It did suffer from a few ???s

Take those out and it's average mark would have been enough for #4!

EDIT: Actually no it wouldn't, if you also took out the ???s for ALL the songs. It would still only be #12 :(

I'll post the alternative version after this - there's quite a few differences!

Oh :( I guess the people who had heard it weren't big fans then. Maybe it's too dramatic and dark like you said.

My theory is more that there were some people who weren't ???s, but had only heard it a couple of times and so it got lowish marks pulling the average down. But then I probably thought about it too much!

12. Angel

[#16 in the UK charts, 2004]

(Average score: 6.31)

Their last top 20 hit :(

I still maintain this is the best Borrowed Heaven single. Despite the mournful subject matter, The Corrs took a positive spin on it, and this ended up the most energetic and upbeat track on the album. A celebration almost, and I love it. It was also their first single in YEARS that actually included proper Celtic influences :o

I love Angel  I was surprised it went top 20 at the time actually, I was expecting much worse for it :drama: To say it sounded completely out of place in the top 20 that week would be a major understatement

Sandwiched in between the 411 and Chingy, I guess yeah  Although looking at the chart that week, it did seem to be a week for oldies/MOR - Bryan Adams, Status Quo, Dido! (That Chart Stats website you linked up earlier is a goldmine!)

Top 20 that week

01. (NE) Eric Prydz - Call On Me

02. (NE) Girls Aloud - Love Machine

03. (NE) Green Day - American Idiot

04. (02) Nelly - My Place / Flap Your Wings

05. (04) JoJo - Leave (Get Out)

06. (01) Brian McFadden - Real To Me

07. (05) 3 Of A Kind - Babycakes

08. (06) Twista - Sunshine

09. (NE) Joss Stone - You Had Me

10. (03) McFly - That Girl

11. (07) Natasha Bedingfield - These Words

12. (08) Maroon 5 - She Will Be Loved

13. (09) The Pirates, Shola Ama, Enya, Naila Boss & Ishani - You Should Really Know

14. (NE) Status Quo - You'll Come Round

15. (10) The 411 - Dumb

16. (NE) The Corrs - Angel

17. (11) Houston, Chingy & Nate Dogg - I Like That

18. (NE) Razorlight - Vice

19. (16) Mousse T & Emma Lanford - Is It Cos I'm Cool?

20. (13) Goldie Looking Chain - Guns Don't Kill People, Rappers Do

21. (NE) Bryan Adams - Open Road

24. (NE) Cassidy - Get No Better

25. (NE) Annie - Chewing Gum

29. (NE) Dido - Sand In My Shoes

I've already sung its praises elsewhere but Angel is wonderful. As uplifting as Summer Sunshine with a little added depth.

It is indeed a great site. Wow, that was quite a retro week actually wasn't it :o Corrs, Bryan Adams and Dido, on the same week, MOR heaven! Looking at some of the monstrosities in that top ten though (That Girl, Babycakes, Real To Me, You Had Me, Flap Your Wings), Corrs should have been at least #11 :(

Babycakes was the WORST number one I think we had all decade. Complete DRIVEL produced by complete NON-ENTITES.

Agreed. A one hit wonder of the very worst time. Having said that, it's one of the only #1's in 2004 that would easily go to #1 if released now. I'm not sure what this says about the state of the charts in 2010 because it sure has well wouldn't have gone anywhere near the top in 2006/7/8.

11. I Never Loved You Anyway

[#43 in the UK charts, 1997]

(Average score: 6.63)

OUTRAGE. AGAIN. I Never Loved You Anyway is a masterpiece, The Corrs finding their inner-Alanis (this was produced by Jagged Little Pill supremo Glen Ballard). Bar Closer, this is easily their finest moment. An incredibly catchy chorus, energy, some attitude, and even some witty(ish) lyrics! This should have been massive!

Don't bother with the Special Edition remix though, which was not just pointless, but pure desecration, removing all the power and energy from the song! What were they thinking?!

Incidentally, this was also the only song bar the hideous Me And My Teddy bear to pick up a score of -1! From Dre. HOW?

Aww i really love this song....it should have easily been top ten! shame it missed out :(

11th :( :drama:

I really hope Breathless doesn't win this, it would be a travesty!

I reckon So Young will win. I'd be fine with that. I Never Loved You Anyway is great, not quite the 11/10 opus Shoat seems to consider it but definitely deserving of bigger appreciation than it gets (I think a lot of casual Corrs fans probably wouldn't even remember it).

I can't say too much lest I give the game away, but when I started this I was hoping neither Breathless OR So Young would win it. Both are fine, but overrated.

I can't see it. It's my second favourite Corrs song but most people aren't so fussed from when I've discussed with people. I would have thought it would be between Breathless and Dreams if I had to call it, although I'd like to hope Runaway but I guess people preferred different versions of that so it might end up #4 and #6 or something

I do agree about Breathless being overrated though, at least So Young retained celtic influence (albeit not much) in the form of the killer violin solo  Breathless could have been sung by almost any of the big early 00's pop acts.

Absolutely hated Never Loved You Anyway, really annoying song imo.

From the recent ones, only Irresistible sticks out for me, loved that song, still do. Immensely catchy and deserved to be at least as big as Breathless.

I hope So Young doesn't win, that song leaves me cold.

10. Summer Sunshine

[#6 in the UK charts, 2004]

(Average score: 7.00)

Time has proven Summer Sunshine to be a little too throwaway to really fit on what's otherwise a very intimate album I think. I like it an awful lot but it does kind of scream 'last song recorded because the album had no obvious lead single'.

And here Jark has pretty much summed up my feelings on this. Throwaway is the key word here. It's nice and light, but almost totally without substance, at odds with the rest of the Borrowed Heaven album. It's redeeming feature really was that it was a top 10 single at a time when really it had no right to be. Putting the chart geek hat on again, it's almost bizarre to see The Corrs knocking on the door of the all-urban top 5.

01. (01) Frankee - F.U.R.B

02. (02) Eamon - F*** It (I Don't Want You Back)

03. (---) Cassidy - Hotel

04. (---) The 411 - On My Knees

05. (04) Christina Milian - Dip It Low

06. (---) The Corrs - Summer Sunshine

07. (06) Anastacia - Left Outside Alone

08. (09) Maroon 5 - This Love

09. (10) The Rasmus - In The Shadows

10. (05) Avril Lavigne - Don't Tell Me

That was certainly a top ten of two halves wasn't it - urban top 5 like you say and then an Avril ballad, Corrs, Anastacia and Maroon 5 upping the radio pop/rock/MOR quota, and then some oddly huge Finnish rock hit in there as well  I loved Summer Sunshine, it reminded me more than a little of Video Killed The Radio Star in the verses, but such a triumphant song to come back with. I'm not sure Angel (or anything else on the album for that matter) would have done as well as #6 as the lead single.

Hideous top2. The rest of the top10 is pretty good, especially Cassidy, 411, Milian and Anastacia.
