gawd... this really pi$$es me off...

note how ALL people with any religious conviction impose it upon their little kids. they brainwash them into accepting this identity as the parents are convinced that they are right (having been indoctrinated at a young age too)

is it any wonder that fanatisism and hatred flourish in such a climate?

but lets consider this.... if all these people (or a huge majority) have been brought up within a particular religious environment since birth... what chance have any of these people ever had to reasonably consider any other faith?... bugger all! doesnt this make the whole concept of anyone being right? its a tradition, not a real live faith...

id have the upmost respect for anyone who crosses the divide, and becomes a member of an 'alien' religion.

It's totally brainwashing mate, absolutely 100% correct. I've always said that the best way to prevent this is to totally ban all Religious denomination schools - whether it's Catholic, C of E, Muslim, Jewish or even Rastafarian. Thanks to Tony Blair's barmy ideas on education, we could have an academy sponsored by some businessman who's religious prejudices totally colours the curriculum... I am talking of course of the ridiculous man who wants Old Testament-style "Creationism" taught in schools as opposed to Evolution, dinosaurs, anthropology, etc.... You know, actual Empirical Science... as opposed to groundless Superstition... <_<

RE, from what I've been told is okay, because the subject covers different ground and looks at ethical issues as opposed to favouring one particular ideology over another....

Parents bring their kids up how they see fit though, whether that way is a good way or not. I guess if they are religious and truly believe in it they'll want to raise their kids that way too.

I suppose the key thing is that parents will see their children as an extension of them- i.e if their child does well for themself then they have done a good job, if the child does badly then they've made a mistake somewhere, and there is some truth in that. But children are whole different people. They are individuals themselves with their own personalities and their own desires. So sometimes the child can go on to do well despite a bad upbringing and sometimes it isn't the parents fault if the child goes off the rails, although I guess the latter two are more true once their child has grown up, is an adult and therefore out of their care.

The point being I think is that that person will eventually make up their own mind. Many people raised in a religious environment become atheists and many change religion, but if they chose to stay in that religion I guess its up to them. The point is, in countries not governed entirely by religious law at least, anyone raised with any religion will eventually make up their own mind about whether they want to still be a part of it or not.

but their minds have been loaded from day 1, this is my gripe. and it is perpetuating the divisions in humanity that are causing so much pain and sorrow.

athiests are 99% 'fallen' christians, as other denominations are much stricter and make it hard to reject their religion.

i know of no one who has changed religion. except cat stevens!...lol. but when push comes to shove, people dont reject the religion they are born into, thus perpetuating this barmy, destructive, world system that harms people.

I don't believe in god.

Even if I did, I wouldn't bring my children up to aswell.

If the child wants to be religious then they will do when they are old enough to understand all about it.

In R.E. we learnt all about this, and that in some religions the parents have to bring their children up the same way as them. So if they want to abide by the rules of that particular religion, then is it their fault if they brainwash the child?

i think its more widespread then you think... some are blatantly open about it, whilst most of us for eg are brought up as christians and are expected to accept that way. maybe thats why christianity is dying... maybe christian parents are allowing their kids more free choice.

You sound like a totally objective individual. Unfortunately, people with strong religious beliefs are nothing like you. They believe it is their DUTY to raise their children in their faith, they believe it is the only way they'll be saved from the firey depths of damnation. Hyperbolic phrases aside, if someone believes in a faith, they obviously believe it is the purpose of life and the means to salvation. Of COURSE they'll not give their children a "choice" in the matter. They love their children and want the best for them which they believe is some religious upbringing.

I'm not defending it, just trying to prove that anyone agreeing with your argument has obviously moved past the brainwash mentality. And unfortunately in this world, VERY few ever do.
