Posted November 21, 201014 yr JLS – Love You More enters at #1 This week’s chart topper has been very much a foregone conclusion, and unlike last week, the said song did indeed top the charts with ease. We are talking about JLS of course who famously came second in the X-Factor. The boys claim their 4th UK number one single this week with Love You More, which is now more than any other act to come from X-Factor. As well as being performed on X-Factor, Love You More is this year’s official Children In Need single with proceeds going to the Pudsey appeal to help disadvantaged children in the UK. Last year’s CIN single was Peter Key’s Animated video featuring a montage of hits including Can You Feel It, Don’t Stop and Hey Jude (more to follow on that). Ellie Goulding – Your Song climbs to #3 BBC Sound of 2010 poll winner Ellie Goulding gets her highest charting hit yet as Your Song leaps up from its #39 entry point last week to #3 this week. Ellie first charted with her first full release Starry Eyed, then hit #1 with debut album Lights, followed by Guns & Horses and The Writer. Ellie was chosen to sing the feature song on the latest John Lewis advert, a cover of Elton John’s signature #7 hit Your Song from 1970. This cover has now outpeaked the famous original, following a performance on Children In Need and heavy rotation of the TV advertisement. Far East Movement – Like A G6 enters at #6 Electro hip cop quartet Far East Movement make their debut this week as the hotly anticipated Like A G6 enters at #6, so it’s like a #6 then! Each of their members – Kev Nish, Prohgress, J-Splif and DJ Virman represent different generations of Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and Filipino ancestry within the Asian American community respectively. Like A G6 has already been a huge worldwide hit, making #1 in USA and New Zealand this year. The track also features US hip hop duo The Cataracs and a female singer known as Dev. Westlife – Safe enters at #10 Another of the nation’s biggest boy bands return to the charts this week, Westlife enter at #10 this week with Safe. Since their 1999 debut Swear It Again, Westlife have been nothing short of a phenomenon in terms of singles success. They made #1 with the first 7 of their single releases and had a further 7 chart toppers after that, in fact all but one of these have made the top 5 with 2008’s Us Against The World hitting #8. This new single Safe actually becomes their lowest charting yet, entering at #10 … a position that many bands would love to be able to reach. Rihanna feat Drake – What’s My Name enters at #18 Rihanna charts this week with the forthcoming second single to come from her latest album Loud, What’s My Name enters at #18. The single features US rapper Drake and joins her mega #1 hit Only Girl (In The World) to provide her with her 17th UK top 20 hit in just 5 years. Rihanna is certainly consistent in terms of success, if nothing else! Tinchy Stryder feat Chipmunk, etc. – Game Over enters at #22 Tinchy Stryder was a big star last year when he scored 2 #1s and a #2 album Catch 22. However this year has been so successful, hitting #10 with In My System but only #22 with Second Chance and his Third Strike album appears to have flopped. However he does match the peak of his last single with Game Over, not actually an official single but an album download. The track features many of today’s fellow rappers including Giggs, Professor Green, Tinie Tempah, Devlin, Example and Chipmunk. Alistair Griffin – Just Drive enters at #38 Already an established songwriter, in 2003 Alistair Griffin became well known as a contestant on the second series of Fame Academy. He then went on to score a #5 hit with Bring It On / My Lover’s Prayer, alongside Robin Gibb who first discovered him. The following year You & Me Tonight provided Alistair with a #18 hit, followed by other non-charting hits including one of the many covers of Hallelujah. Now he returns with Just Drive which was appropriately enough used for recent Formula One TV coverage. The Beatles – Hey Jude re-enters at #40 In case anyone didn’t know, this week’s big news (apart from an upcoming royal wedding) has been the long awaited addition of the entire Beatles back catalogue to iTunes. This has of course led to speculation that many of the tracks could re-enter the charts, with the possibility of a top 10 made up entirely of Beatles songs. This has in fact been far from reality, due to the tracks being made available mid week and there being so many individual songs available to choose from with dozens acknowledged as all time classics. Besides, the “fab 4” have sold a shed load of albums over the years, and most people who are interested would have bought those instead. However Hey Jude is the one track that has made it back in this week at #40, having been one of the band’s 17 UK #1s they achieved from 1963-1969. X-Factor had a Beatles night, so it is very possible for some others to make an appearance next week. Take That hit #1 with their Progress album on HUGE sales Over on the album charts there was no question who would be #1, more a question of how well would Progress by Take That sell. This is the band’s 6th studio album and 5th #1, selling over 1/2 million in its first week to become the century’s fastest selling album, almost managing to beat the all time record of 696k set by Oasis with Be Here Now in 1997. In a top 5 made up of 4 new entries, we find Rihanna’s fifth studio album Loud entering at #2. Behind her and SuBo, at #4 is Dutch opera star Andre Rieu with new album Moonlight Serenade, following up last year’s #1 album Forever Vienna. US superstar Pink has amassed 20 UK top 40 hits from 2000 to now, her Greatest Hits So Far comes in at #5 this week. Bruce Springsteen is in at #7 with an album of previously unreleased material from the Darkness On The Edge Of Town sessions, entitled The Promise. Other new entries this week include Shayne Ward’s third album Obsession, a Russell Watson compilation, McFly’s Above The Noise, Nelly’s 5.0, Norah Jones and Jools Holland. Opinionated bit! Love You More is a pretty good song compared to The Club Is Alive which I thought was dreadful, mind you I did grow to like Beat Again. However, I am happy to see this top the charts since it is for Children In Need. Take That have been unlucky once more stuck at #2 with The Flood, the Progress album is very different indeed and I do really like it after a few listens. Ellie Goulding’s lovely cover of Your Song is doing surprisingly well and I’m happy about that. More than can be said about the dirge that is Like A G6, can’t find any redeeming factor about it except that it’s not as bad as the Black Eyed Peas thing! Westlife’s new one is pretty average really, but at least it’s not another run of the mill cover. Rihanna and Drake’s What’s My Name isn’t too good really, better than that Tinchy collaboration … I wish it was Game Over for all of those artists. I really like the Alistair Griffin song Just Drive. I have always been a massive Beatles fan and am glad to see Hey Jude get back in, even if it should be 39 places higher. Edited November 21, 201014 yr by loudjamesbond
