Better than the 7-1 and 6-3 against England in the 1950s then. And their appearance in a World Cup final. I think we know which of the two Neville brothers got the brains.

Are you suggesting that Gary Neville has any brains? I'd be surprised if he's heard of Hungary!

A decent game tonight, everyone did alright bar Rooney who was poor I think. Crap on his own and crap with a partner, it says something when Gerrard plays much better 'in the hole' when it's behind Bobby Zamora. Lamaprd was average, Dawson was unlucky. Gibbs and Johnson were very promising. Jagielka and Young played well. Barry did the simple things well. Very pleasing.

Gary Neville has got far more brains than his brother. Yes, Rooney was pretty poor apart from a very good finish when he was just offside. Dawson made a mistake for the "goal" but should have been judged to have redeemed himself by clearing Jagielka's touch off the line. Still, that "goal" seemed to give England a bit of a kick up the arse to get them going again. Gerrard's celebration after his first goal was very reminiscent of "that night in Istanbul".

I didn't watch the game, but from what i've heard/read it sounds to me like Rooney needs to be dropped.

Just proved 4-4-2 is a dead formation. Gerrard is far far better in a central role (although I still say his best position was on the right...). Pleased for the guy, as he's taken a lot of stick of late, but rightly so after his worst season ever.

To be fair to Rooney, the support he needs is just not there in England. When he's playing for United, he has players around him in the right positions that he knows where they're going to be toserve him and for him to serve them, as was demonstrated in the Community Shield after his dreadful summer. He just needs a decent surroudning to play well.

That's one of the consequences of drawing the team from so many different club sides. Most of the Spanish side in the World Cup were from Barcelona with most of the rest from Real Madrid. England's defence in S Africa was awful. But when the England back four plus the goalkeeper were pretty much the same as the Arsenal back four and goalkeeper, it was much better because it was a group of players used to playing together.
