May 3, 201015 yr I didn't mean you directly, Severin. That said.....I do love Belfast Child. Maybe not but you were right. :D We'll have to agree to disagree on Simple Minds
May 3, 201015 yr Obviously they've had far more #1s and these songs aren't bad by any means, but how the hell did Oasis get to the top with "The Hindu Times" and "Lyla" when the three singles in between ("Stop Crying Your Heart Out", "Little by Little" and "Songbird") all missed out?
May 3, 201015 yr The thread title states awful song that made it to number 1. This is just going to turn into a list of comparatively weak songs that got to number 1. Should't we stick to awful ones.... Right Said Fred - Deeply Dippy LL Cool J - Ain't Nobody I class the above as "awful" although fair enough 'Hello' isn't bad. EDIT: I would like to mention The Jacksons though. Their only UK no. 1 being 'Show You The Way To Go'. To think, of all their classic tracks ('I Want You Back', 'ABC', 'Blame It On The Boogie', 'Can You Feel It') it was 'SYTWTG' that ended up being their only no. 1 hit. -_- Edited May 3, 201015 yr by Hitstastic
May 4, 201015 yr Erasure definitly one for me, they had some fantastic pop songs over the year and their only number 1 ended up being a cover version. Stereophonics dakota os ok but they had far better songs worthy of number 1 over it. Meatloaf although i like id do anything for love songs like id lie for you and thats the truth and dead ringer for love were more worthy of being his sole number 1. Jennifer Lopez aint it funny was more worthy of being her sole number 1 over the weak love dont cost a thing. Lisa Stansfield i hated all around the world so would have liked a different song to be her only solo number 1 such as time to make you mine, set your loving free or the real thing. Prince again the most beautiful girl in the world was ok but songs like purple rain, pasberry beret, diamonds and pearls and litt;e red corvette again were more worthy of being his sole number 1. The flip reverse of this thread for me is who only had 1 number 1 from their catalogue and it was the song that is worthy of being an acts sole number 1 belong sto Kate Bush wuthering heights, its her stand out song for me and her only number 1.
May 4, 201015 yr . The flip reverse of this thread for me is who only had 1 number 1 from their catalogue and it was the song that is worthy of being an acts sole number 1 belong sto Kate Bush wuthering heights, its her stand out song for me and her only number 1. im not so sure... yes it was a classic pop single and possible signature tune but her only good track?...
May 4, 201015 yr I can't see Deeply Dippy being being awful compared to I'm Too Sexy. Surely both are rubbish.
May 4, 201015 yr Obviously they've had far more #1s and these songs aren't bad by any means, but how the hell did Oasis get to the top with "The Hindu Times" and "Lyla" when the three singles in between ("Stop Crying Your Heart Out", "Little by Little" and "Songbird") all missed out? Because they were the first singles released off respective albums. Once the album is out indie fans traditionally don't buy the singles in such numbers. The other reason, of course, is that those three singles are all really, really horrible! The main reason for this phenomenon I think is that the band grow in popularity due to a really good single just before the release of their first and often only number one single. The number it reaches is not really the issue...the preceding single may often just reach the top 10 but hangs around the chart for up to five times longer (as it has a longer climb and a longer fall) thus selling more copies. When a band is riding on hype they will often go straight in at number one and be out of the charts within two months.
May 4, 201015 yr Jennifer Lopez aint it funny was more worthy of being her sole number 1 over the weak love dont cost a thing. J.Lo had Get Right at #1 in 2005 as well.
May 4, 201015 yr Simon and Garfunkel - BOTW isn't bad by any means, though; I guess they just deserved more #1s (certainly Mrs. Robinson and The Boxer are worthy and probably better than BOTW.) edited out non retro referances
May 5, 201015 yr please stick to RETRO, retro = prior to 2000. ive edited/deleted several posts refering to modern music.
May 8, 201015 yr Prince - The Most Beautiful Girl In The World It's not totally abismal, but in contrast to his work in the 80s (Kiss, Sing O The Times, Alphabet Street..), it is.
May 14, 201015 yr Obviously they've had far more #1s and these songs aren't bad by any means, but how the hell did Oasis get to the top with "The Hindu Times" and "Lyla" when the three singles in between ("Stop Crying Your Heart Out", "Little by Little" and "Songbird") all missed out? I do not remember "Thehindutimes" or "Songbird" and in fact, I cannot remember how any of the tracks on their last album went, which might be saying something as I only listed to that particular album about 2 weeks ago. I do not know whether it should be taken as a criticism of that album’s track listing or an indication on the current state of my memory. In regards to my memory, please take the following an example. You may remember that Thomas Dolby released a single in the late 1980s called “My Brain Is Like a Sieve”. The track was from the “Aliens Ate my Buick” album and a follow up to the “Hot Sauce” single, a fact that I remember quite easily as I have owned that album for about 20 years now. You may also remember, from another thread on this site, that I have recently bought a number of Roxy Music albums and those CDs which were bought in batches rather than purchased all at once. Unfortunately when I went back to complete the collection I had a problem where I could not remember what Roxy Music CDs I had previously bought so ended up buying Avalon twice in two weeks. Due to this I would say that rather than being comparable to a sieve, my memory these days is more like a wastepaper basket that became full of information [rubbish] in the first two decades of my life and therefore cannot hold much more. Now I mention this because I have noticed a few posts where the moderator has deleted a few 21st Century pop references from the thread and whilst it has not got to the point where I feel that the last 10 years of my musical knowledge has been deleted from my brain, it does get me wondering [as I am a fan of films with that kind of SF concept], how I would feel about certain acts if this had actually happened. I do not want to dwell on this thought for too long [though if somebody else wants to develop the idea into another thread that is fine by me] but in regards to Oasis and Stereophonics, ten years ago I would definitely would not want to be identified as a fan. It was not until “Dakota” was released that I changed my opinion about The Stereophonics and started buying their records. Until that point I regarded them as being the purveyors of dull plodding ‘dadrock’ and were a band that I generally avoided in my 20s [alongside other people such as Heavy Stereo, Ocean Colour Scene et al]. Also if the last ten years of my memory had been completely wiped, I would probably still consider myself to be a fan of The Black Eye Peas, who were a post-Fugees trio back in the mid to late 1990s and who I regarded as being quite good [my, how times have changes]. May 16, 201015 yr Sister Sledge - Frankie They had a string of CLASSIC Chic-produced classics in the late 70s, Lost In Music, He's The Greatest Dancer, Thinking Of You..... but only ever make it to the top with the corny 'Frankie'.
May 16, 201015 yr Regarding Stereophonics it was the right song that got to number 1. Similarly with Coldplay - it is good that bands get rewarded for being brave and changing their sound a bit.
May 16, 201015 yr Jamiroquai - Deeper Underground Nowhere near their best song. Virtual Insanity/Canned Heat/anything really would have been better. I really disagree! :heehee: The track is just as good as any of their other singles. Virual Insanity & Canned Heat still managed to reach Top 5, so it isn't like they where massive failures within the charts.
May 19, 201015 yr Human League I have been a fan of the Human League for nearly 30 years and I would not say that they got to Number One with the wrong song. It was the right song for the time and a record that was my favourite for many years., however after all these years, I would normally play any other track by the band, as I have got tired of hearing it. Whilst I would want to hear the original rather than any cover version, I think that, if I had the choice, I would actually play a record like “Love See No Colour” by The Farm rather than “Don’t You Want Me” by The Human League [even though the latter was a favourite record of mine] as I have not played any records by ‘Peter Hooton & co.’ in years and I think it would be nice to find their CDs again. May 19, 201015 yr i agree with euro music, imho 'dont you want me' (the only song that was #1 when i was at a gig by the band) is their poorest track from their early years. ok, it could be argued that it is a great pop song, and it is, but it was very simple, cheesy track . they did much better, in fact id suggest dywm is the worst track on 'dare'.
