of some sort. And she's a nice character.

30 Ian Beale 6.63 +++ 10 from Mikey & Mikeyjosh --- 0 from Theo

(Last year: 19th, 6.12)

The stingiest entrepreneur in London takes a dip this year, and whilst I think it's a bit unfair that the show's longest-serving cast member is relatively overlooked on here, it has to be said that 2009 was a particularly quiet year for the Beales. It strikes me that he might be the sort of character who is more appreciated by casual viewers than hardcore fans because, 19 times out of 20, they know exactly what to expect from him. He will wake up, order Jane to bring him breakfast in bed, abuse a few customers in the caf or chippy, order Jane to scrub the floor, tip a few compliments in the direction of his undeserving offspring, tell Marie to go a little lighter on the margarine, etc etc. That's the sort of familiarity that viewers probably enjoy but I don't think it's to say Ian isn't an exciting character when more heavily involved in a storyline - he can be unpredictably kind or loving on occasion and Adam Woodyatt tends to play that excellently, which is quite the feat given the ease with which he plays Ian as the nasty panto-like villain-boss 90% of the time. He's said he wants to remain with the soap for as long as they'll have him which makes perfect sense to me - he's part of the furniture.

29 Max Branning 6.63 +++ 10 from C.R. & Mikeyjosh --- -01 from Luke

This right here is a true WTF BUZZJACK? moment - Max might have hit his peak over the past year since this rate was compiled but even in 2009 he was an excellent, highly watchable character acted with gusto by the fantastic Jake Wood. I can only speculate that maybe you lot were a bit sick of he and Tanya being on and off every other evening because ever since Christmas 2007 with the Stax reveal, he's been a genuinely essential character who the show probably couldn't survive without. For my money the Stax two-hander earlier this year was one of the show's finest episodes and proof that Max is one of the most complex, layered, passionate and unpredictable characters ever to grace the square. One can only hope that Max's recent drama - and christ, there's been a lot of it - propels him into the top 10 the next time we do a rate. Also it must be noted that whilst he looks somewhat like a nut he has a bizarre sort of sex appeal. Or is it just me?

28 Jim Branning 6.63 +++ 10 from Feelthefever, Mikey & Mikeyjosh --- 02 from Luke

Oh COME ON YOU GUYS, this is disgraceful. Clearly everybody was high on nostalgia when throwing 10s in Jim's direction because he literally doesn't do anything except nod valiantly whilst Patrick suggests an afternoon of drinking ('for old times' sake, mon!') or Dot insists that she's 'not one to gossip!'. Take off your rosey shades, Buzzjack!

27 Patrick Trueman 6.69 +++ 10 from Theo --- 05 from Aaron, C.R., Dandy, Gary & Ryan

From one extreme to another I actually think that Patrick has been the best he's ever been as a character over the past three or four months, in the wake of the Lucas ordeal. For once there was more to him than just getting the horn over E20's elderly female contingent or sneakily hiding twenties inside his hat. I liked his interraction with Liz but most of all the way that Denise's supposed 'death' made him evaluate his relationship with her and the kids, and admit to himself that they were his family now. I also like the running jokes about Denise's habit of telling him what to do inside his own house - it's like a nice little acknowledgement by the writers that he's more than just some random straggler-on to the Fox family unit. At a time when the show is running dangerously low on its oldies it's comforting that the few it has are going from strength to strength.
