Prince will once more give away his new album for free with a national newspaper, after agreeing a deal with the Daily Mirror and Daily Record.

More than 2.5m copies of 20Ten will be given away with the two papers on Saturday July 10, the only place in the UK and Ireland where the album will be available at that time.

To coincide with the promotion, the papers will run an interview with the artist, as well as a series of Prince-themed features.

Kiran Sharma of Kikit, Prince’s representative and producer of his live shows, says, “The Most Beautiful Girl In The World in 1995 was Prince’s first number one selling single as a completely free artist.

“Fifteen years on, Prince is demonstrating that in 2010 it is still possible for artists to work in an independent and innovative capacity, highlighted here in a world first of delivering the new album across multiple territories, through complementary distribution channels.”

Prince gave away his previous album, Planet Earth, with the Mail On Sunday in 2007.

I can understand giving away one album if the intenntion is to expand your fanbase - but having done so, it seems daft not to try & take advantage of that with your next.

Yes, but as Prince wrote, produced and performed all his own material from his halycon days in the 1980s to early 1990s he has picked up millions in royalties so does not need the cash quite as much as other artists.

Plus with his status as one of the greatest live acts and biggest concert draws of all time he can guarantee making a lot more money from touring; then add his legendary anti-piracy stance where he does not like his songs uploaded onto the likes of youtube; then why not instead make the music available via exclusive newspaper deals.

Makes mental note to buy the Daily Mirror Saturday week.

I really appreciate his clever ways to promote because, let's face it, he won't have big commercial hit albums in current climate. Touring and these kind of marketing strategies do wonders.

But most of all, I wish he did more pop again...Like 3121 and Musicology...those are great albums and criminally underrated. His two previous albums have been quite funky and weird.

Well he has to do something - he hasn't a hope in hell of selling many copies!

You can have my copy of the CD - I'm definitely not a Prince fan...

I didn't want to be the first to say that. :P

Are you kidding? He has one of the most reliable and loyal fanbases when it comes to selling albums (along with the Pet Shop Boys et al), and I think 21 sold out shows at the 02 in 2007 reinforce that he isn't exactly completely washed-up, even if he isn't making world-beating albums anymore (Planet Earth was a pretty dodgy affair but 3121 in 2006 was still a fantastic album) - let's not forget that 3121 still went top ten!

Anyway, this news pleases me greatly. My only problem last time was that he chose the Daily Mail...
