Posted September 29, 201014 yr Which is more popular in the UK? Rugby union or league? north = league south = union but overall?
October 26, 201014 yr In the United Kingdom, rugby union or rugby league fans rarely refer to their sport as "football" as in most cases this would refer to association football. Across the UK, rugby union is usually referred to simply as 'rugby' but in and around the rugby league heartlands in the North of England, the word 'rugby' could refer to either sport but usually means 'rugby league'. The nickname "rugger", which developed in England's elite schools, almost always refers to rugby union.
November 6, 201014 yr As a Northerner, you'd think I'm firmly Rugby League, but no. Anyway, the only Rugby Team round here is League (Newcastle) and practically no-one talks or cares about it. I'm Rugby Union, but I don't follow it much, mainly some Heineken Cup matches, World Cup matches and Six Nations matches.

January 26, 201114 yr I'm interested as an Aussie to know? From an outside perspective it seems that Union is more popular Union by default. It is more popular down south, and it definitely gets more media coverage as a result. Also Union has the Rugby World Cup/Six Nations on BBC1/ITV where RL doesn't get that much exposure, but it's f***ing huge in the north in 'rugby' towns so to speak.
