25 Arcade Fires - Rebellion (Lies) (2005 UK#19)

The 4th single from last year's fantastic critically acclaimed debut album "Funeral" from this Canadian band suggests great things for the future.

I'll comment on the whole chart when it's complete but I'll show my admiration for this now. I did one of these earlier this year. It's my 4th favourite song ever, and Funeral is also my 4th favourite album ever. Fantastic band! :D

05 Duran Duran - Ordinary World (1993 UK#6, US#3)

[flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ud31JWsyxGw.swf

The best Pop Band since 1980 IMHO. This performance is taken from the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize awards with the original 1980-85 line up. So Andy Taylor is doing Warren Cucurullo's guitar parts.

This song proved that Duran Duran were far, far more than "just another boyband" © Simon Cowell (& as they were regarded in the 1980s). I'd liked to see Westlife come up with anything a tenth as good as this - A song about when sh1t is happening how you would settle for an average or ordinary day.

04 The Smiths - There Is A Light That Never Goes Out (1992 UK#25)

[flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YWp6zWnJLg.swf

The greatest Indie Rock band.... EVER! This song from their career highlight 1986 The Queen Is Dead album, was voted #1 in 1986s John Peel Show festive 50 & was released as a single six years later. Morrissey is the greatest lyricist that Britain has ever had IMHO, and his lyrics perfectly offset Johnny Marr's instrumentation.

My favourite track of the 1980s from my favourite female artist. This was her (then) comeback single taken from her best album Hounds Of Love. Recently Placebo did a decent cover of the song, and it has been rumoured that a certain Australian has recorded a cover of this song as a forthcoming B-side.

02 The Beatles - A Day In The Life (1967 Never a single)

This is the final track on 1967s Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band - a John track with the bridge provided by Paul. Only this year Mojo magazine done a poll of 500 musicians/music writers/DJs to come up with their personal Top20 Beatles songs to come up with a more definitive list than "Joe Public". This song came out in 1st place.

01 David Bowie - Life On Mars? (1973 UK#3)

[flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ueUOTImKp0k.swf

This song taken from 1971s Hunky Dory featuring the legendary Rick Wakeman on piano was David's attempt at writing a (Frank Sinatra's) My Way. Obviously he did far, far better than that. In short David Bowie is Britain's greatest Pop/Rock Icon that this nation has ever produced. The material he came up with in the 1970s through to 1980 is little short of brilliant.

Just want to say thisispop, how awesome this thread is. Your selections, videos and write up.

I have no idea how you go about creating an all time list. The idea seems to vast that I wouldn't know where to start.

Love your #1 but heard it very rarely, I'm to young to have heard much before 1975, unless my family bought it or it was later on a compiliation album I bought.

Kate Bush :wub: Love her also.

08 Vitamin C - Graduation (Friends Forever) (1999 UK Flop!, US #4)

I to this day, do not understand how this gigantic US hit single / college anthem failed to chart in the UK. Still at least Andy McCluskey (ex-OMD), has admitted he took inspiration from the song to write the very similar (& massive UK#1) Whole Again for Atomic Kitten.

:o First time I heard this, but it's really good. :dance:
