Ever wondered what the UK chart would look like if we did it a bit like they do it in the USA, combining sales & airplay. Well each week, I will post what the chart would look like if it combined the top 40 on sales, top 40 on Radio Airplay & top 40 on TV Airplay [40pts to #1 of each chart down to 1pt to #40 of each chart].

Chart Mods: M!key has given me permission to do this :)

sometimes think it be better to have elements of airplay in the chart, especially when records are 'held' back for ages after first appearing on the radio.

but some artists dont get radio support so they wont do very well. Americas chart is stupid you can sell huge amounts and not make number 1

I'd like a bit of airplay, because that would stop songs debuting at #1. But some artists (Gabriella Cilmi & Lemar are two recent examples that spring to mind) don't get airplay on Radio 1, but still get top 10, whereas they probably wouldn't if airplay was included.

But I hope people will like looking at this every week, to compare, and see how much difference airplay would make. If anyone thinks of any ways I can improve it, feel free to leave suggestions :)

US Hot 100 chart is what it is, airplay led.

the digital chart is better gauge of whats selling and #1.

as for the relevant comment on this chart - many acts get too much support on the TV airplay.

i'd have thought TV airplay should have less points?

40-40-20 (sales-radio-tv) perhaps?

This method is not accurate at all. The US chart does not award points according to positions, they add actual sales to the total audience impressions. Why don't you do it that way?

Cowell's pet acts, for example - and charity records - so it wouldn't be all bad...

I will do that when I post charts in the future, and I might find the sales/airplay charts for last week, work them out, and edit the first post to include positions last week.

This method is not accurate at all. The US chart does not award points according to positions, they add actual sales to the total audience impressions. Why don't you do it that way?

I said I was doing a bit like the American way, not exact, I know how they do actually do it. I would do it that way, only we don't always get exact sales for every song in the top 40.

I like this but the last two colours are too similar, can you change one of them?

Yes, I suppose so

First post has been updated to include where they would've been last week.

40-40-20 (sales-radio-tv) perhaps?

I will consider that, but in a way, I want everything to have an equal weight to the combined chart. It's still weighted slightly towards sales, as if there's a tie for total amount of points, the higher song is the one which appears on more charts (sales/radio/tv), and if there is still a tie, the higher song in the one with more sales.

Jack (i'm guessing that's your name BGF) would it be OK if I did a more accurate version of your chart with my sales estimates tomorrow?

If you want to do that every week, you can :) Both methods for combining the three charts are good, so it may be good to compare the one I do every week with the one you do, and also compare both with the official chart
