July 15, 201015 yr Author 09. Wishing I Was There (6.86) (#19 in 1998) KpQB8gO5VbE Sadly we will have to make do with the audio, as YouTube in it's wisdom has blocked the video from embedding. Quite why when the other videos are freely available is not apparant. This was another of Natalie's many, many chart disappointments - barely scraping into the top 20 on the back of two #2 hits and at a time when Natalie's profile was at it's peak. It wasn't even suffering from poor promotion. If I remember right, this got tons of airplay, being perfectly designed for commercial radio as it was in 1998, the age of The Corrs, Savage Garden, Texas, Sheryl Crow and other champions of MOR. I suppose this track could be seen as a bit lightweight and throwaway, but it does have a certain Aussie charm and Natalie sounds feistier here than on other recordings.
July 15, 201015 yr Wishing I Was There should be higher too :( Chances are likely this is now what the majority of my posts in this thread will consist of, me complaining about the results. I refuse to accept Glorious, Want, Smoke or Big Mistake as better records than it or That Day.
July 16, 201015 yr Wishing I Was There is easily one of her most underrated. I don't even remember how much I like it myself until I play it.
July 16, 201015 yr It is a very good song, some of the lyrics are a tiny bit questionable but I adore it all the same.
July 18, 201015 yr Author 08. Glorious (7.26) (#23 in 2007) PCJc6nbfZhs I was kind of surprised to see this place above the likes of Wishing I Was There and Beauty On The Fire really. I don't think this is really one of Natalie's most critically acclaimed releases - it is quite lightweight and fluffy and totally throwaway. On first listen. However having listened to this a tad more often in recent weeks, I have kind of rediscovered it. It's actually quite refreshing to hear Natalie on a track that's out-and-out joy as opposed to her usual angst and sober reflections. The switch to the more upbeat sound on Come To Life was already in progress.
July 18, 201015 yr Glorious is one of these songs that I always critisize for being dull and bland, but then I listen to it again and I actually quite love it :(
July 18, 201015 yr Author Glorious is one of these songs that I always critisize for being dull and bland, but then I listen to it again and I actually quite love it :( That's exactly it. It's one of those songs that's really easy to dismiss. Until you hear it, and it is just quite joyous. I regret giving it a measly 6. It's at least a 7.5. On the other hand, if I had, it would have put it on a tie for 7th with a song I DO think is better...
July 18, 201015 yr 'Glorious' grew on me a bit afterwards but it's still one of her poorest singles. I'd probably even say the poorest if it wasn't for 'That Day'.
July 20, 201015 yr Author 07. Smoke (7.33) (#5 in 1998) w4Fs5h3LpKk Given this was a (rare) top 5 hit for Natalie, I am sort of surprised at the more lukewarm reaction to this. Admittedly it did drop out of the chart like a stone (if I recall it didn't even manage a month in the top 40) and probably ended up selling less than even Want but still... I like this. I'm not convinced it was really single material, but it brought her back into the limelight after the relative flop of Wishing I Was There, and I'm not sure what else was left on the album to release. It's one of Natalie's darkest moments, and accompanied with a stun-gorge video and some vulnerable vocals from Nat, this makes for a stunning track. Even if it wasn't Torn Part II that the commercial radio stations were looking for.
July 20, 201015 yr Author Smoke is okay, nothing too special but Glorious is FAAANTABULOUSO! No no. Smoke is HAUNTING  In a very good way. Do get it right please.
July 20, 201015 yr Author 06. Counting Down The Days (7.48) (#23 in 2005) qHBxX0zRBcQ I'm glad this has outperformed it's chart position here. Although Glorious was Natalie's first proper "joyous" single, Counting Down The Days was a precursor. Although it starts off with her usual morose and angsty verses, the choruses are a pure delight. Very uplifting, and I love the percussion particularly.
