Posted November 29, 201014 yr Mark Cavendish Tom Daley Jessica Ennis David Haye AP McCoy Graeme McDowell Graeme Swann Phil Taylor Lee Westwood Amy Williams Anything other than a McCoy victory and it is a travesty.
November 30, 201014 yr Author Tom Daley will win. If he wins this over McCoy and McDowell I will never take this award seriously again. McCoy is odds-on favourite to win.
November 30, 201014 yr I hope Jess Ennis wins she should have won it last year but was robbed by Giggs.
November 30, 201014 yr When I looked at the list I thought any one of about 7 could win. I doubted Westwood as I thought McDowell would get the Golf votes, Williams because it was too long ago and Swann because the biggest part of his year is yet to happen. So I was suprised to see that AP McCoy is odds on favourite at every bookmaker!! Odds (ladbrokes) McCoy: 4/5 McDowell: 9/2 Taylor: 7/1 Westwood: 8/1 Ennis: 14/1 Willaims: 16/1 Daley: 20/1 Swann: 25/1 Haye: 50/1 Cavendish: 50/1 Whilst Phil Taylor would be a deserved winner, he's the greatest darts player of all time and one of the most dominant forces in any sport ever, too many people don't see it as a sport so will never pick up the votes. It's nice to see he's finally been nominated though! 30 national and regional publications each nominated 10 people for the award. The 10 with the most votes were shortlisted. There was a four-way tie for 8th place so a panel of six former winners decided the three that went on the shortlist. The number of votes received was: 1. Tony McCoy 30 2. Graeme McDowell 29 3. Lee Westwood 27 4. Jessica Ennis 25 5. Graeme Swann 21 6. Mark Cavendish 18 7. David Haye 16 8= Tom Daley 14 8= Mo Farah 14 8= Phil Taylor 14 8= Amy Williams 14 12. Andy Murray 12 13. Beth Tweddle 11 14. Andrew Strauss 8 15. Gareth Bale 6 16. Rory McIlroy 4 17= Rebecca Adlington 3 17= Lewis Hamilton 3 17= Amir Khan 3 17= Paul Scholes 3 21= Ricky Burns 2 (Boxing - won super-featherweight world title) 21= Didier Drogba 2 21= Dai Greene 2 (Athletics - won European & Commonwealth gold in 400m hurdles) 21= Fran Halsall 2 (Swimming - won European & Commonwealth gold and 10 medals in total) 21= Paul Hanagan 2 (Horse Racing - champion jockey on the flat) 21= David Weir 2 (still playing for Scotland at the age of 40) 27= Charlie Adam 1 (Blackpool footballer - nominated by The Sun) 27= Maggie Alphonsi 1 (Rugby Union - part of the England team that reached the women's World Cup final) 27= Chris Ashton 1 (Rugby Union) 27= Danielle Brown 1 (Archery - first Paralympic athlete to win Commonwealth gold for England in able-bodied competition) 27= Jenson Button 1 27= Steve Davis 1 (reached World Snooker quarters at age of 52) 27= Dario Franchitti 1 (won Indycar title) 27= Katherine Grainger 1 (Rowing - won world gold) 27= Audley Harrison 1 (nominated by Zoo) 27= Mark Lewis-Francis 1 27= Lewis Moody 1 27= Eoin Morgan 1 27= Emma Pooley 1 (Cycling - won world Time Trial title)
November 30, 201014 yr Audley Harrison's 1 nod came from Zoo, says it all . I mean there's no denying he's a good boxer but what's he done this year that's of any note. Anyways, how was Didier Drogba eligible for anything if he isn't British. Hmmm...
December 19, 201014 yr Phil Taylor 2nd, love it. I don't even particularly like him, but I'm a big fan of darts so it's good to see him finish so high for the sport!

December 20, 201014 yr Definatley a wrong choice of winner. Mark Cavendish, Jess Ennis or Amy Williams should have won it - not a stupid jockey. But thank goodness for small mercies - at least a boring golfer didn't win. I think this years show was the worst for years. It was mainly about boring golf. A sport that's as exciting as watching paint dry. Great to see Frank Williams getting the honour he deserved years ago. Edited December 20, 201014 yr by euro music

A sport that's as exciting as watching paint dry. Great to see Frank Williams getting the honour he deserved years ago. Are you kidding? It's very ignorant. AP McCoy has been champion jockey for something like 15 years, and it was the first time ever he won the biggest race in the country. Being a jackey is not easy, there is immense skill and talent in being a top jockey. He risks his life potentially every time he rides a horse. Golf is exactly the same as well - i'm not a major fan but the UK have excelled in golf ths year. Got a major champion, #1 golfer in the world and we won the Ryder Cup. Apart from that as a country we have not really had a lot to shout out about. As much as Jessica Ennis is a good athlete, she is only in the heptahalon because she is mediocre at all the sports she competes in. She could never win a European or Commonwealth medal in the javelin, 800 metres etc. - that is not to say she is a bad athlete, as she is not at all, but the right person definitely won this year.
December 20, 201014 yr Author OH - one other thing...David Beckham, lifetime achievement - give me a bloody break!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
December 20, 201014 yr If Mark Lewis-Francis hadn't got that faulty block in the Commonwealth final he'd have been in the final 10, no doubt. Well, he'd have won that race for a start and we'd have another double gold medallist on our hands!
December 20, 201014 yr OH - one other thing...David Beckham, lifetime achievement - give me a bloody break!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They tend to go one of two ways with the lifetime achievement - still active (Beckham) or nearly dead (Robson). I personally don't have a problem with him gettting it.

I can think of more worthy sportsman who deserve the award compared to Beckham. Kenny Dalglish and Alex Higgins for starters.
December 20, 201014 yr OH - one other thing...David Beckham, lifetime achievement - give me a bloody break!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was gob smacked with that decision, would have been nice as final tribute to Alex Higgins I had my money on Lee Westwood for S.P.O.T.Y.
