about 5 or 6 plays, it is really starting to grow on me like I thought it would B)

stuff like Strangers, Bigger Than Us, Holy Ghost, The Power & The Glory and Bad Love are very good tracks, it's not the previous album but then again who wants an album that sounds the same as the first one

incidentally it's album of the week at Amazon on mp3 format, got it for £3.99 as it's that price until Sunday night :)

Huh?!

I haven't played the album yet and it may well be a pile of cack as the single seems to suggest but that review is exactly why I hate Pitchfork. Incredibly full of self importance and their own pretentiousness. They are the new NME. Vile

"I will say that lead singer Harry McVeigh might be just someone incapable of feeling shame rather than someone who has no idea what his own lyrics even mean."

HA.

I love that review. I know they are pretentious but they make such an art of it it's entertaining.

I had myself thinking that, the lyrics are sooooo all over the place but within the song it actually works. Very anthemic album, and I think it's pretty amazing which could NOT be said for their debut at all.

I'll take that 2.4 tyvm and shove it up yer arse Pitchfork xoxo

Boring album. And lyrics aren't that great. At least the previous album had catchy songs. Really expected more :/

Bigger Than Us and Strangers are great songs though.

innit. if anything they are a bit worse than NME. don't start me on how bad the review is for 'The Fragile' by NIN, my bias towards NIN aside, that was just awfully written. and now they seem to bum everything released by NIN.

i havent even heard this album yet but i'm certainly not going to take into account pitchfork gave it 2.4, i liked the first single but thats all i've heard, but i can't see it matching the instantness of the first album, 'To Lose My Life' and 'Death' are very good well written songs.

for real?

pitchfork can be annoying and pretentious but their overall aesthetic/appreciation/taste/musical knowledge is so much more spot on than NME will ever be. while their negative reviews are definitely up for debate, if they really like something chances are it's probably good (or at least of merit) whereas NME likes some absolutely turd musicians. their news section also beats NME without any question (NME's current top story is 'Bruno Mars holds off Adele, P Diddy and Britney Spears in UK charts' lol). pitchfork also have spectacular guest interviews / mixes + a series of really thought provoking columns (http://pitchfork.com/features/columns/) which feature no score and i find i prefer most of them to their reviews. NME / most websites can't compare (the only ones that match up to P4K / possibly beat are cokemachineglow, FACT, and tiny mix tapes imo)

also, that white lies review is hilarious lol, i haven't heard it so i can't comment but come on lol. and if it's any indicator the album probably isn't that good, but i should actually listen to it before making any judgements.

I sure am glad I very rarely read read album reviews these days tbh... It's clear to me that the general standard of music journalism has gone right down the toilet since the days of really good music criticism from NME and Melody Maker in the 80s/90s...

There is a certain amount of lyrical naivete in the album, but to totally shoot down the band for that is pretty ridiculous, not everyone can be a Morrissey or Nick Cave...

I think White Lies have come away with a very solid sophomore effort tbh, it's got a bigger sound, is a bit more confident than the debut (which was a damn good album too), they seem to know where it is they want to go as a band... Am a bit unsure about the opener "Is Love", "Strangers" picks things up, but the album really soars from "Bigger Than Us" onwards, taking in equally awesome tracks like "Streetlights", "Holy Ghost" and "Turn The Bells" and "Bad Love"... It's a hell of a lot better than the incredibly disappointing and dull effort from Interpol last year...

Good stuff... 8/10 from me....

This is actually good. Not 'great' but solid good. First three tracks with The Power & The Glory and Bad Love are definite highlights. Still prefer their debut i think.
I've listened to this twice and now feel that I have tortured myself enough to move on. It's trying to be all anthemic but somehow comes off as being completely and utterly dull. Ho hum.

It's because they are so CONTRIVED.

It'd make a big difference if White Lies ENDED UP being stadium rock as opposed to that being THEM before a song for record two had even been written.

That arguement doesn't even make any sense........

What exactly is your objection? That they're actually playing stadiums (in support of bands like Muse) and large European festivals....?

I bought the box set - a selection of singles in colour coded sleeves on white vinyl, signed artwork and a code to download the MP3s.... very lovely. As for the actual album - it's too similar to the first album, no progression. It might grow but.... hmm....

And let's be honest here - anything Pitchfork hates MUST be fabulous. Completely irrelevant site, as shown by their laughable end-of-year charts.
