Last week, selling only 12 copies determined the appearance at #100 on the official French singles chart. Just in case it was Cascada's "Evacuate The Dancefloor".

I'm not surprised. First, the level of sales is low relative to the population, more than in the UK. Second, the chart still includes only physical sales.

Usher's "OMG" sold in 58385 copies for #1 in the UK

Stromae's "Alors On Danse" sold in 12913 for #1 in France*

*3986 for #1 on main, physical only chart, and 8927 for #1 on digital chart.

Supposedly physical & digital sales will be combined in France any week now, now that we're in the Springtime (and SNEP said the combination of physical & digital would come in the Spring).

I agree though, sales in France overall need to pick up... I'm sure even the German #1 (outside of the Idol winners) can average 20K a week.

I remember around 2004/2005 when single sales in France used to be higher than the UK. How things have changed

They really need to combine physical with downloads. Not just because downloads sell more, but because there are very few CD's released in France nowadays, so it's no wonder that songs sell so little after a year in the chart with no competition

I don't know why they wait so long

Next week; 4 copies? At this rate France will end up with a top 67 by default because only 67 songs were bought on CD.

Time to add downloads, eh? No. Never mind. -_-

Really surprisingly they haven't added downloads already.

They need to bring this chart into the 21st century.

OMFG, this is ridiculous, and really sad :( Every time I went to France when I was younger I bought French CD singles. It seems I was the only one  I hope the introudction of the digital sales will gain some publicity and get France buying singles again. How are album sales lately by the way?

Wow. That's actually shocking.

So if I lived in France, I could get a few of my friends to buy a song, and it'd rise a few places up the chart.

That would depend on what stock was left? I know sales even for no. 1 in France is only something like 20k (has been known to be as low as 3k in previous years). The song at no. 100 that sold 9 copies - I wonder how many copies of that song are still available to buy in France.

Dré did post that France would finally be introducing digital sales into the main singles chart. Surely it's only a matter of time as physical sales in France are clearly horrendous.
