After revealing that The Smiths turned down a $5 Million offer to play at last year's Coachella festival, legendary front man Morrissey went on to complain about Arctic Monkeys being almost too famous, too soon.

He said:

"For them it's happening too quickly. They haven't proven anything and they haven't had to work too hard. It's all a bit unnatural. Yes, they've sold 700,000 albums but it can't be gratifying. They haven't been driving up and down the M1 in a van for 15 years."

We know what you mean mate but maybe the lads didn't need to drive around playing gigs for 15 years because they were that good to start with, eh?

All I can say is that they're good enough but it has happened very quickly and so they will need to be very careful with things so in a way I see his point he's making but I'll go with the point at the end of the article.

Yes it has changed but in good ways and bad ways. If the Arctics were on a major label and their first album didn't sell then they would have been dropped as a negative point. Bands break quicker now but the way the Arctics built their fanbase is unique to how anyone else has done so far so lets just hope that we're all loyal fans as it's all happening very fast.

I'm with Moz on this one to be honest, he's a very wise man and has probably forgotten more about what it means to be in a slogging-your-guts-out touring band than the Arctic Monkeys will ever know, The Smiths had to claw their way to public consciousness - the patronage of the late-great John Peel (the unofficial Patron Saint of Up-and-Coming young bands) certainly helped, but it was a bitter struggle; and it sure as hell was NOT because they didnt have the material - I'm frankly still waiting for AM to come up with anything even half as good as The Smiths.... Moz, Marr and Co made it through bloody hard graft.

The facts are Morrissey has outlasted countless acts who the music press have canonised as "The Next Big Thing", his new material is amongst the strongest of his 25 year career; he will outlast AM, he will continue to make compelling, vital music, and he will wag his finger at you all and say "told you so....."

I don't think its fair to judge the AM just yet. They did slog there huts out way before loads of people started noticeing them. They were giging nearly everyday playing at really small venues and it was only at the Leeds/Reading festival that they started to get noticed.

I think what I was taking issue with was the side-swipe the original quote took at The Smiths - bloody stupid thing to do, Morrissey and The Smiths have bloody earned their legend status...

Bottom line - I dont think that AM are really that bad, I just dont buy that they're the greatest thing since sliced bread, I've listened to the album all the way through, it gets a 5/10 from me I'm afraid..... :(

When I first heard The Smiths, I was utterly blown away....

Oh! He's apologised :o

Exclusive - Morrissey apologises to Arctic Monkeys

"Their success is 'just like The Smiths' says the singer"

Morrissey has apologised to the Arctic Monkeys if he recent comments about them caused offence.

The singer was quoted criticising the band's rapid success while at the South By South West festival last week (March 15), suggesting it was too soon and "a bit unnatural".

However Morrissey has issued a further statement to NME.COM, explaining he was not criticising the Sheffield newcomers.

"I'm sorry that the comments I made at SouthBySouthWest about the Arctic Monkeys were printed so harshly in The Times and the NME," states Morrissey.

"I actually quite like the Arctic Monkeys and whatever I said was said with tender, avuncular concern. I hope to God I didn't upset their grannies," he added.

"In any case, I was wrong about their success being too sudden and without any dues paid, because that's exactly how it happened for The Smiths. So, I really should shut it."
