Obviously single sales are higher now but it's still interesting to see. :)

I agree with Jay - I really hope we can add a massive hit to this list for The Saturdays that tops Up, Higher and Ego at the top. Hopefully it'll be this year... (wishful thinking most probably...) :P

I thought it would be interesting to update this list, and also add in Little Mix, since they've been challenging The Saturdays for biggest girl group tag. All the sales listed are the last known totals (rounded to the nearest thousand) in the respective artist forums.

The Girls Aloud and some of The Saturdays figures should probably be slightly higher, but not by much, since they haven't been updated in a while.

It's funny cause these 4 are nowhere near their worst songs for either of them. :(

I think it's worth noting that sales were a LOT lower back when Girls Aloud were around, so it's not entirely fair to compare them as the sales climates are different. Love how they still manage to take up the top 2 despite that though.

Yeah, Biology and Love Machine would have probably been Gold singles if they were released nowdays. Call The Shots too, but I know that was released when sales started to increase again.

Also, between three big groups of the 21st century 11 years and 46 singles, It's pretty sad that they have only got one platinum single between them.

It's pretty incredible that The Saturdays have the most entries in the sales top 10 with 4. Girls Aloud and Little Mix both have 3 each!

Sounds legit ;)

If girls aloud is in this what about sugababes?

We could probably go on for ages making a list of the best selling girl group singles. GA and LM are probably the best ones to compare to.

What are you on? That's completely unrealistic, this is what will happen...

01 | #01 | 2014 | 1,650,000k | Not Giving Up

didn't realise some of these songs sold so much though :o You either need to remove the k after the numbers or divide each number by 1000.

Presuming I made no errors doing the calculation the average single sale for each of them is:

1, Little Mix - 261,571

2, The Saturdays - 204,313

3, Girls Aloud - 177,348

Although I'm pretty sure GA would win on the Album front, I don't have all the figures to hand right now though.

[EDIT]

1, Girls Aloud - 449,805

2, Little Mix - 268,000

3, The Saturdays - 151,834

I find it hard to count BCYLM as a single for Girls Aloud. I know it was planned as a second single and got a video but there was no EP or physical (which GA always had, without fail) official announcement of a release date, or even a tweet from the girls saying 'Get our new single BCYLM now!' I thought it got scrapped.

I know its naughty, but just to put into perspective the incredibleness of Girl Power, if you include another girl group..

I know sales were higher in the 90s, but Spice Girls' 2/3 years at their peak were a phenomenon in a way that I doubt any other girl band will probably ever be (8 platinum singles!). - Most of even the biggest bands of today would have trouble challenging their heights, even the likes of 1D or Coldplay. So I think LM/GA/TS are a much more realistic comparison.

Spice Girls.

I think comparing girl group singles sales isn't a very accurate indication of popularity (of the singles). Different times and different sales climates! :D The late 90s was one of the best times for high physical sales, and the Spice Girls' huge popularity took full advantage of that.

Girls Aloud (and the Sugababes) were pretty unfortunate to be so popular in a period when physical singles were seriously declining, and the digital market was only slowly taking off. Things on that front didn't really start improving until 2008/9 - clear to see when 'The Loving Kind' is ahead of many of Girls Aloud's other singles.

The Saturdays came onto the scene when things were on the up, so it's been relatively easier for them to achieve quite a few Silver certified singles. Little Mix came about when the digital market was really solidified, so it doesn't surprise me that they currently have the highest average. Little Mix have had three singles miss the Top 10 out of 7 releases, yet all three have outsold many Girls Aloud & Sugababes Top 3/Top 5/Top 10 singles. Arguably those GA/Babes singles were bigger hits in their day than 'How Ya Doin'?' and 'Little Me' though.

I know sales were higher in those days, but Spice Girls' 2/3 years at their peak were a phenomenon in a way that I doubt any other girl band will ever be. - Most bands in general would have trouble challenging them in those days, even the likes of 1D or Coldplay.

I know right, and single sales actually were the highest ever in 2011 - 2012 so they are definatly comparable! 1D have

WMYB - 900,000

OWOA - 469,000

Little Things - 467,000

But thats still nothing compared to Spice Girls!

And then theres the albums...

Spice Girls - Spice - 3,055,000

Spice Girls - Spiceworld - 1,900,000

One Direction - Up All Night - 1,018,000

One Direction - Take Me Home - 887,000

One Direction - Midnight Memories - 690,000

Spice Girls - Greatest Hits - 460,000

Spice Girls - Forever - 326,000

Total

Spice Girls: 5,741,000

One Direction: 2,595,000
