This is pretty old news but it worth your attention especially if you're a big Garbage fan like me:

Shirley Manson hints at new Garbage album

Manson dropped the hint in a message to fans posted on her Facebook page after the Grammy awards yesterday (February 1).

Although she didn't explicitly say they band were recording together again, she did allude to bandmates Duke Erikson, Steve Marker and Butch Vig, the last of whom was celebrating Green Day's '21st Century Breakdown' (which he co-produced) picking up the Grammy for Best Rock Album.

"Guess who I just spent a week in the studio with?" Manson wrote, before adding, "Would you be pleased if I said one of them was called Steve and one of them was called Duke and another was a Grammy-winning producer?"

Garbage's last studio album, 'Bleed Like Me', was released in 2005.

If they're really working on a new album I don't expect to be finished this year considering how long it took to make the previous albums. But who knows...

I always liked Garbage and Shirley could write great pop melodies. I complete change in direction would be good - I dont think rehashing old sounds is worth the effort. First two albums are great though.

I've loved all four of their albums [though BeautifulGarbage is certainly the weakest] I'd love for them to come back.

And that's the reason why her solo material was never released then? :o Shame as I'd really have liked to hear it...

Geffen didn't like it... They said it was "too noir" or somesuch bullsh!t....

From Wikipedia...

A few months into Garbage's hiatus, Manson began writing a solo record, collaborating with songwriter Paul Buchanan,[18] producer Greg Kurstin,[19] soundtrack composer David Arnold,[20] and Garbage drummer Butch Vig.[21] Manson presented some of her work to Geffen Records in 2008, who found the material "too noir", prompting Manson and Geffen to mutually terminate her contract.[22] Manson continues to write material while without a record deal, writing some material with Rivers Cuomo[23] and has contacted David Byrne and Ray Davies in hope of potential collaborations.[1] In 2009, Manson posted a demo written by her and Kurstin titled "In The Snow", on her Facebook profile.[24]

And in the words of Manson herself...

"I had taken some of my solo music into the record label. They didn't really care for the direction I was moving in and I found it really disheartening. They wanted a pop hit, which I understand in terms of making money. I get that. But what they were going to ask of me was something I wasn't prepared to deliver and I felt kind of trapped. I just stopped writing. I just stopped. It was stifling."

Geffen are tw@ts.... <_<

Yea Shirley could've made it big Gwen Stefani-style with right material.

Yeah, but she dont wanna BE Gwen Stefani mate, which is what Geffen wanted her to deliver....

Funnily enough though, she wants to be Shirley Manson, how positively awkward of her...

I really hope the signs point to a new album as they are right up there with my all-time favourites, but I won't get my hopes up until there's something concrete.

I'm still really sad about what happened with the whole solo project.

Butch Vig said in 2007 (here) their next album will be different, more ''Neil Young 'Tonight's the Night' meets Leonard Cohen meets Mazzy Star -- druggy, bummer music. Not necesarily druggy, but melancholy and bittersweet.''

Also he said somewhere else that the album production will evolve depending on the moment: it could be acoustic or even techno.

Shirley put on hold her acting career so they can be more focused on making of a new album.

We'll have to wait until we'll get some official confirmation from the band. Just to be sure 100%.

Anyway I'm very excited because they're togheter back in the studio (other studio; the famous Smart Studios is history from this month).

NEW ALBUM CONFIRMED!

Edinburgh-born Manson, 44, who was previously married to sculptor Eddie Farrell, also confirmed she was recording a new album with her band Garbage. “I’m working on a record right now with the band. We’ve recorded quite a lot but it’s difficult to quantify,” she said.

“It’s the first one in a long time. I took about five years off. I’d like to do some touring next year.” She did not elaborate on the musical direction of the new album or when it would be released. “We’re just winging it right now,” she said.

Rumours of a new release had been circulating since Manson hinted in February that she had been spending time in a recording studio.

Not yet! ^_^

They never said the band split for good. In fact they said they're on hiatus (since 2005). Now it's time to go back in business.

and then Shirley drifting off to become a Hollywood extra...

Well, she was a Terminator. But I prefer her singer role...

Obviously this is good news.

Pretty Horses should be on there as that is a great track

Yes! I so can't wait. Garbage are fantastic :D

More about the band and the next album:

New record in the works for band Garbage

Posted: Friday, November 5, 2010 2:30

Garbage lead singer Shirley Manson recently revealed in her native Scotland that the mostly Madison-based band is recording a new record after a five-year hiatus.

The rest of the band is leery of talking about it, but guitarist Duke Erikson confirmed the news Thursday.

“It’s true that we’re recording,” Erikson said. “We’re working on some new music. It’s too early to say where it’s going to go.”

The band has recorded a handful of new songs and plans to go back to the studio in Los Angeles next week, he added.

“I don’t want to make too big a deal of it. It could all go south tomorrow,” Erikson said.

In 2005, Manson said that the band was taking an extended break after a world tour supporting the band’s fourth album, “Bleed Like Me,” but stopped short of calling it a breakup.

“Garbage never officially broke up contrary to what people have heard,” Erikson said. “We just went our separate ways for a little bit.”

Erikson said he’s not sure where the new material is going to lead, but added, “We’re writing some pretty good stuff and we’re enjoying doing it. It’s all we really set out to do for now.”

The new record doesn’t have a name yet. The band is simply feeling its way through writing together again and is enjoying having no deadline and no pressure, Erikson said.

Since 2005, Garbage has released just three new songs -– one single and two B-sides –- plus a 2007 greatest hits album, “Absolute Garbage.”

Manson had planned to put out a solo album, until she was cast in the now-canceled Fox TV show “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles,” the highest-rated new scripted series of the 2007-08 television season.

Then last March she wrote a Facebook post: “Guess who I just spent a week in the studio with? Would you be pleased if I said one of them was called Steve and one of them was called Duke and another was a Grammy-winning producer?”

She was referring to guitarist Steve Marker, who now lives in Colorado with his family; and Butch Vig, the band’s drummer and a major music producer, who is currently working on a project with the Foo Fighters.

The Scottish-born Manson finally announced Garbage’s return during a lecture at the University of the West of Scotland, according to the Guardian’s website this week.

“I’m working on a record right now with the band,” she said. “We’ve recorded quite a lot but it’s difficult to quantify. We’re just winging it right now ... I took about five years off. I’d like to do some touring next year.”

Saturday, Shirley posted an interesting message on her Facebook page:

"The last day in the studio until next month. Rough mixes in process as I type.

Totally and utterly fantastic start. It feels SOOOoooo incredible to be back working on Garbage music.

It's been so long since I made NOISE!!!!!"

Garbage will definitely release a new album (sooner or later). ^_^
