Thousands of cheap seats: U2 fails to sell out

Glenda Kwek

December 14, 2010

They may be one of the biggest rock bands in the world, but Sydney has served up a shock to U2 - their second show, tonight, has not sold out. :o

More than 2200 $40 tickets - the cheapest for the Irish band's 360 tour - are unsold for tonight's concert at ANZ Stadium. Limited tickets are also available for more expensive seats, promoter Michael Coppel said.

He said that may be because the unprecedented number of concerts this summer has saturated the Sydney entertainment market.

Mr Coppel, who is bringing other popular musicians such as Linkin Park, Katy Perry and Rihanna to Australia, said he has "never seen the Australian market this busy".

"Seven national tours that have gone on sale in the last five days," he said, naming Justin Bieber, Santana, Lionel Richie and James Blunt.

"I think it reflects the fact that when they [u2] toured last time, when their tickets went on sale, there were very few other concerts on sale.

"When they toured this time, they were the last big show of the summer to go on sale, and there was substantial sales already to Bon Jovi, and the Eagles, and Leonard Cohen and Muse and a range of other shows.

"Obviously everybody's business is slightly affected because we only have a limited amount of people."

Mr Coppel said one of the reasons that rival promoters had scheduled their concerts all around the same time was that each of them was busy working on their own projects and weren't aware of what their competitors were doing until they reached the promotional stage.

"Every promoter, if they are honest, would say 'I didn't realise it was going to be this busy. Suddenly there are 22 on the market.'"

The cluttered calendar was expected to free up by next winter, as it usually does, and as promoters reassess the number of acts they are bringing in to Australia, he said.

"Hopefully it will be a little less frantic in the summer next year."

About 130,000 tickets were on sale for U2's two concerts.

O Dear !!! they would sell out here ....people do not know what they are missing :(

To be fair Tess. If you could only afford to attend 2 concerts this year and had the choice of Justin Bieber, James Blunt or U2 it would be an understandably difficult decision to make. I can see why people were perplexed.

U2 might perform in Romania this year

Irish band U2 might perform in September on the new national stadium Lia Manoliu in Bucharest if talks with the promoter of the band will finalize, officials at the Bucharest City Hall declared for the Romanian news agency Mediafax.

In September there will be a concert that will gather about 60,000 people to mark the inauguration of the new national stadium. There are talks with a promoter of U2 band. If these will fail, there will most certainly be a famous band present on state.

So many shows being added all the time

I wonder how many in total there will be for this tour

Yup and still no mention of Dublin or anywhere else in the UK :(

They will finish in Dublin :cheer:

U2's Upcoming South Africa Concert Marred by Copper Thieves

February 04, 2011 – Touring | Global | Rock & Pop

By Associated Press

Officials blame thieves for power problems at South Africa's main World Cup stadium, but the stadium manager promised Friday the lights will be on in time for a U2 concert.

The theft of power cables in the area around Johannesburg's FNB Stadium led to fluctuations in supplies that can damage generators and other equipment, stadium manager Jacques Grobbelaar said Friday. City Power spokesman Sol Masolo said his utility had asked police to investigate a case of cable theft in the matter.

Cable theft, widespread in South Africa and elsewhere, is likely to increase with recent global copper price rises.

A national soccer league game scheduled for Saturday at the stadium had to be canceled to allow for repairs before the U2 concert, Grobbelaar said.

Grobbelaar said U2 is expected to draw 98,000 fans, making the Feb. 13 concert a bigger event than the World Cup final, when the stadium hosted about 94,000 people.

5, 900 staff for U2's two concerts in SA

Feb 3, 2011 10:03 PM | By ANDILE NDLOVU

It may seem ridiculous for a four-man rock band to need 5, 900 staff for a two-date tour, but rock royalty U2's juggernaut is not a usual series of concerts.

On February 13, at the FNB stadium, in Soweto, Bono and his band will play in front of "probably their biggest crowd they've played to" - 110, 000 people.

Concert promoter Penny Stein said that only 2, 000 tickets were still available for the Johannesburg concert, which forms part of the Irish band's 360-degree World Tour.

The 70, 000 tickets for the February 18 concert at Cape Town stadium were sold out within a week in October.

The idea of a 360-degree stadium stage came from a model built with dinner forks during the band's 2006 Vertigo Tour.

The shows will have the largest concert stage structure ever assembled. It revolves, allowing the audience to surround it and get a good view from all sides.

Stein said 200 containers carrying both international and locally-hired equipment had already arrived.

"This is a massive set and rig. It is a total of 300 international and local staff, 2, 600 security guards, 1, 000 bar staff and 2, 000 other support staff for four people on stage," she said.

The band will arrive next week "at various times" because they will take different flights.

Asked whether front-man Bono, a philanthropist of note, will have time for humanitarian work between concerts, Stein said: "We don't know their plans, but we are sure they will be doing some interesting stuff."

No more concerts until March 25th. Then it's off to Chile. :w00t:
