Good point. In 2008 we saw tracks like 'No Air' and 'Disturbia' rocket up the UK charts and as such went on to become steady sellers - I'm sure both those songs have sold better than some of this years UK #1 singles - and that's with singles sales improving year-on-year. 2010 has reverted back to 2000; it's the biggest promotional campagin that gets you to no. 1, not the quality of the song itself. -_- We also the unusual situations where thanks to songs being added to iTunes prematurely, we ended up with Sugababes rocketing 35-01 and Pink rocketing 38-1 - something that will definitely not be happening in 2010.

I hated that happening  People looking back in 50 years will think 'what on earth happened in that 7 day period to make the song shoot up like that', whereas the true answer is that they only had 24 hours worth of sales whilst everything else had a week - not really a great story. Much more interesting would be Telephone by Lady GaGa and Beyonce going 12-1, with the reason being that the (great) video had come out - it was just as readily available the week it was #1 as it had been the week before - hence the more interesting chart story imo. I still think that great climbs like that can still happen in 2010 - it was the same with No Air and Disturbia (video coming out/increased airplay) as it has been this year with the likes of Rude Boy, If We Ever Meet Again, and this week Higher by The Saturdays - all registering huge climbs properly, because there is genuinely increased interest, and not artificially because of late availability like with Pink and Sugababes.

And Yolanda :P

Definitely Yolanda Be Cool. One of my fave music videos of 2010.

2007 I really liked, it was 2008 I had the problem with, with the countless 4/5 weeker #1's where you know at least three of those were by default - I have no idea how Now You're Gone managed a five week stint at the top

I honestly thought Adele 'Chasing Pavements' was guaranteed to be no. 1 upon its release but it stalled at no. 2 for three weeks instead. To prove how much lower sales were in early January 2008 compared to now, these are the weekly sales figures for 'Now You're Gone'.

13.01.08 Basshunter Now You're Gone 35,112

20.01.08 Basshunter Now You're Gone 47,930

27.01.08 Basshunter Now You're Gone 43,841

03.02.08 Basshunter Now You're Gone 38,356

10.02.08 Basshunter Now You're Gone 35,739

Already has. Fireflies went 50-2-1 because of a 'premature' release (although it was more a case of the proposed release date being far too late)

Only had 'Fireflies' gone 50-01 it would've been the case. A song climbing 2-1 isn't quite the same.

2007-2010>2006 automatically because there were no Westlife number 1s. :D

'The Rose' was no. 1 in 2006 :P and Westlife didn't have a no. 1 last year. Apparantly Westlife are "back and looking freshed" so they could still get another karaoke classic to no. 1 before the year is out.

Hence why Doctor Blind said that 2007-2010 was automatically better than 2006 for that very reason. Although as awful as it was, it was surely no worse than 'The Club Is Alive' :puke:

...doh!! I misread 2007-2010>2006 as "2007>2010>2006. :drama: :( Every year there's a ghastly UK #1 single. I don't think the UK can ever go 12 months without having some absolute dirgefest topping the charts. Even looking back at some of the UK #1s in this thread from over the last 50 years, some of those chart toppers are hidious. :(
