I do think now is the time to draw this to a conclusion, or else it could run forever. I'd be surprised if anyone was left to vote.

Either way I don't mind, I've decided now. Where I was 55/45, it's moreso 51/49 now...the extra 4 was laziness on my part because it would be easier for me hosting if I didn't have to do semis :kink: I'm only very slightly leaning towards the big final because I liked the new points system, but I wouldn't mind having the semis back.

Hopefully this will be closed tonight and sunday the result with whatever mods decides to go.

51/49 was with me from beginning of this poll and I wanted to go with big final for the sake of always being in final and voting for 15 songs (lol did I just started to repeat myself again :kink:).

but overall I'll be satisfied with or without semis. Shontelle/Janelle if we go with semis, totally unknown with big final

I don't think I'd ever change my entry plans based on whether I had to qualify for the final or not. If everyone else doesn't like what I've chosen that's fine, I'll watch from the sidelines after I DNQ - if it's not my favourite eligible/non-cheap song at the time, I ain't sending it :smoke:

well I'm being honest that probably would never sent Nora if we were with semis last contest...no matter how much I love her.

I'm not overly fussed about which format is chosen as well, it's just, again, i don't really wish to DNQ all the time (which will happen as i always send what i love the most nowadays (let's not bring Xonia into this plz, it was just for fun without any urgent wish to qualify, which i didn't anyway )) and eventually leave because of the lack of interest. :( However it's only thoughts and assumptions and i don't really know how i will feel in the future about it.

I don't like to be the one to make a decision (especially since I can't see our mod lounge right now) but I'd be inclined to say we should just go ahead with the big final this month.

As pointed out, we've got 47 votes and it's not a tie so the 48th we're looking for can't change things. I'd encourage people to give it another go, we'll change a few things this month and if you still want to leave afterwards, tell us why and we'll see if there's anything we can do. If there's still such split feelings, we might have to channel another path. But, personally, I see the big final approach as one that gets better if we lose a few participants.

Things that should be done to make this month different:

- A recap. If possible, it'd be nice if we could go back to the days where it was down to the host to make sure there was a recap. If not, provided we get MP3s, I might be able to work something. (though I haven't started an assignment due for late June)

- Shorter voting period? I'm not sure on this one. People are saying it got too boring in here, but others are saying they can't take them in in two weeks? I don't know what the main problem was. If it's being boring, we could try generating discussion. If it's too long to vote, we could reduce the time slightly? Not sure

If that doesn't work, fine, you can go. But hopefully it'll make things more ideal for everyone.

I seriously doubt I'd have the time or materials to make a recap myself for this contest as I'll be on mobile broadband during the final week I should think, so downloading anything, either 50 MP3's or videos will be a massive no no for me. I usually love making my own recaps when I host and always have done in the past, but I would probably need somebody to do it for me this time. Any other month and I wouldn't have hesitated to do it myself though :drama: Any volunteers?

Reducing the voting period will surely cause complaints as people struggled to vote in 14 days last time, and reducing it to 10 days (which is the maximum we could really lower it to) wouldn't make that much difference in my opinon  So I'd be inclined to leave the voting window as it is at two weeks, but just try to make a more active effort to increase traffic in the forum during the voting period, with hopefully more people participating in the odds and predictas.

I'd try doing the recaps (videoless, only sound and random images), i'm not under Windows XP after all like last times when i failed miserably doing recaps :drama: Mp3's will be done definitely so count on me there btw :D

That would be much appreciated if you could Pavel  I'm not being lazy, just realistic :drama: Mobile broadband = FAIL when downloading anything more than about 10 songs or 2 videos

Well, I was told by a few that I couldn't send Eric Saade last contest, because I had to risky for the 'one big final'.

If one of these people was Pavel, ignore him. He takes the idea of 'cheap' so ridiculously far that I really wish he wouldn't try to make the call - I mean, come on, the genre of 'pop' is cheap? :/

I'm going to make a call on this one, and it's a pretty difficult decision so I'll say this now: I don't care if this decision makes you unhappy, DON'T jump on my back about it, or so help me I will go Silas on you.

In recognition of the fact that: a: it is ridiculously close between the two options, b: that the last contest was hardly the best reflection of how this will work in practice, as, for one, I was barely around to do my job and try and stimulate discussion on the contest, and c: that this option is by far the most convenient for Rich, who will be hosting, I have decided on the following:

- The one big final approach will continue on a trial basis for another contest, but with alterations - a shortened voting period and the guarantee of a recap, along with any other suggestions people wish to make.

- At the end of BJSC XXVII, another poll will be taken. If the one big final option doesn't get a majority of 55% of the votes, then we will return to the semi-finals option and see if there are any other measures we can take in order to ensure all songs get a fair chance.

You have another day to make suggestions for improvements to the one big final, after which I will close this thread and invite Rich to open the banlist.

From the complaints, it seems people have no idea what they want. They're bored if it's two weeks but don't have enough time to vote? Mind-boggling. I reckon the vast majority of people do their listening in a block of 3-6 hours in one day...

How long do you want me to shorten the voting period to? Just so I can alter my provisional dates. 10 days or 12?

Your call. 10 days is probably preferable though...

I am not going to comment on it since there'll be hell of a lot things to say and i don't feel like repeating myself for a literally thousandth time.

And to think somebody told his 'pet hate' was people not reading............

And WOO the first idea of mine was actually implemented. :kink:

I'd vote for no if I thought it would help anything (best option out of a bad bunch really) because as Rich said earlier, they'res pretty much a 50/50 split so people are going to be mad either way.

Which makes me think that neither semis or the big final is the answer....

Is there a different format out there we can actually agree on? At least with less of a divide....

Maybe we should have another trial run of a completely different format....

I don't want a '10 days is nowhere near enough time to vote for all of these songs' backlash though :drama: If you can guarantee that there will be more discussion during the voting period this time around, and not just me, Pavel and Addy talking between ourselves, I'd be more inclined to do 12 days.

What about having semis one month and a big final the other month?

What about having semis one month and a big final the other month?

Appealing, but we would quite like to have some consistency - HEAVEN knows we don't need people to start complaining that they're disadvantaged by the month that it is.

I just had a thought....

people are saying the reason they love the big final is because everyone can vote for everything.....

in that case why not take a leaf out of NSC's book (again)......

and make it so people in semi 1 can vote in semi 2 (and vice versa) as a sort of "rest jury" and a few songs (maybe 3 songs qualify due to rest jury and 10 songs qualify due to votes from the countries involved in that semi) would qualify based on the countries from the oppisite semis votes and vice versa.

How it would work is after semi 1 people vote in semi 2, the top three songs that didn't qualify as a result of the normal votes would also qualify. (and the same for semi 2 people voting in semi 1)

For example:

Semi 1 Results

------------------

1. FNT Nickodonia

2. Cadbury

3. Eledan

4. Mdice

5. Land of Jack

6. Kopecka

7. Dalisska

8. Ashton

9. Sangria

10. FSR Rontvia

----------------------Countries above the line qualify

11. Unoshake

12. Torchwood

13. Quotosibb

14. Dulpaen

15. Deandria

16. Xanaga

17. Hendenia

18. Espen

Semi 2 jury votes:

1. Kopecka

2. Espen *

3. Land of Jack

4. Mdice

5. Ashton

6. Dalisska

7. Dulpaen *

8. Torchwood *

9. Eledan

10. Hendenia

etc....

* These being the top three countries in the rest jury that haven't already qualified by normal means will also qualify along with the other ten qualifiers

Oh, I didn't mean to suggest the hosts had to make it themselves, but more of an effort to make sure one gets done by someone (if they can't) would be nice. As a last resort I can offer to help, if I get MP3s, but I don't want to end up being the one people assume will do it each month. :drama: Anyway, looks like we've got it sorted this month. ^_^

This is what I don't understand either. :( Like Tyron said, there are complaints of there being too long and it getting quiet, but there are the others saying 48 is too many to digest in the window given. :drama: Personally, I'd agree with you. Two weeks (or 12 days) should be fine. I think last month would have been quiet with or without the big final. There would have still been a lack of people giving odds and taking part in predictas. It's just being used as an excuse I think. The only missing topic would be the one where we usually predicted the qualifiers?
