Jason Derulo gets this week’s new #1 with In My Head

19 year old US R&B singer songwriter, actor and dancer Jason Derulo hits the top with his second single In My Head ... and in everyone else's head now. This follows on quickly from his #3 hit Whatcha Say which sampled Imogen Heap’s Hide & Seek, which only just exited the top 40 a few weeks ago. Both tracks are taken from his debut self titled album due out next week. Early indications were that the machine and the rascal (Florence & Dizzee) would climb a place to #1 but the Brits effect seems to have worn off, leaving the path clear for Derulo. This replaces Helping Haiti at the top, as Everybody Hurts tumbles down to #9 after a huge sales decrease.

Rihanna – Rude Boy climbs to #3

It seems that Rihanna Fentry can do no wrong these days, as this week she scores what is now her 10th top 3 hit in since her debut back in 2002. Rude Boy climbs another 3 places to reach #3 after the video to the track was released. Like her last single Russian Roulette (which has just dropped out of the top 40 this week) this one is not being given a CD or digital single release, in effect only an album track download.

Ellie Goulding – Starry Eyed enters at #4

This week’s second highest new entry comes from a female singer/songwriter who has been hotly tipped as one to watch in 2010. Ellie topped the BBC Sound of 2010 poll and also won a Brit award for the Critic’s Choice, both of which are usually good indications of a successful career start. Last year, Under The Sheets was given a limited release to serve as a taster and now the first proper single Starry Eyed debuts in the top 5. All this success has made her starry eyed then it seems!

Sugababes – Wear My Kiss enters at #7

Now for a third straight top 10 hit for Sugababes version 4, Wear My Kiss enters at #7 this week. This follows on from #2 hit Get Sexy and #8 hit About A Girl, all 3 tracks from new album Sweet 7. Also this week, former member Keisha Buchannan has challenged the current line up’s use of the name as there are no original members of the Sugababes left. Groups by the name of the Sugababes in total have now scored 18 top 10 hits since Overload debuted in 2000.

Chiddy Bang – Opposite Of Adults enters at #12

The US hip hop duo going under the name of Chiddy Bang make an explosion into #12 this week, with their track Opposite Of Adults. This track samples the synth music from Kids by MGMT and enters 4 places higher than that track eventually peaked. The title Opposite Of Adults is apparently a reference to the track it samples, as the opposite of an adult is a kid ... clever eh!

Leona Lewis – I Got You climbs to #14

Following full release this week and much speculation this the track was going to flop badly, I Got You rises a massive 26 places to #14 this week. With limited airplay and no X Factor to promote, it is doing very well indeed to reach top 15. However failure to progress further will mean I Got You is the first full single release to miss the top 5, Ms Lewis has had 6 so far including 3 #1’s which is very good going at any rate.

Alphabeat – Hole In My Heart enters at #29

Danish pop group Alphabeat get their fifth top 40 hit this week with Hole In My Heart, the second to come from their forthcoming new album The Beat Is. Their biggest and only UK top 10 hit to date is their 2007 debut Fascination and the only one to miss the top 40 is What Is Happening … and that’s what is happening!

Muse – Resistance enters at #38

Epic rock group Muse find little resistance this week as they enter at #38 with the third single and title track to be taken from their current album. Last single Undisclosed Desires missed the top 40, their biggest still remains Supermassive Black Hole which made #4.

This week’s Flop of the Pops!

Missing out his week are Mumford & Sons with The Cave, several new Glee tracks and Cerys Matthews. Electro-Dance duo Groove Armada missed out again with Paper Romance (a cross between Paper Gangsta and Bad Romance … or not). Rockers Wolfmother miss out with their new release White Feather, as do Turin Brakes with Sea Change ... the sea hasn't changed in their favour it seems.

Lady Gaga climbs to #1 in the album chart with The Fame Monster

Lady Gaga finds herself back at #1 in the album chart this week, but for the first time with The Fame Monster which is essentially a double album in the UK. Glee Cast drop to #2 whilst #3 and #4 also swap places (Alicia and Florence). Marina & The Diamonds gets this week’s highest new entry by crashing in at #5 with The Family Jewels, living up to her early promise. One place behind is the second album from indie band The Courteeners, Falcon gets them their second top 10 album. The late Johnny Cash comes in at #9 with the 6th album in his American Recordings series subtitled Ain't No Grave. Rihanna repeaks at #16 with Rated R, a new Hollies retrospective enters just outside the top 20 as well as one by the late Dame Gracie Fields entitled Our Gracie.

Next week’s big releases

Like this week, there are lots of big new releases coming out next week in the singles and in the albums. Amongst the new names are Tinie Tempah, Gramophonedzie, Daisy Dares You and Giggs, whist Wiley, Boyzone, Black Eyed Peas and Avril Lavigne are also expected to enter next week's chart. On the albums, Ellie Goulding releases her debut album Lights, along with Jason Derulo, Sharleen Spiteri, Carly Simon, John Barrowman and Alphabeat amongst others.

Personal opinion

I really like Jason Derulo’s In My Head, much better and much more original than his last one which ruined Imogen Heap’s beautiful Hide & Seek! At least this has stopped that dire mashup from Florence and Dizzee, Florence is great but I think Dizzee is terrible. Starry Eyed is very unusual sounding to say the least and has been a bit of a grower for me, however I now love Ellie Goulding’s sound and will buy her album soon. The Sugababes have turned into a bit of a joke lately, however their new single Wear My Kiss is pretty good but not nearly as good as the likes of About You Now and Push The Button. I love Cheryl’s new song and hope it can get to a decent height for her, as she deserves it with all those horrible marriage problems. Chiddy Bang’s song is dire to say the least, it ruins the great song that is Kids by MGMT by only playing a small bit of it then rapping all over it. I am not a fan of Alphabeat at all and hated Fascination, however their new song is at least bearable. Muse’s new song is reasonable just like most of their output, not bad but not good either. Great to see that awful Glee rubbish knocked off #1 in the albums, I do like Gaga’s album but would rather have seen Marina get there instead.

Could you please explain how #8 on the radio airplay chart equates to "limited airplay"? Most artists would love to have that kind of "limited airplay."

I Got You may not have flopped "badly", but the album didn't even re-enter the top 40; so it was clearly a fan-based single release. There's really no point in promoting a third single.

I just thought it hadn't had the airplay that previous singles have had, maybe it has but I just haven't heard it as much! I argee that it does seem to be more of a fan based release which can be seen by its massive climb and it probably won't stick around for very long either.

Why did the Avatar song not get released - SURELY it was a worldwise smash waiting to happen! I don't understand.
