Mumford & Sons album is superb - Winter Winds is just beautiful. They are a bit like the Fleet Foxes as in chileld out Folky music. Both are highly recommended!

OK Go are more of a videos artist for me now, their music is pretty good (Here It Goes Again was a top 20 hit in my chart back in 2006) but the videos just eclipse it.

'Winter Winds' peaked at no. 6 in December and 'The Cave' gives Mumford & Sons their second top 10 hit in my chart. 'Little Lion Man' reached no. 19 for me last year. Maybe in retrospect it should've peaked a bit higher but it would've depended on what the top 18 tracks were that particular week.

I agree, Ok Go put a lot of effort into their videos. I wouldn't rule out' This Too Shall Pass' climbing. Even 'Here It Goes Again' climbed to no. 2 although that song debuted at no. 2!!! :P

I agree 100%. It's just a shame that everyone is still raving mad over 'Empire State Of Mind'. It's great in a way that the song is still charting reflecting on how popular the song is. Something would've been impossible in the days of physical sales. However, the song has suffered from overkill for me and I am now bored of hearing "New Yoooooorrrk". :(

07 (--) Mumford & Sons - The Cave (07) [1 wk] I must get their album, they seem to be the talk of the album chart at the moment.

I haven't got the album but I guess I'm also just as intrigued as you are. I wouldn't be surprised if Mumford & Sons were to follow in the footsteps of The Arcade Fire and Kings Of Leon to become one of the most popular rock groups in the UK.

10 (--) Boyzone - Gave It All Away (10) [1 wk] Its a grower, never thought I like it

I've liked this song since I first heard it. I'm no Boyzone fan as I already posted most of their back catalogue is made up of crap. I consider this both a fitting tribute to Stephen Gately and also a great track from Boyzone.

13 (09) The Rumour Said Fire - The Balcony (11-11-10-09-13) [5 wks] Beginning to like this

The Rumour Said Fire are a bit like Mumford & Sons/Fleet Foxes only these guys hail from Denmark.

I wouldn't personally say I adore this track. I can understand the comparisons to Lily Allen - it's the way sings parts of the song - but it's a great track nonetheless.

It had better be a top ten hit! it's better than Doesn't Mean Anything and Empire State Of Mind Part II put together in my opinion! The finest song of her career

Boyzone were quite hit and miss with me at the time...I really liked Picture Of You, No Matter What and All That I Need () and quite liked a few others, but I seem to love all of their comeback material! Backstreet Boys did indeed make some great pop in those years, shame it's gone significantly downhill since then :(

I agree 100% that 'Try Sleeping...' is better than 'DMA' and 'ESOM(PII)BD' but sadly this is the UK. -_- I do get a buzz though when I song I personally like goes onto being a successful hit in the UK charts.

I remember the Boyzone rate on ChC and was gobsmacked with the results. 'Love Me For A Reason' won!!! Although it's one of Boyzone's lesser evils. :P 'All That I Need'? That was another complete and utter non-song for me at the time. Then again it was the early summer of 1998 when the UK charts were like a shrine to Smash Hits.

True, it all depends on whether radio play it - hopefully as she seems to be the flavour of the month at the moment, and deservedly so, her latest album is brilliant :D

When I first heard this, it reminded me of Doop only with more lyrics. It's got a novelty value about this track but like all great novelty songs, the novelty wears off really quickly.

30 (--) Ellie Goulding - Starry Eyed (30) [1 wk] Her album is amazing!

I'm still not 100% sold on Ellie this brilliant new artist. She's just fortunate enough to have hit no. 1 in the album chart. Let's see how popular Ellie is at the end of the year.

love everything down to A Different Beat, the bottom four are not good at all...HOWEVER, I thought that Geri Halliwell's Look At Me (which the snoozefest beat to #1) was even more dire

13 (09) The Rumour Said Fire - The Balcony (11-11-10-09-13) [5 wks] Beginning to like this

The Rumour Said Fire are a bit like Mumford & Sons/Fleet Foxes only these guys hail from Denmark.

It really sounds like a Simon and Garfunkel track :heehee: a late 70s throwback hit, the hippie era

'Better' is forgettable. :P  It'd appear somewhere in my top 5 least fave Boyzone songs. :(

Aah yes, the abysmal "chart battle" between Boyzone Vs Geri Halliwell. I remember it well. Co-incidentally, I bought another cd single that week; Shania Twain 'That Don't Impress Me Much'. :w00t: Not only is it a billion times better than 'You Needed Me' and 'Look At Me', it also sold a lot more and was, iirc, still top 10 when Boyzone and Geri had dropped out of the top 40. Shania was the unofficial no. 1 - definitely would've been my personal chart no. 1 that particular week. :D

That's a good comparison actually Mikey. :D The track is very "Simon & Garfunkel" in its style. Sometimes you hear a song and it just clicks but you really don't know why. I just think 'The Balcony' is a great track. To think, I was only interested in hearing the track initially because it hit no. 1 in Denmark. Had it not, I might have never bothered to check it out on YouTube. :o

I didn't start my chart 'officially' until the following month but I know for a fact that In Our Lifetime by Texas was my 'unofficial' chart #1, as I have a vague recollection of it having 4 weeks at #1 from my old paper charts which sadly all went in the bin :( I also remember Runaway by Corrs and Erase/Rewind by The Cardigans each having four unofficial weeks at #1 in my chart in early 1999. I started saving my records from June 1999 onwards.

Oh, I never did personal charts in 1999. I did do my own chart way back in 1994 at the tender age of 13!!! That chart run until January 1996 but then it stopped.

Looking at the charts from early 1999 I reckon my no. 1 hits from Jan-Jun would've probably been:

02/01/99 = Chef - Chocolate Salty Balls

09/01/99 = Chef - Chocolate Salty Balls

16/01/99 = The Offspring - Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)

23/01/99 = The Offspring - Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)

30/01/99 = The Offspring - Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)

06/02/99 = The Offspring - Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)

13/02/99 = Britney Spears - Baby One More Time

20/02/99 = Britney Spears - Baby One More Time

27/02/99 = Britney Spears - Baby One More Time

06/03/99 = Britney Spears - Baby One More Time

13/03/99 = Britney Spears - Baby One More Time

20/03/99 = The New Radicals - You Get What You Give

27/03/99 = The New Radicals - You Get What You Give

03/04/99 = The New Radicals - You Get What You Give

10/04/99 = The New Radicals - You Get What You Give

17/04/99 = TLC - No Scrubs

24/04/99 = TLC - No Scrubs

01/05/99 = TLC - No Scrubs

08/05/99 = Backstreet Boys - I Want It That Way

15/05/99 = Shania Twain - That Don't Impress Me Much

22/05/99 = Shania Twain - That Don't Impress Me Much

29/05/99 = Shania Twain - That Don't Impress Me Much

05/06/99 = Shania Twain - That Don't Impress Me Much

12/06/99 = Madonna - Beautiful Stranger

19/06/99 = Madonna - Beautiful Stranger

26/06/99 = ATB - 9pm (Til I Come)

This is just an average guess though as I may have even had big European hits no. 1 in my chart that weren't hits in the UK. :D Still, the songs above were easily my faves songs in the UK charts during the first six months of 1999.
