June 22, 201015 yr I didn't even know it was getting a release. In fact, the extent of it's chart success worldwide so far is pretty unexpected. It seems to have charted purely from word of mouth, I don't think it was ever confirmed as the second single, it's got no video and no airplay. It's simply doing well because it's Eminem and Rihanna. I underestimated it. There wasn't even that much hype about it on here when the album leaked, even as a Rihanna track. I knew the album was released this week, if I thought it'd be top 3 on our iTunes midway through the voting (and possibly climbing) I wouldn't have sent it. I felt a bit sick when I logged into Buzzjack last night and saw this was in the iTunes top 10, I hadn't been following it's success. I almost feel like withdrawing from this contest, but I've been a part of every final since I've joined, I can't. Hopefully people will vote for the discoveries and not leave Rich with a totally predictable final. Oh come on Aaron - I'm not calling on for you to withdraw or anything, but your naivety on this is coming across a bit fake. Superstar collaboration and you didn't think it would be a single, or at least a massive cherry-pick success?
June 22, 201015 yr Which bit? :heehee: That's what I was wondering! If it's anything I've said Addy, I'm sorry. No worries though...this'll be the last contest I participate in, as I'll be away for the next one and can't reeealy be bothered to join again afterwards. :magic:
June 22, 201015 yr Which bit? :heehee: 1. obviously the part where people prefers to vote for the songs that are acclaimed that they had no clue they're going to be BIG...as nobody in this world will care about when it comes to Eminem and Rihanna  2. after you want so bad to sent a song that will guarantee and secure a top 3 then please don't come here and post like you are ashamed and feel bad about it.
June 22, 201015 yr Author I didn't even know it was getting a release. In fact, the extent of it's chart success worldwide so far is pretty unexpected. I really wouldn't worry about it Aaron, I'm not  A lot of people have pointed out that they feel that it's a weak contest, so maybe there actually aren't any discoveries that people would rather vote for. What will be will be, if it wins then fair enough, people liked it more than everything else on offer. And maybe people will be discovering it through the contest, like Cremey said, it's selling on word of mouth with no video play or airplay and is blocked all over Youtube, so the only other way to hear it at the moment is to basically buy it. I reckon a lot of its sales are coming from curious downloaders who can't access the track elsewhere and just think 'sod it, I'll pay the 99p for it and if I don't like it I haven't wasted much money'.

June 22, 201015 yr Oh come on Aaron - I'm not calling on for you to withdraw or anything, but your naivety on this is coming across a bit fake. Superstar collaboration and you didn't think it would be a single, or at least a massive cherry-pick success? Well I thought it sounded like a potential single, but I wasn't sure it'd get a release. He doesn't seem the sort to resort to Rihanna for a hit single. As said, I expected it to go about #20-40 on release week at best. It's success from cherry picking was impossible to gauge. At least with the likes of "Airplanes", "Blah Blah Blah" etc. the parent albums had been released in other countries first, to give us some sort of idea. This is getting a worldwide release this week, there was no looking at it's performance in other countries to go by.
June 22, 201015 yr tbh Aaron entering Eminem/Rihanna is like loopholing the banlist, the banlist was done when it leaked but if it wasnt it wouldnt of been a definate banlist addition. BOYCOTT QUOTOSIBB!
June 22, 201015 yr Speaking of cheapness :kink: USoJ's video has been taken down and there doesn't seem to be another working one... of course, everyone should have the mp3 now but still :/
June 22, 201015 yr Oh can people just give it a rest with the whole cheap/non cheap thing. It's supposed to be a bit of fun, but people on here take it soooo f***ing seriously and suck all the fun out of it. We're voting on the quality of songs, yeah it's good if they're a discovery, but that's just a bonus.

June 22, 201015 yr well as long as no one can stop people from sending songs that = top 3, also no one can stop me having my opinion...and yeah it sucks all the fun of it for me when I see such a songs gets entered. Tbh, it's a VERY rare occurance when a cherry picked album track rockets into the itunes top ten, usually they end up around 30-40. Rihanna may well be classed as 'cheap' but I think she's yet to produce a 'hit' in Bjsc. As for Eminem, you could probably count the fans he has in this contest on one hand. The song is also a slow song, which notoriously aren't THAT successful on here either. Also, as others have mentioned, it's blocked from youtube, has no airplay or video, the only way you're likely to here this song, this week is by buying it, or through this. As for Flo-Rida/David Guetta. Since when has FLO-RIDA been cheap?! People are getting so worked up over TWO songs, if they really distress you that much, over the other like 47 entries, don't listen to them.
June 22, 201015 yr BJSC as a whole is getting near on ridiculous these days. I wouldn't say this is a manifestation of BJSC ridiculousness, at least anywhere near the level of people threatening to leave the contest over the new format which they dislike 'because they just do'. This is something which would (rightly, IMO) have gotten complaints at any point in the last twenty or so contests. As a general point (not just to you Casey), I wouldn't say that discoveries are 'just a bonus' of the BJSC - the entire point of the BJSC is fun through discoveries, otherwise what's the point? You might as well just go to the Multichart or something. It's kind of self-defeating when something that would've easily made the banlist two weeks before just swans in and pretty much has the winner's spot tied up, as it just sends out the message to those hungry for success that, if they want a win, they just need to cherry-pick something that looks like a smash just after the banlist closes rather than bother looking for anything new. I realise this wasn't Aaron's aim, but it does inevitably lead to more people just thinking 'what's the point?' to the whole idea of looking for discoveries. The banlist has thankfully reduced this (and for the life of me I still can't understand quite why people object to it when it's clearly opened up the contest a lot more and taken the predictability of the whole thing out of the equation), but as Roll Deep and (possibly) Eminem show, it's all too easy to get around. I'm not calling for anything more to be done (and think that anything beyond what we have now would be self-defeating), but surely people can see how it could be frustrating when someone sends something that is an obvious smash hit and then plays dumb and acts like they never knew when it takes off. Thankfully it's not particularly widespread, but it's still something that leaves a sour taste in the mouth.

People are getting so worked up over TWO songs, if they really distress you that much, over the other like 47 entries, don't listen to them. I don't particularly care that much with the Flo Rida/David Guetta song, it's more the Eminem/Rihanna obvious smash hit taking off, like, NOW, that annoys me. I've never really bought the argument of 'if you don't like it, don't listen to it/vote for it'. Yeah, you can say that, but at the end of the day the vast majority of people don't and you end up with ridiculous results like Jai Ho going top five or something like that. Thankfully, as I said, this doesn't really happen anymore due to the banlist, but it kinda makes a mockery of the whole thing if people just go ahead and send stuff that would obviously have been banned by it had it had the chance...

Thankfully it's not particularly widespread, but it's still something that leaves a sour taste in the mouth. Obviously a discovery of a new through this contest is a main aim; but I don't see by having one 'cheap' song is going to make it any less of a discovery to someone? So what if it ends up 6th instead of 5th because a 'cheap' song beat it? People have still found it an enjoyable song and voted for it. Imo, by having a small amount of 'cheap' song in a contest makes it more exciting, especially when your song does better than that said cheap song.
June 22, 201015 yr With cheapness benefiting a contest though, it's about levels (I'm very aware I'm about to plunge into something which people are likely to use to make ridiculous accusations *cue Pavel labelling the pop genre cheap*): I don't really see how stuff like Love The Way You Lie, or Love Story, or Jai Ho, really benefit the contest. Take something like Home though - something semi-cheap which a few people will have heard and still poses a big threat. In cases like those, I'm not particularly pleased if they win (well, we did go about half a year until Halcyon with winners like that), but I can see the case for them. I don't really see how something that would very blatantly have made the banlist with several votes to spare can be defended as improving the contest though - yeah, it increases the thrill if you beat them, but odds are nobody will beat them!

At the end of the day, if one person makes a discovery from the Eminem/Rihanna I would deem that a success. Personally, I only listened to the song once or twice, due to being a Rihanna fan, before it was entered into this, and through it being in this contest it has made me enjoy/like the song a lot more than I did. I'm one of the people who chooses not to vote in the ban list, my reason behind this is because I feel people should have the choice to send a song they wish to. Also, as I said earlier, it gives a better satisfaction to people who have made a bit more effort, when they do in fact beat them. With cheapness benefiting a contest though, it's about levels (I'm very aware I'm about to plunge into something which people are likely to use to make ridiculous accusations *cue Pavel labelling the pop genre cheap*): I don't really see how stuff like Love The Way You Lie, or Love Story, or Jai Ho, really benefit the contest. Again, I wouldn't particularly call Kelis (generally not liked) a semi-cheap entry, but meh, I don't want to get into a debate about that too. With the exception of 'Robots In Love' and 'Not A Love Song' I would say most winners have been semi-cheap since 'Will You Remember Me Tomorrow', from your view point. With the examples you've used, such as 'Love Story' and 'Jai Ho' - surely Eminem/Rihanna is likely to go the same way (if not worse), consdering the genre of song and the involvement of rap compared to VERY-BJSC friendly genre that 'Love Story' and 'Jai Ho' fall under.
