they didnt ban 'admiral halsey', it was played daily, i taped it...

Really????????

From Keith Badman's The Beatles After The Break-Up (A day to day diary):

Entry Tuesday, June 1st 1971:

The BBC announces that the Ram album track "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" is banned with immediate effect due to the use of the word "bloody". Although music critics think the sentiments of the lyrics mocking British authority figures, after a campaign by the national newspaper "The Daily Mail" may have influenced the decision. This ban was not overturned until 1975.

Furthermore, in my copy of 30 Years of NME Album Charts also makes reference to the track's banning in the commentary written by Michael Gray underneath the June 1971 album charts.

it was played frquently, i know it (as a 14 year old) as much as 'chirpy chirpy cheap cheap' 'im gonna run away from you' , 'rose garden', at the time i didnt realise it wasnt a single. but the radio 1 roadshow at lunchtime did play several odd tracks... 'nine by nine' by the graham dumas festival band, 'damn fool' by exuma as well... these too failed to chart. perhaps i heard it before the ban, but heard it often enough to know it (i only listend to radio 1, and didnt buy or even hear any paul mccartney album) and tape it. it was played alot after 'another day'.

right, im at me mums, me n me sis have raided the attic and found our referances to 'admiral halsey' amongst our tapes.

we taped it (either full or in part) 4 times in the early 70's, alongside 9 by 9 , aint no mountain high enough, love is life,(ok both from 70) i dont blame you at all, and say you dont mind.... the interesting thing is that colin blunstone 'say you dont mind' was 1972, therefore 'admiral halsey' was definately played then as its on the tape alongside it, and 'i dont blame you at all' hit the charts in june 71, we only taped off radio 1 and often fought for the ownership of the tape! lol both of us made taped collections of oldies and current tracks we liked.

edit

my sister has just gone through a tape with the chart run down on it, her tape of admiral halsey was taped after this run down.... number one was t rex 'telegram sam' #1 in january 1972.... so it appears that admiral halsey wasnt banned.

^ As I was not born until 1971, I was not old enough to listen or remember listening to Radio 1 at the time so I can't comment.

However, in addition to the two literal references I have given I have a third reference: Fred Brosnan's The Billboard Book of Number One Hits which includes:

#298 Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey

.... It was a track from Paul and Linda's McCartney's Ram album, released two and a half months after the LP. It was the only single from the album, and it was not released in Britain, where it was banned by the BBC, becoming the first of three McCartney compositions to be banned within the space of 18 months (the others being "Give Ireland Back To The Irish" and "Hi Hi Hi"), where the lone track pulled from release as a 45 was "The Back Seat Of My Car" which reached number 39. .....

Lastly that Wikipedia entry is far from comprehensive. As any serious The Beatles' fan would know there is no mention of John Lennon's "Working Class Hero" or "Woman Is The n***** Of The World" on that list. Nor off the top of my head U2's "Sunday Bloody Sunday"; Sex Pistols' "Friggin' In The Riggin'; The Special AKA "The Boiler"; XTC "Dear God"; or Carter USM "Bloodsports For All (Anytime Anyplace Anywhere)".

well maybe it was a loose ban that they never actually implemented with any rigour, i had no idea that it was banned at the time as if it was i/we would simply not know it as we were chart watchers as opposed to album buyers. we listened to radio 1 daytime, we taped oldies and liked new tracks from spring 71 (when we pooled resources to buy a tape recorder) until spring 72 (when i started buying singles cos i had money). we taped 'admiral halsey' 4 times between us alongside tracks from summer 71 until early 72, so the evidence is there, dispite what any book might tell you.

I'm listening to The Best Of Dana right now. Nice bit of easy-listening from the 70's.
