I predict

3 Bill Haley

2 FGTH

1 KOL

KOL may have only had 9 (not 8) weeks top 10 but had another 20 weeks between 11 and 20.

Edited by ~ braysephone ~

Ok guys we have our top 3. Which order do you think it will be out of these -

Bill Haley & Comets - Rock Around The Clock (57 weeks on chart with 20 of them in the top 10)

Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Relax (59 weeks on chart with 22 of them in the top 10)

Kings of leon - Sex on fire (85 weeks on chart with only 8 of them in the top 10)

Pick your top 3 ................

85 weeks for Kings Of Leon. :o They owe a lot to The X Factor for giving 'Sex On Fire' that second lease of life last year. That said, the song never gets boring for me. Everytime I hear the opening riff, I'm completely hooked on the song.

I'll predict:

3rd - Relex

2nd - Rock Around The Clock

1st - Sex On Fire

Frankie Laine not number 1?! :o I guess the fact it went after it left the top 10 affected it

I predict:

2nd: Rock Around The Clock

1st: Sex On Fire :o

When 'I Believe' was charting in 1953 there was only a top 12 so we definitely overestimated this tracks chances.

Even I thought it was Kings on Leon. I counted it up 3 times and got the same answer.
Still insane that KOL are there - only need a week at #57 or higher to take the lead, something which I'm sure could happen eventually.

'Rock Around The Clock' did it!!! :o I don't think anybody even thought of this song when the countdown started as a possible #1. Kudos to Bill Hailey, but also to Kings Of Leon.

'Sex On Fire' is still selling relatively well two years on from its release so it could easily make up those 17 points in the future.

Wow at Bill Haley- I never thought he could do it, but that is a mighty chart run so well done him I guess :D I think SOF could well overtake if it shoots up again due to X factor or something

Thanks for doing this Dannyboy, was very interesting

So Kings Of Leon came 2nd in both of the countdowns. How absolutely great. -_-

I was sure that when I added up Kings Of Leon I got over 3,500 but on recounting it I too got 3330.

To be honest, I can definitely see KOL overtaking Bill any day soon, can't be long before SOF gets another big boost back into the top 75... might actually get back in there this week based on its performance on iTunes (currently #79) but it'll be low top 75 anyway which won't be enough to overtake the 17 point lead Bill Haley has.

Amazing job, Dannyboy!

Based on this, Lady Gaga is the biggest star ever after 1 1/2 albums :P

I might post something about this in my blog as I did with the countdown of no. 2s

Its pretty cool that people would use my information in blogs. Thanks.

  • 4 weeks later...

Sorry to bump this.

Sex On Fire is now 6 points closer to Bill Haley. Re-entered at #70 this week.

It is silly to base who is the 'Biggest Act' on such Lists. Downloads make sure

that many Hits hang around for ages & ages, these days. (Lady GaGa is just a

big Act in the Download Era - The Beatles, ABBA, Queen, Bee Gees etc. would

have been in the Singles Charts for far longer, had they had Downloads to assist

them).

Old Hits had to depend on actually being available in the Shops. Downloads

are there 24/7 - 365 Days a Year - no wonder so many 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009

etc. Hits are in the Charts for Months & Months.

We may as well say that 'I Believe', by Frankie Laine, was the biggest UK No.1

ever - 18 Weeks at No.1, 36 Top 10 Weeks - both more than any other UK No.1.

But, it had low Sales, as Singles Sales were low in 1953.

Downloads also distort what is biggest in UK Chart History.

It is OK for 'fun', to compile these Lists - but, we will find that more & more

Hits from this 'Era' fill the Lists, until only a minority of pre-2006 No.1's will get

a look in, when Points are added up. This is already happening.

This countdown isnt to determine who is the biggest act. Its to show the most successful songs based on their chart run. I persoanlly think its very interesting. You obviously dont.

Dannyboy - at no time did I say that I do not find your Lists interesting.

I said that such Lists are 'fun'.

I did say that they do not work as regards gauging the most popular Acts or Hits.

I do my own Lists. I do mine for Fun. But, mine gauge things like the Acts with

the most No.1 Weeks, Top 5 Weeks, Top 10 Weeks, & so on - in Chart History.

You get a better idea of success that way, than making Lists of individual Hits.

You - obviously - put a lot of work into your Lists.

They are interesting - I never said that they are not.

Have you thought of working out the No.1 & No.2 Albums on the same basis?

That would be interesting too.

Im actually in the middle of doing something like that but on a bigger scale. Im sure your list would be very interesting too. I suppose its depends how you individually regard success, some base it on weeks at number 1, highest position or chart run. It would be very interesting to see your countdown. You should do one.
