I love how people here can criticise somebody by saying "one-trick pony", but when somebody says it about their favourite person they get defensive. Honestly, Mary and Cher are both great, but I do think they are one-trick ponies. If both can break out of their sound (Mary: ballad sound / Cher: r&b sound), then that's great, but I doubt they will.

So if we go by singing a different song makes you versatile, then Mary is just as diverse because she sang a Lady Gaga song? :heehee: No, it doesn't make you diverse if you make all of the songs you sing sound the same. Diverse would be Cher singing cabaret or a heavy metal. Right now she has one sound. Nothing wrong with that, but it's hardly fair to criticse others of being "one-trick" and then defend somebody you like who clearly isn't diverse [at the moment].

The reason I am defending Cher is because singing Viva La Vida is different. YES, she did add R&B/Hip Hop to it, however, note how she actually sang the song aswell - which shows her diversity, she chose to sing to a Coldplay song, aswell as rap it, which shows diversity. I don't see how Turn My Swag On and Viva La Vida sounded at all similar, just because she added a bit of R&B and rapping to it.

I know that, but it's the adding of the R&B that I have a problem with. It's all very good for a couple of songs, but if she does that for twelve weeks then it really doesn't show her as versatile. She needs to sing other songs without adding an R&B sound, because it all becomes a bit monotone and boring after a while. As I said before, I like her, but she needs to do something else, and the same goes for Mary.

I can see where you're coming from, however, I now think she'll get slated if she doesn't add an R&B sound. This isn't disagreeing with you by the way, but I can see people being disappointed if she just leaves a song normally, now that's she got her 'niche' if you know what I mean.

She didn't write that bit of the song like she said she did. Its taken from a Swizz Beatz song called "That Oprah"

Ooh, I didn't realise that, but it does make more sense now. I like how in depth her R&B taste is. Both "That Oprah" and the "Turn My Swag On" remixes she did are from mixtapes, which is quite creative and risky for an X Factor audition. Hardly anyone knows these songs. Saying she wrote her own lyrics is a bit deceptive, but going for something obscure beats covers of things like "Sweet Child O'Mine", "The First Time...", "Stop Crying Your Heart Out". etc.

I don't know if this is aimed at me, but I do think that makes them versatile. It's not necessarily about being an R&B artist one week, cabaret the next and heavy metal the week after. It's about being able to make songs your own and create your own sound. No one needs to hear Cher do cabaret (though I'm sure she could) or Mary do urban. That's not going to be on their albums. I do think taking a Coldplay song and putting an urban spin on it shows a bit of diversity. (or perhaps creativity, though the point is moot if she ripped it from Swizz Beatz in the end.) I really don't like the X Factor viewer definition of 'diversity'. If anything, it's singing karaoke covers in different styles each week that I find more boring than someone covering songs with their own spin on it. It seems people would have rather seen Cher/Mary sing their songs note to note to the original. Yeah, because that's definitely more exciting. I'd sooner see a 'one trick pony' putting their stamp on a song over a more 'diverse' singer singing in a different style each week to match the theme.

I wouldn't mind if she has a few weeks of R&B-style and the rest different, because that's showing that she can be diverse but still maintain her sound, but I just don't want it all to be the same.

It was aimed at everybody who says Cher is diverse despite not seeing her perform anything out of the R&B genre. I obviously have a different perception of what diverse is. You can have your own sound (which Cher has) and still prove that you can do a power ballad or a cabaret act. I'm not saying that Cher has to do a cabaret act or a heavy metal act, they were just examples to help my point, but I would find it rather boring and monotone if Cher had R&B sound every week, and I'm sure people would say the same about Mary having a ballad sound to every song she sings.

I like Diva Fever, but they can't sing that well. :(
I love Diva Fever, they would make camp music better than SS, but they can't sing

Justin also seams very good

Twem are like a much better version of John and Edward

I like Wagner, he would me much better on BGT rather than XF though.

This Katie girl can't half sing :o

Less annoying than her audition performance. You just know the ones who will go through right to the live stages ... Simon's lawyers wouldn't have arranged for her to get out of the recording contract she had unless he didn't want her in the finals. Cher wipes the floor with her though.

I like Diva Fever ... but why, oh why so unoriginal with their song choices ... I wanted them to sing something like Sparke's This Town Ain't Big Enough ... they look the part.

Rebecca Ferguson is the best so far. I hope she continues to the live shows!
Rebecca  great vocals, great performance... but she needs confidence if she makes the final 3

If it was just on vocals ... Rebecca is 100% better than anyone else in this competition (in fact ... through X-F 1-7). Fabulous pure Blues voice ... much more mature than her age.

Kath

Gamu is the one to watch, a dark horse in the comp, her performance was flawless, it gave me goosebumps listening to it.

I would definitely buy her winning single over Cher
