When was the last time a French song was in the top 10, or even top 40 in the UK?

I think it was 'Moi...Lolita' by Alizee which at the time got lots of airplay on the music channels - especially The Box. Further back in 1988, we had Vanessa Paradis 'Joe Le Taxi' and Desireless 'Voyage Voyage' both make the UK top 10.

Therefore I really don't see why Stromae's massive European hit can't be released exactly as it is in the UK. The chorus would get loads of young teenagers going round singing "i love dance"!!! Or singing the "la la la" bit.

Yeah, maybe.

I don't know exactly what the main lyrics would be if the song was translated ("Watch me dance", or "Then we dance" perhaps?), but I don't think they'd fit in with the song, because the lyrics in French are kind of soft, but in English, you might have harder sounds, (e.g. the 'tch' in "watch"), which wouldn't fit into the song.

But according to this study, 23% of people in the UK understand French, so we have some hope I suppose...

Yeah, maybe.

Having translated the lyrics into English, I would've thought the song was actually called 'Then I Dance' rather than 'Then One Dances'. To be honest, if they rewrote the song in English they'd probably rename the song 'I Love Dance' which would actually change what the song is all about.

They teach French in schools. Maybe some high school teachers should have a lesson of French dedicated to Stromae's song. They could analyse the lyrics and understand what the content of the song is about. Surely that would appeal to even those pupils who usually hate French lessons.

They don't need to change it. I know it's highly unlikely but put this a-list on Radio 1 (as if they'd play a French language song :drama:) and all over the music channels and watch it go at least top 3. It's not the public that aren't receptive to foreign music, it's that radio/TV don't support it so a lot of the public don't get a chance to hear it.

Yeah, you might be right. We don't know that the public aren't receptive to music in different languages, because it's been so long since any of them have been popularized. We'd have so many better songs in the charts, if we got more European songs here. I mean, I can't think of many European songs that are popular in the UK, or will be soon. We've got Stereo Love, Hot by Inna and Alejandro by Lady Gaga. There's probably some more, but there's so much more out there which people here would love.

Given that's it's big all over Europe at the moment and Brits will hear it on their holidays, the minute it appears on some compilation and starts climbing the UK iTunes Top 100, Stromae or some dodgy dance act will do an English language version

Can you create a separate thread if you want to post Canadian iTunes updates, as this is for pop bar updates.

Thanks :)

Yeah I'd figured you say that :kink:

Why is that Gnarls Barkley song so high on france iTunes?

It's on a car ad. Nothing like getting a reply two weeks late eh?

Hurts doing well in Denmark there, wow, wonder what the 'Danish edit' is like. I wish they'd push that single here first properly (with Radio 1 backing) rather than Better Than Love. Seems to be big in quite a few countries already!
