The crowd surged, fans screamed, security was tight. It had all the hallmarks of a big concert - but Delta Goodrem was simply signing autographs at a Big W.

She appeared yesterday at the Macquarie Centre in North Ryde to promote the lingerie brand Delta By Anabella, part of a business she has forged with designer Bruno Schiavi.

More than 600 fans turned out to see the 21-year-old, fresh from her performance at the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony.

Although her song Together We Are One left a strong impression on many TV viewers, she does not intend to release it as a single - leading some music critics to speculate that she may have missed out on a potential No. 1.

But the success of Goodrem's lingerie line has at least boosted the Aria winner's personal fortune. Such was her eagerness yesterday to spruik her brand that fans, including girls as young as seven, were asked to buy a piece of lingerie before getting an autograph.

And while she vowed to meet every fan who had turned up at Big W, those with lingerie got first priority.

Among the hundreds of screaming girls was a male fan, Chris Middleton, 30, from Guildford, who was bemused by staff urging the crowd to buy bras or G-strings. "I said to them, 'What happens if you're a guy?' " he said. "They told me to buy something for my girlfriend - but I'm gay."
